2. Introduction to Guide
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here we are with my 4th walkthrough, this time for the SMS. I chose Virtua
Fighter for my next title, and why? Simply because I like it. This title in
particular is lesser known than many other Virtua Fighter games, however it is
an excellent early 2D fighter rivaling that of Street Fighter and the like.
This VF hit the Game Gear and the Sega Master System in 1996, and presents you
with 7 initial characters. The only modes there for you are a VS. Com mode and
a Story Mode, however the game is excellent and for any Virtua Fighter or 2D
fighting game buff, a must-have if you have the required systems =P.
This guide is only for the Sega Master System and not for the Game Gear because
I'm not familiar with it to be quite honest. Also, some information not
regarding gameplay was used from Wikipedia.org.
The story section of the guide is quite shallow, only because the battles are
as short as the descriptions.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3. General Tips
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Incase you're new to 2D fighters or fighters in general, the object of the game
is to defeat your opponent one way or another. There are three paths to victory
* K.O
Eliminate your opponent's health bar by using a combination of attacks.
* Ring Out
Knock your opponent out of the ring.
* Time Win
Have more health than your opponent when the time limit runs out.
The first thing you're going to want to do is choose your character. Being as
this game is super-simple compared to a 3d fighting game or a SNES+ 2D fighter,
you can really pick whoever you like. I'd refer to the fifth section as a
reference, however the list is quite balanced and it's not really necessary.
Follow the controls below. Carefully practice with one character, and one only
to get better with him or her. Utilize Foward Jumps if you are cornered and
back dashes and guards to dodge. Jumping can evade low attacks. Try to cancel
your opponents attacks, and follow up with combos and unique attacks.
My opinion on characters Best to Worst.
Kage-Maru
Jacky Bryant
Akira Yuki
Pai Chan
Wolf Hawkfield
Lau Chan
Sarah Bryant

5. Characters
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+
* +
+ Akira Yuki *
* +
*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*
Akira Yuki is often portrayed as the main character in Virtua Fighter, in this
one in particular he is very young looking. His fighting style is "Bajiquan".
* Origin: Japan
* Birth: September 23rd
* Blood Type: O
**********
*Strategies*
**********
Akira is your run-of-the-mill balanced fighter. He certainly isn't the best
character but can definatley deal out some wicked moves. For starters, let's
look at his jump. It goes very high, which in itself is an advantage and a
disadvantage. His "J + K" operates slowly and does decent damage, however the
height of his jump can evade mid attacks. The bad part is that usually the
jump will be to slow. His "P" and "P , P" are bad in terms of damage and are
not particularly great in speed either. The good part is that Akira can knock
his blocking opponents towards the edge with these. This is where Akira's best
move comes in handy, his standard "K". It is quick, high knockback, and very
powerful. It hits high so try to use it during move switch-ups or even better,
towards the end of the ring. If you hit a defenseless opponent towards the end
of the stage, it's almost a garunteed ring-out. His crouch attack are pretty
good, however nothing entirely notable. His "FD + P" his another
move that provides a swift, somewhat unpredictable powerful elbow to the
abdomen.
+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+
* +
+ Jacky Bryant *
* +
*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*
Jacky has appeared consistently throughout Virtua Fighter utilizing his Jeet
Kune Do fighting style. Jacky sports his usualy spiky blonde hair.
* Origin: U.S.A.
* Birth: August 28th
* Blood Type: A
* Stage: Steak House
**********
*Strategies*
**********
Jacky proves to be one of the best characters in the game with his immense
variety in moves, power, and speed. Consider his "K , K" as a move to use
often considering it's immense power and juggling possibilites. Aside from
that it is quite possibly the best for ringing-out. Jacky's "C + K" is an
awful move that is basically a toe kick with minimal damage. It's good for
stopping and opponent's high combo, however his "C + P" is way better. It
it faster and can be use more than once for an aggresive opponent.
His "P , P , P" is an extrordinary attack if it hits, and can deal some
nice damage. His "P , K" his pretty good, offering a mid-to-high switch.
