     I.    Introduction and Contest Types
    ********************************************************************************
    
    Welcome to my FAQ!  I decided to make this FAQ because I am rather obsessed
    about Contests, and am rather dismayed to have found no complete listing of all
    Contest moves.  So, I compiled one, and it's grown to a full-fledged FAQ.
    
    Contests!  Show your POKeMON's beauty, toughness, and intellgence with its
    showy moves and cute charm!  What, exactly, are Contests about?  And what are
    they, anyway?  Well, that's what I'm here to answer.
    
    The first Contest Hall you encounter while playing POKeMON RUBY / SAPPHIRE is
    the one in SLATEPORT CITY.  Unfortunately, at this time, you do not have the
    very important Key Item, "CONTEST PASS", and so can not participate.  While you
    are there, however, you can pick up a POKeBLOCKS CASE from the little girl to
    the left, since you'll need that to raise your POKeMON's Condition and make it
    more beautiful, more smart, more tough, and so on.
    
    Anyway, once you've finally reached VERDANTURF you can participate in your
    very first Contest!  Since VERDANTURF is home to the NORMAL RANK Contest Hall,
    you can enter any POKeMON.  After a POKeMON has won NORMAL RANK, it can then
    move on to SUPER RANK, and then to HYPER RANK, and finally to the prestigious
    MASTER RANK.  Before I go any further, I will list all four of the Contest Halls
    and which towns they are in.

    In addition to these different ranks, which are essentially the same but with
    bigger and better POKeMON competing as the ranks go up, there are five different
    Contest Types.  These types are COOL, BEAUTY, CUTE, SMART, and TOUGH.  All moves
    that are used in Contests fall under one of these five categories and you can
    check just what category your POKeMON's moves fall under simply by going into
    your POKeMON's status screen and going over past the battle move descriptions to
    the Contest move descriptions.  Here, instead of a POKeMON type such as "FLYING"
    or "GRASS", you will find the move types fall into the COOL, BEAUTY, CUTE, SMART
    and TOUGH categories.  Because you can check this at any time, including when
    learning new moves, you can design your POKeMON to be good at both battling and
    Contests!
    
    It is good to know what Contest-type moves a POKeMON has because a POKeMON can
    only eat a certain amount of POKeBLOCKS, which raise a POKeMON's Condition.  The
    Condition of a POKeMON is very important to the "Preliminary Judging" done first
    in a Contest, since the number of stars your POKeMON earns on the Results screen
    is directly related to how many votes it gets during the Preliminary Judging,
    which is dependant on your POKeMON's Condition.  Thus, you want to feed your
    POKeMON POKeBLOCKS that fit with the same type of Contest as its moves.
    
    Since I've already mentioned "Preliminary Judging", I am going to describe the
    steps a Contest takes.
                                   Contest Steps:
    
    Step 1: You register for the Contest.  To do this, simply talk to the nice lady
     at the counter.  Remember, however, that in order to compete in SUPER RANK, a
     POKeMON must have won first place in the NORMAL RANK Contest of the same type.
     This also applies to HYPER RANK (as you need the SUPER RANK Ribbon) and also to
     MASTER RANK (requiring the HYPER RANK Ribbon).
    
    Step 2: Preliminary Judging.  Each POKeMON's Condition is evaluated and then the
     audience votes.  You can somewhat tell how well your POKeMON does in this stage
     of judging by the number of hearts that appear over the audience's heads when
     it is displayed to them.  Your score from the Preliminary Judging is shown as
     stars on the Results Screen, so if you find you are much lower than your
     opponents with stars, but still doing alright with hearts, you simply have to
     raise your POKeMON's Condition and you may be able to win easier.
    
    Step 3: Secondary Judging.  Here, POKeMON makes appeals (moves) in an attempt to
     win the favor of the JUDGE.  There are five rounds of appeals, and each POKeMON
     usually gets to use one appeal each turn.  The turn order is shown on the right
     along with each POKeMON's current score for that turn on the right.  Turn order
     is normally determined by how well a POKeMON is doing.  The POKeMON with the
     most appeal points (hearts) so far goes first, and the POKeMON with the least
     appeal points goes last.  Different things can happen during this time, so we
     will be going over it in more detail a bit later.
    
    Step 4: Results.  Now you can tell how well you did.  The stars represent your
     POKeMON's Condition, which comes from the Preliminary Judging.  The hearts are
     your appeal points, obtained during the Secondary Judging.  The stars and the
     hearts fill up green meters on the left, and the POKeMON whose meter fills up
     all the way is declared the winner.  Note that you are able to actually have
     negative appeal points (hearts) at this time!  If your hearts are displayed in
     black rather than pink, you will actually lose points rather than gain them!
    
