Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
Review by andyraymer
"One of the first games I got for GBA, and I still love it!"
Like I said in my tagline, this was one of the first games I got for my Gamboy Advance, and I still love it. It follows the book/movie VERY well and the game just keeps you addicted with the amount of fun there is loaded in this game!
Graphics 8/10
The graphics in this game are pretty good for a 2001 game, but they just didn't impress me too much. They are colourful and the background images are WONDERFUL but when you look at one of the people in the game, you can tell that a little bit more time could have gone into them.
Background images are clear, crisp, colourful, detailed, ornate, and more words that can describe them. They show that a lot of time was put into them and you can respect the game for showing such graphical phenomenon in a Gamboy Advance game!
The characters were not a highlight of the game though. They were pretty NES type, or as newer gamers would knew them as, 8-Bit type. You can tell who the characters are easily because of the specific details about each character, like Harry Potter for example. You can see his glasses, but if didn't have them, you couldn't tell it was him. When you are trying to learn spells though, the characters were more detailed, and I wish that the graphics always looked like that!
Sound 9/10
I have to admit. This game had great sound. The voiceovers sounded like the movie voices...sometimes...and when you hit an object, the right noise came. The levels of volume were pretty good, although sometimes, with full volume, you still could hardly make out some of the noises. But that didn't affect the overall score of this game too much.
Difficulty 9/10
This game is VERY hard. Not because it is confusing or anything, but because of the tasks you had to do, and the fact that you only have 5 HP for the whole game, you might see your timer is above 10 hours and you are not half way through the game. The score I gave (9/10) is a better score for people above the age of 11, but people 10 and younger will have a VERY hard time beating this game so they might rate the score a 6 or even lower!
Length 7/10
This game is pretty long, but not long enough to compare to the book. The dialogue were very long sometimes which really cut back on the amount of game space they could hold in one cartridge. And if you have beat the game once, the game will be VERY short because you will know how to do everything perfectly so you will not have to keep re-doing tasks so that wasn;t the best part of the game.
Control 8/10
The control in this game is pretty good. The walking around is perfect, the buttons were straight-forward and you never wish that the R button did some other feature and the A or B button should have done something different. They were all good. But then came flying. This is where the score lost 2 marks. The flying controls are VERY difficult to master, even on the beginner mode. They have a weird system of turning with the opposite button and instead of down making you go higher in the air, it makes you head north and vice versa with all the controls. It makes Quidditch especially hard to win!
Gameplay 10/10
This is always a hard topic to cover, but the game delivers crisp, and new gameplay action that would appeal to basically any GBA fan, or Harry Potter fan. Not a single flaw here!
Value 8/10
The game will be one of the greatest GBA you will ever own, but after beating it 5 times, you wont want to play it. You'll love it, but not want to play it. Its is bizzare but true! Do NOT pay over $30 (after 2003, in earlier years, no more than $45!!!) as it will not be really worth it.
Rent or Buy???
BUY this game because it is a great game.
RENT this game if you are older than 14.
BUY this game if you love Harry Potter.
RENT this game if you just want a game to pass the days until Christmas!
BUY this game if you want a REALLY fun GBA game!
OVERALL=8.4=84%=8/10
