"An exact port of the NES classic game."
Super Mario Bros. is a classic that forever changed the industry. The 2D platformer, designed by Shigeru Miyamoto, still remains in our minds the most intuitive and addictive game ever. When it first came out in 1985, Mario debuted on a 8-bit machine, Nintendo Entertainment System, and became a huge mainstream success.
The story is very simple, Bowser has captured the princess of the Mushroom Kingdom, and it's the job of the Mario and Luigi(2 player mode) to save her from evil Bowser. That's about all there is in the story, but this game is more about gameplay than about the Story.
For it's time the graphics were very good, and on the GBA, it looks good but at times it is very "sloppy". The main problems with the graphics are when you play the game on your "Game Boy Player". The graphics look terrible on it, but on the GBA they look decent.
Most of the sounds in the game are very basic, typical sound effects found in alot of games, but what helps make this a great game was the great, catchy music it featured. Super Mario Bros. music is some of the most famous game music around, most people who have played a Mario game will be familiar with at least one tune from the game.
Gameplay: 10 /10
The Gameplay is what makes this one of the greatest games ever. This game is very simple to play and figure out. You walk, run, jump, and shoot fireballs, but that is just the beginning, there is so much more to it. There are secret level warps, hidden power-ups, and secret levels!! Some of the power-ups are Super Mushrooms, which make Mario big, Fire Flower, which allows Mario to throw Fireballs, 1-Up Mushrooms, give you an extra life, and the best one is the Star, which make you invincible. There are 8 worlds and 4 levels in each world, which makes for a total of 32 stages to play through. Each level is different and contain such things as lava pools, revolving chains of fireballs, weight bridges, pits, incoming fireballs, mazes, underwater mazes, and at the end of it all...Bowser. This makes for a very solid gaming experience.
Replay value: 9/10
Super Mario Bros. is one of those games that will keep you coming back to play it again and again. It's an easy game to just pick-up and play, but hard enough to give you a challenge each time.
Super Mario Bros. is turning 20 years old and is still a pop culture phenomenon and a landmark in the game industry. Since it first came out it has influenced many games and tons of gamers. Super Mario Bros. was the start of one of the most successful franchises in video game history. Anyone who has not played this game is missing out on gaming history.