    The most important step, because it is the longest and the most influential
    step (and the easiest to change), is Step 3.  Appeal time is where your POKeMON
    gets to use all of its unique Contest moves against the other competing POKeMON
    in an attempt to come out on top.  I'm going to go over the basic rules of
    Appeal time now.
    
    
    ********************************************************************************
     II.   The Mechanics of Contests
    ********************************************************************************
    
    This section is really more simple than I'd like it to be, but there's not a
    lot to it.  So, that's alright.  First, some definitions:
    
    
    Definition: Appeal points - the number of total points (hearts) earned by a
    POKeMON.  These points are earned by using moves, and are lost when others jam
    your POKeMON.  These are represented by red hearts that appear in your POKeMON's
    status box on the right.
    
    Definition: Jam - a loss of points (hearts) due to another POKeMON's move.
    Jam moves can cause your POKeMON's current score for the round go negative.  If
    this is the case, the number of points your POKeMON will lose are shown by the
    number of black hearts in the status box.
    
    
    Now, I'll get into the 'status box'.  This box is the section on the right,
    where all of your POKeMON's status is shown each round.  There is a small square
    there, where most symbols go, but there can also be stars next to it, and a
    small flashing yellow spot beneath it.  In addition to these things, the status
    box also shows you your current round's appeal points.
    
    
    "Settled down just a bit", shown by a circle in your POKeMON's status box,
    prevents your POKeMON from being jammed once during the current round.  Once
    your POKeMON stops one such jam from happening, it is then open to any other
    jams that occur during that turn.
    
    "Became oblivious to others", shown by a circle in your POKeMON's status box,
    prevents your POKeMON from being jammed at all during the current round.  Unlike
    the previous circle-status, this one lasts jam after jam, but only for the round
    you have the circle-status.
    
    Whenever there is a small 'swirly' in your POKeMON's status box, another
    POKeMON is trying to jam it.  As a result of this 'swirly', your POKeMON can
    have nothing happen (except perhaps to lose the 'settled down' status) if you
    have a circle-status, or become nervous, or lose good condition, or lose the
    Judge's attention and fall out of Combo Standby.  The exact results of the
    'swirly' depend on the move that caused it and your POKeMON's current status.
    
    The stars next to your POKeMON's status box are known as marks of 'good
    condition'.  If a POKeMON has a good condition as a result of one of its earlier
    moves, that POKeMON earns one additional appeal point for each star that POKeMON
    has, for each move.
    
    
    In addition to learning information from your POKeMON's status box, some
    information can be seen by watching the JUDGE's reaction to your POKeMON's
    moves.  Here are some of them:
    
    
    JUDGE: "?" When the JUDGE has a question mark over his head, you will then see
    small boxes under each POKeMON that say 'NEXT TURN: ?'.  Basically, this means
    the turn order has been scrambled.
    
    JUDGE: "1" When the JUDGE has a number one over his head, you will then see
    a small box under a POKeMON that says 'NEXT TURN: 1'.  Basically, this means
    the turn order has been changed.  The POKeMON that has 'NEXT TURN: 1' will go
    first next turn.
    
    JUDGE: "4" When the JUDGE has a number four over his head, you will then see
    a small box under a POKeMON that says 'NEXT TURN: 4'.  Basically, this means
    the turn order has been changed.  The POKeMON that has 'NEXT TURN: 4' will go
    last next turn.
    
    JUDGE: 'swirly' When the JUDGE gets a gray swirly over his head, it means a
    move was repeated from last turn.  You lose two appeal points for your first
    time repeating a move, three appeal points for the second time, four for the
    third, and five for the fourth.  Basically, do not repeat moves if you can avoid
    it.  The move you used last turn is shown in gray, so you know what move to
    avoid using in case you forgot.
    
    JUDGE: "!" When the JUDGE gets an exclaimation mark over his head, your POKeMON
    will be put into 'Combo Standby' which is shown by a flashing spot beneat your
    POKeMON's status box.  Next turn, if you have a move that can combo with your
    previous move, it will be shown in read.  If you're still in Combo Standby, you
    will see the next JUDGE reaction.
    
    JUDGE: "!!" When the JUDGE gets two exclaimation marks over his head, you have
    completed a combo.  By doing so, you earn addition appeal points based on the
    base appeal point worth of the second move in the combo.  For example, if the
    combo move was shown to be worth one appeal point, you would earn two appeal
    points total (one, plus one more for the combo).  If the move was shown to be
    worth eight points, you would earn sixteen points (eight, plus eight for the
    combo).  Note that moves like Spite, which can potentially earn you six points,
    still only give you one additional point when in a combo, since the 'base' of
    Spite and similar moves is still only one appeal point.
    
