"Never thought I'd be glad to return to the '80s!"
Super Mario Bros. was Nintendo's first game on their first home console, the NES/Famicom. This game made Mario a household word, and ultimately helped shoot the plumber to stardom. In 2004, Nintendo decided to port the classic side scroller to the Gameboy Advance, hoping to reintroduce it to a new breed of gamers...
I can't really comment on the graphics by GBA standards, because Nintendo kept it 8-bit, just like the original. It would be unfair to slam SMB's graphics because this was state-of-the-art at the time. However, it captures the old-school NES look. 10/10.
The sound and music is also exactly the same as the original. The music has 5 main themes, the normal theme(which eventually became the Mario main theme), the underground theme, the sea theme, the Invincibility theme, and the Bowser's castle theme. the top 4 should all sound familiar to Mario fans. The sound is also nice, which ranges from the "jump" sound to the sound you hear when you spit a fireball. Again, grading this for what was available at the time, the sound and music gets a 10/10.
Most importantly-how is gameplay? Well, thankfully, it plays exactly the same as the NES original. Mario still breaks blocks, collects coins, uses mushrooms to become Super Mario(about twice the size as normal Mario), using fire flowers to become Fire Mario(Super Mario plus the abillity to spit fireballs with the B button), gaining temporary invincibility from a Star, and so on. Mario must reach and beat the final level, 8-4, before he loses all of his lives. Every world is split into 4 levels, therefore the game contains 32 levels.(33 if you count the Minus World) However, there are a few problems I have with gameplay. The first one is that the jumping feels a bit imprecise, and be prepared to die, as you may not have played SMB on a handheld before. The next problem is that this version is exactly the same as the NES classic-which means it's mssing all of the cool bonuses from a GBC version called SMB Deluxe.(which includes the Lost Levels, a sequel that was, until 1993 in the SNES game Super Mario All-Stars, Japan only.) Bummer. There is also a 2-player mode, which has your pal playing with you to get as far as you can. The players(Mario and Luigi) switch off after one of them die.
Conclusion:All in all, this is a worthy game to add to your collection, but in this day of free emulation, the price($20 USA) is a bit high for an 8-bit game.
