"Is Thunder Yellow next?"
Well, the Pokemon games have certainly come a long way since Red/Blue and thats good as long as they do something different in each game. Releasing the third game in the generation is filled with extras, like new costumes for the main characters, and different Pokemon to catch, but they aren't much, such is the case with Emerald, but it's still pretty good.
Being a fan of RPGs, I enjoy this nice steady pace of gaming. The free feeling of setting out into the world to fulfill a quest is what I like best. However, not much a quest where you go and catch things and train them to help you beat the game. But it's good because it's very customizable and gives you freedom of choice. It gets repetitive after a while, but it is fun. The battle mechanics are standard turn-based type. Altough im not much of a turned based person, the system works quite well. It still maintains the two-on-two batle from R/S/FR/LG, but the only new thing that they did with the battle system is that if you are in the sight
of two trainers, they will both fight you, this is not much. They tried to add some variety by adding new battle arenas, but they get boring pretty fast. And contests are okay for a while.
The graphics look great for a 2d game. and if you are playing this on the DS, it looks better. The colors are really nice, and some of the minor animations on the field look really nice, but the best ones are the battle animations. Aside from the major attack animations (which still look superb), the pokemon actually move! And I mean MOVE! We are not talking Crystal, the monster animations look better. They hop around and move more realisticly. And this game has cutscenes, too! They also look very nice. You can see you footprints, your reflection in the water, raindrops, and ashes! I wonder if they will have actuall 3D animations for the battles for Diamond and Pearl.
For those of you who don't know, you can start out as a boy or a girl in this game. Each story in pokemon is pretty much the same; kid sets out on a journey to become the worlds greatest Pokemon Master, kid goes around getting badge from gyms, kid confronts evil gangs and gets involved to stop them, etc. The only thing diffrent here is that the evil gangs Team Magma and Team Aqua want to awaken the two most powerful Pokemon in Hoenn. This story lacks variety, but a pokemon story is never that great, but eh, how could it be when you are the main character.
The music as certainly a step-up from past games, but it's only most of the same tunes from R/S. Some more new tunes would have most of the same tunes from R/S. Some more new tunes would have been better. The sound effects are nice and fit the situations perfectly. Water splashing, wind blowing, thunder, rain, earthquakes, it all sounds good.
With all the pokemon there are to catch, the replayability is good, but it will get old after a while. If you like the contests, they will keep you busy. And if you have friends who like pokemon, you'll also have fun. Since the most fun in this game is battling, you'll depend on that more.
Rent or Buy?
Honestly, if you really like Pokemon, you should get it. Otherwise, don't get it if you already have R/S. If you are new at Pokemon, I suggest you try it out first then see if you like it.