    JUDGE: "*" When the JUDGE gets a star over his head, your POKeMON's status has
    raised and you will get a star next to your POKeMON's status box.
    
    
    Finally, here are some important things conerning the Applause Meter and turn
    order.  It is easy to win if you know how to manipulate when you go and who gets
    the Applause Meter bonus!
    
    
    If a POKeMON uses a move that is the same Contest-type as the Contest, the
    Applause Meter (shown on the left sometimes as five empty or full ovals) raises
    by one and that POKeMON earns an additional appeal point for that appeal.
    
    If a POKeMON uses a move and the Applause Meter fills up as a result of this
    (that is, it raises from four to five), that POKeMON earns six appeal points in
    addition instead of just one.
    
    Turn order, unless otherwise changed or modified, is determined by how well
    each POKeMON is doing.  On the first turn, the turn order is determined by the
    Preliminary Judging results.  That is, the POKeMON with the highest Condition
    goes first, and the one with the lowest Condition goes last.
    
    Any appeal points a POKeMON has - positive or negative - is added to its score
    at the end of each round.  A POKeMON's score is represented by a small sliding
    heart beneath its name on the right; however, the score can be less than an
    empty slider, and can be more than a full slider, so if the slider is all the
    way to the left or right it could be misleading.
    
    If a POKeMON has an 'X' in its status box, as a result of moves like Explosion
    or Hyper Beam, that POKeMON misses that turn of appeals, but also can not be
    jammed on that turn.
    
    
    To end this section, I will finish off by telling you how many appeal points
    equals one heart in the Results section.  For every four appeal points, you get
    a single heart.  Looking at the small table below, you should figure out the
    pattern.  Note that it is possible to have negative appeal points.

    You require at least five hearts to get a painting made, and the maximum
    number of hearts that can show up is ten, if you get 37 or more Appeal Points
    total.

     III. Contest Moves
    ********************************************************************************
    
      In this section, moves will be listed as follows:

    This would be a move whose name is 'MOVE', of the Contest type 'TYPE', which
    gives you four appeal points and jams the other POKeMON for two points, and
    raises the user's condition.  Any other information can be learned by reading
    the place where the move description is.  Many moves have the same desciption
    and basically do the same thing, so the description is called the 'move type',
    as opposed to 'contest type' which varies within each 'move type'.

     IV.   Information on POKeBLOCKS and Condition
    ********************************************************************************
    
    When a POKeMON eats a POKeBLOCK, its Condition will raise.  There are five
    flavours of POKeBLOCKs, and each flavour raises a different Contest Condition.
    For example, Spicy POKeBLOCKs raise COOL.
    
    In addition, certain personalities like some flavours of POKeBLOCKs, and
    others dislike them.  As you may already know, personalities raise one of your
    POKeMON's stats, and lowers another.  Well, each stat is associated with a type
    of Contest.  So, a POKeMON that has a personality which raises Attack will also
    like Spicy POKeBLOCKs, since Spicy is associated with COOL, and so is Attack.

    When dealing with POKeBLOCKs that have more than one flavour, it is important
    to realize that the Level rating is only the value that the highest stat on that
    POKeBLOCK has.  For example, Pamtre Berries can make INDIGO POKeBLOCKs that are
    both DRY and SPICY.  However, the level value only applies to DRY in this case,
    since that is the highest flavour.  While Pamtre Berries do make POKeBLOCKs that
    raise COOL, it should be noted that they do not raise COOL as much as they raise
    BEAUTY, simply because their SPICY value is much less, despite the high level.
    
    Since it is impossible to tell the level of any particular flavour (except when
    a POKeBLOCK has only one flavour, or you know which flavour is the highest), it
    is extremely difficult to calculate a POKeMON's Condition exactly.
    
    
    There are also five neutral personalities that have no preferences for any
    particular kind of POKeBLOCK: Hardy, Docile, Serious, Bashful, and Quirky.
    
    You can take your POKeMON to the man in MOSSDEEP.  He will tell you what
    colour of POKeBLOCK your POKeMON likes.  These colours correspond to the
    flavour, really, since INDIGO or other mixed-colour POKeBLOCKs can be liked or
    disliked, depending on the flavours they contain.
    
    When two flavours that your POKeMON likes and dislikes are combined, the
    resulting POKeBLOCK will have its usual effect on your POKeMON; rather than
    liking or disliking the POKeBLOCK, it will be completely normal.
    
