    III. Controls

Controls are different depending on what kind of Race Controls you pick:
Auto, Basic, and Advanced. I will refer to the E-Brake (Emergency Brake) as
the Handbrake throughout the entire FAQ. Nitrous is not available in Drift
    Mode.

    For Circuit, Sprint, and Drift:

    Auto Controls:

    Accelerate: A
    Brake: B
    Steer Left: Control Pad Left
    Steer Right: Control Pad Right
    Nitrous: L Shoulder
    E-Brake: R Shoulder
    Look Back: Select
    Pause: Start

    IV. Game Modes Overview

    Quick Race:

Best known as Single Race, this mode allows you to race a track against 3
racers in different modes. This mode is also good to play when you want to
    practice different tracks.

    Quick Race Modes:

Circuit: This mode pits you against 3 racers on a single track. First one to
finish a set number of laps wins the race. You can choose up to 4
laps, 3 difficulty modes, and 6 tracks with their reverse versions,
for a total of 12 tracks.

Sprint: This mode also pits you against 3 racers, but the first one to reach
the desired point wins the race. There are 3 difficulty modes and
you can choose from 6 tracks.

Drag: In this mode, you race from point A to point B in a straight line
against 3 racers. You have to shift when the needle on your left turns
green, or your engine will overheat, causing you to lose the race.
Once again, there are 3 difficulty modes, and 4 tracks with their
reverse versions, for a total of 8 tracks.

Drift: This might be new to most racers, and this may be easy, or real hard.
The objective here is to have the most points by sliding with style
through turns. There are no difficulty levels here. You can choose
up to 4 laps and choose up to 8 Drift Tracks and their reverse
versions, for a total of 16 Drift Tracks.

    Go Underground:

THIS is probably the reason why you should get this game. In this mode, you
start off as an unknown street racer who tries to progress up the ranks to
become "the king of the racing world," as some CPU racers call it. You can
upgrade your car with different parts for both visual and performance. You
compete in all racing modes against different CPU opponents, who might
challenge you for revenge so they can regain their spot in the rankings.

    Multiplayer Mode:

I will not put this section up yet until I can find a friend who wants to race
against me. But so far, I heard that you can link up to four players and race
    in all four modes.

    Customize Car:

This is where you tune up your "weak" machine to make it the fastest, and the
coolest car out of all the racers. See the "Customize Car Mode" for details on
    how to unlock parts.

    Options:

Here is where you can adjust the music and SFX volumes, look at the credits,
and save and/or delete your profile. Too bad you can't listen to the songs
    by themselves, though.

The Skyline is the best car in the game, stat-wise, but it actually depends on
the way you drive when you have a car other than the Skyline.

As you can see, almost every car will achieve good stats with the best parts
    equipped.

    ______________________________________________________________________________

    VI. Go Underground Mode

VI.1 Introduction (taken straight from the cartridge itself)

Welcome to Underground Mode. In this mode, you will be entering the world of
underground street racing. You will start as an unknown racer and will need
to rise through the ranks of the underground racing world in various racing
categories with the ultimate goal of becoming the next street racing
    champion.

    VI.2 Buying Your First Ride

So, which starting car will it be? I have to recommend starting with the
Impreza, as it has better stats than the Focus or the Lancer, and it could
have a 10 in Top Speed as you upgrade it, but by that time, you'll have a
different car in your garage, but that's my opinion.

    Car Prices:

    Ford Focus (Price: 8000)
Subaru Impreza 2.5 RS (Price: 9000)
    Mitsubishi Lancer (Price: 8500)

    VI.3 Preliminaries

Here's where you start off. The preliminaries, at the very bottom of the
ranks. These races are all Circuit Mode races and since you're challenging
them, they get to pick the track and all other things. You might have a bit
of trouble in your first race if the CPU chose the Atlantica track, but even
though they have the vinyl and all, the CPU cars are actually stock models.
You'll gain rewards only when you win races. When you finally beat the racer
ranked #1, it's not the end yet... You've only just begun to race...

    Cutscene after Preliminaries:

We've been watching your progress and decided you're good enough to join the
big leagues, albeit at the bottom.