His jumping capabilites are similar to Akira.
+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+
* +
+ Kage-Maru *
* +
*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*
Kage is a ninja fighter using the fighting style "Hagakure-ryu Ju-Jutsu".
He is often considering the main character of Virtua Fighter along with
Akira. He appears strikingly similar to his appearances in other Viruta
Fighters.
* Origin: Japan
* Birth: June 6th
* Blood Type: B
* Stage: Tokyo City
**********
*Strategies*
**********
Kage is simply amazing. I'll begin by talking about his best move, his
"C + K". This move is incredible. The move gives you a strong, swift
attack that attacks from a large distance. It also lets you MOVE
BACKWARDS to dodge a future attack from the opponent. His other crouch
move is rather generic. His "K" is strong and powerful and his
"P , P , P" is rather fast and moderately powerful. He is very limited
in combos, but his "C + K" and "BF" can get you out of situations. His
His "P , P , P" his good for starting a string, and following up with
a "FD + P" his always a good way to knock your opponent of balance.
+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+
* +
+ Sarah Bryant *
* +
*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*
Sarah is the sister to Jacky Bryant, as well as a college student.
She has a similiar appearance to her other looks from Virtua Fighter.
Her fighting style consists of Karate and Taekwondo.
* Origin: U.S.A.
* Birth: July 4th
* Blood Type: AB
* Stage: Castle
**********
*Strategies*
**********
Sarah is less than decent in this game. In my opinion one of the worse
characters in the game. For starters her "J + K" seems to be very laggy.
Her "K" CANNOT be combo-ed with any other punch or kick. Her "C + K" also
leaves her very vulnerable, and is limited in damage. I suppose her "P, P
, P , P" is a little impressive, as it gives her an opportunity to knock
her opponent towards the edge, and gives a nice power advantage. Every
thing else is run-of-the-mill aside from her slightly powerful elbow.
+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+
* +
+ Pai Chan *
* +
*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*
Pai is the incredibly young chinese fighter whom is also a movie actress.
Her fighting style is Mizongyi. Her appearance is similiar to other VF
Games.
* Origin: Hong Kong
* Birth: May 17th
* Blood Type: O
* Stage: Chinese Restaurant
**********
*Strategies*
**********
For the right person, Pai can potentially be the best character. She is
awesomely swift. She is the Queen of Stringing. Her "P , P , P" does a
very, very fast job of shaving off HP, and is quite unperdictable. She
is very versatile in mixing her punches and kicks, and both are fast and
deal moderate damage at best. Her crouch and jump capabillities as far
as attacks go, are average. She is not very good at getting ring outs,
as most of your attacks will probably kick ass instead of run into blocks.
As far as I know, she has limited "cons" as opposed to "pros", but that
doesn't mean she is perfect. Someone like Kage or Jacky can easily over-
power her and leave her in the dust.
+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+
* +
+ Wolf Hawkfield *
* +
*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*
Wolf is a canadian, top of the world class wrestler. His eyes look
quite different in this game than usual, however he still has stupid
hair.
* Origin: Canada
* Birth: February 8th
* Blood Type: O
* Stage: Wrestling Ring
**********
*Strategies*
**********
Wolf is a huge powerhouse. He shaves off damage better than anyone else.
But he isn't all that. He is very slow. In fact, he delivers moves slower
than any other character. He does, however have some good qualities. His
"C + K" is an awesome attack, dealing nice damage and range. His "C + P"
is also good because it is quick and weak, which adds a nice balance to
Wolf considering every other move he does is slow. The "J + K" on the
other hand better stand for "Just Kidding" (No drum roll?) because it
is basically useless in his hands. Stick with his Pai-cloned combo for
a strong and predictable combo. Mix in his kick if necessary, but to
be honest it's better of using on an opponent right after their block,
considering it's very slow and will be more predictable if used any
other time. The reason this particular move is very important is
because it deals about a 7th of the opponents bar.