    Normally, a POKeMON gains points in each Condition the POKeBLOCK has a
    flavour of equal to that POKeBLOCK's Level (taking into considertion the fact
    that only the highest-valued flavour is shown as the Level, of course).  However,
    if your POKeMON likes the flavour of the POKeBLOCK, it gains (Level * 1.1)
    points, rounded to the nearest whole number, to each Condition the POKeBLOCK has
    a flavour of.  If, however, your POKeMON doesn't like the flavours of the
    POKeBLOCK, it will only gain (Level * 0.9) points, rounded to the nearest whole
    number, to each Condition the POKeBLOCK has a flavour of.  Since either way, your
    POKeMON gets the same amount of FEEL, it's best to feed it POKeBLOCKs that
    it likes - or, at least blocks that combine its favourite flavour with its
    disliked one, to prevent a loss.  FEEL is very important and must be used
    wisely to get the most out of your POKeMON.  The more points you can get
    per FEEL, the better.
    
    A POKeMON can eat as many POKeBLOCKs as it wants to before it is full, but
    only if its FEEL value (which is represented by the stars that appear around
    your POKeMON on the Condition screen) is less than 255 total.  Each POKeBLOCK
    has a FEEL value, and this value is shown to you.  So, if you keep track of
    how much FEEL your POKeMON eats, you can tell how many more POKeBLOCKs your
    POKeMON can eat.
    
    Note that if your POKeMON has 254 FEEL, it can still eat any POKeBLOCK, even
    if it has a lot of FEEL.  In fact, when you're very close to 255 FEEL is the
    best time to feed high-FEEL POKeBLOCKS, since at that point a low-FEEL block
    is going to fill up your POKeMON anyway - so you might as well go all-out!
    
    If you visit the chairman of the POKeMON FAN CLUB in SLATEPORT CITY, you can
    recieve a spell Scarf.  To get a Scarf, your lead POKeMON must have 200 or more
    points in a particular Condition.

     V.    Reasons for Contests
    ********************************************************************************
    
    While Contests may seem silly to some, they are a little more useful than one
    might think.  There are number of rewards.  Sure, most of the rewards aren't
    all that useful, but still...
    
    Winning in a Contest at any Rank gives you a Ribbon.  All of the Ribbons are
    similar.  Their text looks something like this:
    
    [CONTEST] CONTEST [Rank] Rank winner!
    
    Where [CONTEST] is the Contest-Type, and [Rank] is the Rank.  They're also
    colour-coded, as they should be.  If you don't know these colours by now,
    I pity you.  Here they are, in case you really didn't know:
    
    COOL = RED
    BEAUTY = BLUE
    CUTE = PINK
    SMART = GREEN
    TOUGH = YELLOW
    
    Those are the colours of the ribbons.  They're also have interesting designs.
    Normal-Rank Ribbons are simple, with two out-and-down oriented ribbons.
    Super-Rank Ribbons are about the same, but go straight down more, and have white
    stripes on them, horizontally.  Hyper-Rank Ribbons have the same downwards ones,
    but without the stripes, and also have two ribbons sticking out the side.  Last,
    Master-Rank Ribbons have stripes, side-ribbons, and one ribbon sticking out of
    the top.
    
    When you beat a Master-Rank Contest after already having the Master-Rank Ribbon
    with that particular POKeMON, you get a neat reward!
    
    Yay, you get a LUXURY BALL!  Yes, only one.  Yes, it's just like a POKeBALL but
    black and red.  It's rather good looking, however, and is good for catching
    Golbat and other POKeMON that evolve when they like you since - yes, you guessed
    it! - it starts POKeMON out with a higher friendship with you.
    
    If you thought the prizes would stop there, you're wrong!  If you've talked to
    the Museum curator in LILYCOVE CITY, before doing a Master-Rank Contest, there's
    a chance your POKeMON will have its portrait drawn for the Museum!  Yay!
    
    To do this, you must win Master-Rank and have at least five Hearts on the
    Results Screen.  Your POKeMON also earns a Ribbon for this!
    
    RIBBON for being chosen as a super sketch model.
    
    It is square, like the picture frame, and has two ribbons sticking out of the
    lower left and right corners.  It is blue.  Excitement...
    
    In any case, the portraits are actually pretty interesting.  It can be fun
    trying to make the best-looking portraits.  I mean, sure you can win the CUTE
    Contest with a Barboach, but the resulting picture isn't the most adorable of
    sights to see.
    
    Since you can replace any older pictures with newer versions whenever you win
    a Contest, fulfilling the above requirements, feel free to see what the pictures
    look like, first, and then decide on your portrait-able POKeMON.
    
    It's not even over yet!  After getting all five paintings, talk to the Museum
    curator.  Voila.  You've just earned a brand new GLASS ORNAMENT for your Secret
    Base.  It looks like a Pidgeot, similar to the statues in the museum, but made
    out of glass (of course).
    
    That's it for your rewards, other than pure satisfaction, however!