    End Cutscene

    Now you're getting there...

    VI.4 Underground Ranks

By the time you get here, you should have at least most of the Level 1 parts
installed in your machine, and you should have gotten a new car. This part
of the Underground Mode features all 4 racing categories for you to compete
in, and like the preliminaries, you'll start off at the bottom of each rank.
The races are harder and the rewards are better. You'll be unlocking cars
such as the RX-7 or the Skyline here, and you'll be also unlocking Level 3
    parts.

Note: You can race any category in any order.

    VI.4.1 Circuit Rankings

You should know the drill here, although some races are in the Hard
difficulty level, so it'll be a real race. If your car has at least most
of the Level 2 Performance items installed, it'll be a little bit easy, but
    still challenging.

    VI.4.2 Sprint Rankings

Finally something new to compete in. If you've practiced well enough in the
Sprint tracks at Quick Race mode, then this is gonna be a breeze. The CPU is
a little bit faster than in Quick Race mode, so you'll have to at least use
your NOS somewhere near the finish line.

    VI.4.3 Drag Rankings

This is probably the hardest category to race in. "Perfect Shifts" no longer
apply to the CPU. I found out that the computers go real slow because they
automatically shift to 6th gear, then they catch up. If you are going real
fast and a CPU computer bumps you suddenly, there's a big chance that you
might instantly overheat, so constantly press Select to see if anybody is
trying to bump you and don't constantly keep changing lanes, because it'll
only hurt you bad, REAL bad. Learn where the finish line is for each track,
and only use your NOS when you're somewhere near the finish line. The CPU
    sometimes do this.

    VI.4.4 Drift Rankings

The CPU here will almost always have a decent score for you to beat. You can
also tell what track you are racing on and how many laps are there just by
looking at the CPU's score. Remember that when you hit the wall, even just
barely touching it, you'll lose the score you got while you were sliding.

If you finally rank #1 on ALL 4 categories...

    !!SPOILER!!

    Cutscene:

Congratulations! You are now the underground champion! You have unlocked all
    the cars and upgrade parts.

    !!SPOILER!!

CONGRATULATIONS! YOU JUST BEAT ONE OF THE BEST GAMES EVER MADE ON THE
    GAMEBOY ADVANCE!!

    VI.5 Challenging Others

A major rule in NFS:U is that the racer who is being challenged gets to
choose the settings for the race, and that includes the track, laps (Circuit
or Drift), and opponents (Circuit, Sprint, and Drag). This means that when
you challenge a CPU racer, that racer will choose the settings for that
race. In Drift, you can tell which track you are racing on and how many laps
there are, just by looking at the score you have to beat. The higher the
score, the longer and maybe harder the track is and there might be more
    laps.

    VI.6 When You Are Challenged

This is a unique feature that is only on the GBA. Racers that you have
defeated may get ticked off at you and when you select View Challenge Board,
the racer below you in the ranks might challenge you. Since you are the one
who's being challenged, you get to select what track you are racing, how
many laps there will be, and how many opponents are racing. Do not go on a
track in which where you think you'll lose.

    VI.7 Tips For Winning Races

    Circuit

To avoid bumping into walls (which is very hard due to the graphics), try to
use your handbrake, or "flash" your brakelights by tapping B before you
turn. Use your NOS on straightways like the small tunnel in the Stadium
    track.

    Sprint

The CPU will be fast, even on the Easy difficulty, and since this is a race
from point A to point B, you're going to have to use your NOS somewhere near
the finish line. It's best to practice up in Quick Race mode before racing
    in this board.

    Drag

Don't worry if the CPU chooses the Commercial track (the one WITH traffic).
All you have to do is stay on the left most lane and hope you won't get hit
by traffic. Again, learn when the finish line is coming for each track and use
your NOS to blast your way there. "Perfect Shifts" won't make your car go any
faster once it reaches top speed in this version of Underground.

    Drift

The only way you'll lose here (besides having a lower score), is when you
are facing or going the wrong direction for about four seconds, when a
warning of a car with a diagonal line through it appears on your screen,
then flashes, and then you get eliminated. So, learn which way is forward by
    practicing in Quick Race mode.

