"Hands down, the best 2D shooter for GameBoy Advance"
Game developers these days are so caught up with making console games these days, they seem to have forgotten us handheld gamers. Most game we see on the GBA these days: PORTS! Luckily the good people of Konami decided to show us a ray of light in this gloomy world of rehashes: It's called Gradius Galaxies.
GAMEPLAY - This is a great game for killing time, but it demands much attention and split-second decisions. Exactly how hard is it? Depends on how you like it. There are three difficulty settings for every skill level. This game can either be too easy for a novice, or too hard for a pro. You can obtain power ups from red orbs that are dropped by certain enemies. If you collect a certain amount, then you can upgrade your ship to have more weapons, be faster, or have a sort of clone of itself. There are also three different types of ships to choose from: Balance, Wide Area, Power, and Air to Ground. There are also two types of shields to select, a strong shield that temporarily protects you from a frontal assault, or a surround shield that lets you take damage from all sides, but is weaker than the former. Either way, this game is pretty challenging, but still very fun, even though you might sometimes find yourself screaming at your GameBoy after losing.... AGAIN!
Besides, if it gets too intense, there is a hint mode that shows you some strategies to getting through each level.
STORY - Story, what story? Basically just your basic ''invaders are coming, save the planet!'' story. Besides, shooter games have never been exactly hailed for their story lines, have they?
GRAPHICS AND SOUND- Graphics? STUNNING! Never in the SNES days could you even imagine the detail that is put into this game. Vibrant backgrounds and HUGE boss enemies bring the game to life. The programmers obviously paid much attention to detail. This game provides a heaping helping of eye candy.
The sound effects and music are good, too. The MIDI soundtrack isn't the best you'll ever hear, but it suits the game just fine. Besides, you'll be too busy fighting aliens to notice the music.
REPLAY VALUE - Once you've beaten the game, you won't want to play it for a little while. But as soon as you remember how much fun it is, you'll find yourself blasting enemies to oblivion once again! You will find yourself coming back several times.
BUY OR RENT? - Well, this is entirely up to you. I would suggest renting first, then if you like it, buy! Personally, I think it's worth the 30$ I paid for it.
Game play: 9
Overall score: 9/10
Conclusion: In the midst of all the remakes, Gradius seems to have lost its place in store shelves. It really is a shame, most people don't know how much fun they're missing out on. This is a great game that belongs in every GameBoy library.