+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+
* +
+ Lau Chan *
* +
*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*
Lau is the father of Pai as well as a chinese chief and master of the
fighting style, Koen-Ken. He looks drastically younger than his most
recent appearance.
* Origin: Hong Kong
* Birth: October 2nd
* Blood Type: B
* Stage: Office
**********
*Strategies*
**********
Lau Chan is the epitome of basic. He has moderate damage. He has moderate
speed. However his range is what hurts him. Lau's "C + K" delivers less
than decent damage and has quite possible the lowest range kick, aside
from possibly Akira. His "C + P" fits in with his boring moveset. His
"P , P , P" is kind of powerful, but doesn't really keep opponents on
their toes. His "K" is comboable with "P" but it's nothing special. It
does help knock opponents out, however. I would probably reccomend him
last as a character, because he really has nothing special going on for
him.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2. Story Mode
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+
* +
+ Act I *
* +
*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*
Act I pits you up against a one-on-one match against Pai. You will be forced to
use Akira. Simply refer to the tips above to see his Pros and Cons and win. For
a quick reference, utilize his powerful Knock-Out capabilites by forcing Pai to
the edge, then a high kick should do her in. If not, mix up your strong Punches
and Kicks. Pai is fast, but it doesn't mean she is unbeatable.
+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+
* +
+ Act II *
* +
*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*
Read the words that come up and prepare for battle. You can use Pai if you
like, or stick with Akira. I reccomend Akira. The battle is like before, so
keep it simple and combo him out. Keep in mind that Mr. Bryant is quite strong
and aggresive. Remember that you can Foward Jump to jump over his head and
get away from the edge if necessary.
+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+
* +
+ Act III *
* +
*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*
Kage-Maru is next. After your cutscene, you'll have Jacky unlocked, and he is
quite good. By now you have 3/7 chance of having your favorite character avail.
Stick with Akira for his power and aggresiveness if you'd like, but I think
Jacky does a better job. Pai is still an option for her speed. Kage will use
plenty of his moves, but stick with knocking him out if you continue with Jacky
or Akira, and use combos for K.O if you use Pai.
+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+
* +
+ Act IV *
* +
*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*
Sadly, you will not unlock Kage =(. Whatever. Your fighting Wolf. He is VERY
slow. Kick his ass with Pai, considering she is quick. Use her powerful kicks
and force her to be aggressive considering you are fighting a slow opponent.
Make sure to look above for some strategies for her. Her basic Punch combo
is spectacular for knock-outs.
+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+
* +
+ Act V *
* +
*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*
It appears we're fighting Kage again. No matter, we've defeated him once before
and it can be done again. Wolf isn't exactly a good match up against him, so he
wont be getting any use this round. Use Jacky or Pai for him and remember the
basics. Use backdashing to get away from his annoying, long strings, and
occasional throws. If he gets to the back of the level he will almost always do
a backflip and kill him self.
+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+
* +
+ Act VI *
* +
*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*
Sarah is quite possibly the worst character. This, however does not make her the
easiest to defeat. Pick Kage, unless you have a passion for another character.
Pretty much use Kage for the rest of the game. He can provide ring-outs if used
correctly in ~8 seconds and can also shave off MAJOR damage with kicks and
combos.
+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+
* +
+ Act VII *
* +
*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*
Yay! Sarah and Jacky reunited. Whatever. Continue on with the story and wreck
Lau. By now you should know what to do. Simply pick Kage and do the same strat
as last time. The difficulty has seemingly jumped, but you have 6 oppurtunities
so make use of them.
+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+
* +
+ Act VIII *
* +
*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*
Dural. Damn. Well, she is tough, but beatable. You have every character to
your disposal, so make good use of them. I suggest Pai for this one. She is
very quick and versatile with her combos and the point of this battle is
NOT to get Dural to the edge. You see, Dural uses the strongest moves as
each one of her attack slots, with optimum delivery. 80% of the time she
is by the edge, she will toss you out with Wolf's stupid spinning throw.
Your gonna need to do "BD , K" as your main asset with Pai. Good Luck!