And above all, try to keep your lead!!

    VI.8 Track Strategies

Here are the strategies for winning on different tracks in different modes.
Circuit, Drag, and Drift Modes are the only modes that have tracks marked with
    (R) on them, meaning reverse. The strategy for these tracks are almost the
same as their normal counterparts, only it's reversed. These strategies are
based on their normal tracks and in the Auto control setting. The NOS used
here is the Direct Port System Performance part.

    Circuit Tracks:

    Stadium

A very easy track that is filled with a few 90-degree turns. The only place
where you have to watch out is the first tunnel, where when it ends, features
a very sharp left turn. I recommend going slow while you're inside, then hit
the handbrake and speed out of the turn.

    Market Street

A fairly easy track that is also filled with a few 90-degree turns. From the
start, when you reach the part with the chain-link fence, slide using the
handbrake and use your NOS in the open space, taking care not to hit the
tips of the brick walls. This track has the small open space featured in
the Stadium track, so don't slide off into there when you turn.

    Terminal

This track is for intermediate racers, since it has medium amount of 90-degree
turns and combines a few places from both Stadium and Market Street. You'll
encounter the same first tunnel in Stadium, so I recommend that you slow down
before you turn. Then, tap your NOS while in the second tunnel. You'll then
reach the open space featured in Market Street, but this time, you're going
the other way. I suggest you just tap the NOS and slam on your handbrake when
you turn left in the part with the chain-link fence. Maneuver your way
through the streets, and before you reach the finish line, try not to bump
    into the building nearby.

    Olympic Square

This track has a LOT of traffic in it, so racers on the Hard difficulty
setting may find themselves hitting or being hit by traffic. Try to avoid the
traffic by either slowing down or taking the risk and shooting away with your
NOS. Keep an eye on your speed on your first turn or you might find yourself
rubbing against the building. Also, watch your car while in the first tunnel,
as it contains a few hard turns. And finally, since this track also has a few
hard turns, use your brakes or your handbrakes so you can slide in the turns.

    Inner City

Immediately turn left after you exit the stone tunnels, or you'll hit the
building and spin out if you're going too fast. Due to the quality of the
graphics (if you're not used to it yet), remember to turn hard to your right
after the second set of traffic. Be careful when you reach the city and drive
at about 100 while keeping your finger on the handbrake, ready to press it.
Slow down when you finally enter the stone tunnels again. If you're racing
this track in reverse, slow down when you reach the stone tunnels or you'll
find yourself flying towards the stone wall, which slows you down.

    Atlantica

This track is the longest out of all the tracks and also one of the hardest.
Slow down when you reach the second tunnel so you can easily slide out of
there when you reach the bottom of the hill. Slam the handbrakes when you
go uphill within a few miles. Hold left and use your handbrake if necessary
when you reach the next tunnel and use your NOS when you're out of the turn.
After the set of traffic, slow down and slide through the hairpin, then
immediately turn right into the bridge. Like in Inner City, turn right after
the next set of traffic into the 90-degree turn. Maneuver your way through
the city and turn right then left into the red finish line.

    Sprint Tracks:

    Liberty Gardens:

Immediately go to the left as soon as you start so you won't get hit by the
incoming bus. Make a hard right and use your NOS, then turn right and slide
left, making sure not to get stuck into the open lot. Make a hard right and
slam on your NOS to reach the line.

    Broadway

Tap your NOS when you start and turn left. Make a right at the turn with the
chain-link fence. Slam on your NOS when you reach the open field, taking care
not to hit the tip of the brick wall. From here, use your NOS all the way to
    the finish line.

    1st Avenue Truck Stop

Use your NOS for about one second, then turn right. Slide left then use your
NOS again while you're in the tunnel. Be careful not to get hit by traffic and
slide right through the turn. Slide right again and when you turn left, hit
the NOS to the finish line.

    9th and Frey

Use your NOS for one second and make a hard right when you go uphill. Avoid
the traffic, then make a left. Make a hard left again and turn right. When
you're near the green and black overhead sign with a "P," slam the brakes and
make a hard right. When you get out of that tunnel, turn left and make another
left to enter the tunnel. Use your NOS on the straightway, then turn left.
Avoid the set of traffic, then turn left and slam on the NOS.

