"Multiplayer Zelda, what else needs to be said?"

How about it, multiplayer Zelda with a great classic Zelda game tacked on for added bonus? Sounds like a good deal to me! This is game is definitely worth the price. For the price of one game, you’re getting Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past, which is quite possibly the best Zelda game ever made, and a brand new multiplayer hack and slash session, which is tons of fun.

First of all, Link to the Past is still amazing. It has a great story and plot, it has good graphics, the fighting is excellent, and the whole design of the game just feels great. From start to finish, you’ll enjoy every moment. The game is pretty much the same as the SNES classic, but with a few changes. First, a few dialogs were altered. Nothing major, just a change every once in a while. Secondly, there’s a new side quest that can be done, however it can’t be done until after you’ve gotten at least 10 hero medals in The Four Swords. This side quest gives you a powerful new ability, which I won’t spoil for you. Let’s just say that it’s quite cool. Also, there’s an entirely new dungeon, called the Palace of the Four Sword (yes, no s at the end). It cannot be done until after you’ve completed the Four Swords. It is quite challenging, and will take a lot of skill to beat, making it worth while to play multiplayer with one or more friends. There’s new sound effects added in, such as Link’s yelling when he slashes his sword. Also, the item menu is slightly different, although not by much.

Besides those small changes, Link to the Past is just the great game of long ago. My only complaint is that the controls take some getting used to. I hated using the R button to lift things, run, etc at first, but I’ve gotten used to it. It can be irritating at first, but it doesn’t detract from the gameplay much. With that complaint aside, the transition from SNES to GBA was a smooth one.

Now, for the new. The Four Swords is the first ever Zelda game to be multiplayer. Well, I wish they would’ve done this sooner, because this is just sweet. This game can be played with anywhere from 2 to 4 players. The more the merrier, because the game actually alters itself, depending upon the number of active players. There aren’t many dungeons, but the ones that are there are nice. They’re somewhat long, making the experience last longer. Also, they’re somewhat randomly generated. The game seems to randomly pick from a few possible levels when sending you to a new area.

The gameplay itself is awesome. Basically, it’s just like Link to the Past, only with more people and new items. You have to both cooperate and compete in this game, which makes things very interesting. You have to cooperate to both complete the levels, and collect rupees. You see, every rupee that anyone gathers is added to a communal pool. If anyone dies, a certain amount of rupees are spent from that pool, to revive that player. If you don’t have the cash to pay for someone’s death, then it’s game over for everyone. Also, at the end of three of the levels, you will be sent to a Great Fairy. If you have a certain amount of rupees in the pool, she’ll give you one of the three keys needed to reach the final level.

At the same time, it also keeps track of how many rupees each individual player collects. The Link with the most cash at the end of the stage earns a hero medal. Collect 10 to unlock a new sidequest in LttP. This makes things much more interesting, since it causes players to fight over cash. You’ll have a lot of fun trying to get to rupees and treasure chests before your friends do. You can even grab them, and throw them into pits, to slow them down. The greediest player wins it all!

All in all, this game is one you don’t want to miss. Link to the Past is an excellent game, and Four Swords is a heck of a lot of fun to play. Gather up your friends and your GBA, and you won’t regret it for a second!
