Superman: Countdown To Apokolips
Review by J J N
"Ha, nice try. Unfortunately, it came out half baked."
Introduction
I picked up a copy of this game and said to myself in half jest: I hope they don't disappoint me. My worst nightmare came true: it did. I was hoping for half decent game play, nice story line and graphics. I also hoped for the game to capture the general feel of being the man of steel! But unfortunately, it didn't. It came out as a half baked game.
Perhaps the game developers should've put it back in the oven and let it fully cook, because some of the elements in the game is still raw. What? Why? Read on and I'll tell you.
So here we are, yet another attempt to make Superman fit inside your GBA. I was hoping this game to capture my attention for 15 minutes at least, but I found it too mundane.
Game Play
Basically you play as Superman. You hover around, fly a bit, and swoop down to take out the enemies. Good? Not really. While it sounded good, the implementation of the game play is poor..
Besides from shooting laser out of your eyes and punching, you have no other means of disarming your enemies. No super punch, kicking, throws, stomps, nothing. The fighting is overly simple and gets repetitive. When you engage the enemies, it seem to be more like a chore then something you do for fun.
Sound / Music
The background music hardly fit's the theme of the game, as its more of cyber techno then instrumental music like in the Superman cartoon show. Ditto for sound affects -- sounds like something straight out of the 8 bit era.
Graphics
Now, the graphics is half decent, I must say. Its pseudo 3D, with an fixed over view camera. The pixels are all right; you couldn't see too much detail in the game, but its adequate. The 'cut scenes' in the game features some nice pictures of the cartoon Superman.
Conclusion
While it's a nice try to make a Superman game for the GBA, I say they should have worked on it a bit more to enhance the game play. For example, Superman should've been able to do more fighting moves, and perhaps add some puzzles in the game to pique the gamer's interesting.
This game fails to deliver. Better luck next time!