    Spillway

Turn left and use your NOS while turning right. Turn right then make a hard
left. Use your NOS while avoiding both sets of traffic and make a hard left.
Turn right then left, then make a hard right. Go uphill, brake early and turn
left right into the next section, then shoot right to exit that section. Turn
left, then another left and slam on the NOS.

    Drag Tracks:

    14th and Vine

This track is a basic one. Use all of your NOS about 2 seconds after you exit
    the tunnel.

    Highway 1

Another basic track. Use your NOS about 1 second after you pass a black
    building on your left.

    Main Street

Don't be afraid to race on this track, even though the name sounds like it has
traffic. It actually doesn't. This is actually a track filled with hills,
which might affect your speed and timing when you shift. Use your NOS after
    the last hill.

    Commercial

Now THIS is the track WITH traffic. There are three sets of them, with the
first one being probably the most dangerous one. When you start, immediately
change lanes to the left most lane. When you reach the first set of traffic,
either you slow down or risk it and shoot ahead. Use your NOS after the
    third set of traffic.

    Drift Tracks:

    Drift Track 1

Just keep sliding left in this track.

    Drift Track 2

Watch your car when you go downhill, or you'll hit the wall if you're not
careful. When you go uphill, turn left, then right, then left, and finally
    another right.

    Drift Track 3

When you get to a four-way intersection, go straight. Keep going and you'll
cross the same intersection. Just cross it and continue.

    Drift Track 4

Watch your speed on this track, because this track contains a lot of 90-degree
    turns.

    Drift Track 5

This track is kind of long, and is also contains tricky turns. Be careful when
    going on this track.

    Drift Track 6

This track is not that long, although there is a confusing turn after the
    tunnel, so be careful.

    Drift Track 7

This track has a few hills. The final hill can make your car fly and probably
make your car hit the wall if you're going too fast.

    Drift Track 8

Watch out for a small horizontal island after you start. Also, slow down while
you're in the hairpin near the finish line.

    VI.9 Trading Cars

While in Underground Mode, you can only carry one car at a time. You can trade
cars anytime you want by selecting Customize Car at the Underground Mode main
menu screen, then selecting Trade Cars. Locked cars will be available when you
get them from after winning races. When you trade cars, whatever Performance
parts you bought and whatever paint and/or window tint is on your car when you
trade it, the new car will have them.

    VII. Customize Car Mode

This is where you can equip parts to your ride to make its stats go up with
Performance parts, and/or change the way it looks with Visual parts. Each set
of parts has three levels for you to unlock. "Level 4" upgrade parts are
automatically unlocked when you unlock all cars in Underground Mode, but you
still have to buy them in Underground Mode.

    VII.1 Camera Controls

This is really useful if you want to see what your Roof Scoops look like.
These controls work when you select a car to customize and/or race.

    VII.3.3 Window Tint

Window Tints are locked from the start, so you have to unlock them in
Underground Mode. I'm not very good at telling colors apart, so I'll indicate
which horizontal set of colors is which Level.

    -Top 2 Rows (Level 1)
    -Middle 2 Rows (Level 2) (Price: 350)
    -Bottom 2 Rows (Level 3) (Price: 800)

    VIII. Differences From Consoles

Here, I'll list some of the major differences betweeen the consoles and the
cartridge versions of Need For Speed: Underground.

    What the consoles have:

    -More cars
    -More songs
    -More parts (Neon Lights)
-Brand name parts like BBS, Momo, etc.
    -Better graphics

    What the cartridges have:

-Opponents that ask for a rematch (and they even say stuff like "Hey, let's
     race. Right here, right now!")
    -No loading scenes
-Cheaper price (may differ in other places)

The console versions are actually better, but it's your choice.

    IX. Music

There are only four songs in this version of Underground. These songs can be
bought in their albums, and some are currently on the radio (at least at this
    time of writing)!

If you install any Window Tint other than the default one on your Celica, the
Celica in the opening scene of the game will have the same Window Tint as your
