Coming off the success from Mario Golf: Advance Tour (Hell, even I loved it
and I HATE golf games), Camelot and Nintendo have brought us another Mario
sports title, this time returning to the world of Tennis they'd left since
Mario Tennis on the Game Boy Colour.

Listen up you mangy lot, this bit is important. You are free to use this FAQ
for personal reference but if you plagiarize any sections, well... I'll have to
come up with something evil to do to you...

The only place allowed to host this FAQ is:

GameFAQS - http://www.gamefaqs.com

If you see it anywhere else, please contact me at: spatfaqs@hotmail.co.uk

You can also contact me with any questions that pertain to Mario Power Tennis
that AREN'T answered in this FAQ, or any corrections to mistakes I've made
(this does not include typographical errors; I'm not THAT anal retentive about
my work).

Also, do not bother to email me and ask whether you can host this FAQ on your
site, the answer is no. GameFAQs is the only place I particularly feel like
trusting, while sites that have to go soliciting for FAQs strike me as
desperate to get a reputation even a tenth of that GameFAQs has. So don't
bother, I won't even reply to your emails.

v1.30 - Added a new question to the FAQ.

v1.25 - Changed my email address and made some slight formatting changes.

v1.21 - Just added a question to the FAQ since I keep getting asked one
        friggin' thing via email -_-

v1.20 - Really, just tiny little fixes, things I forgot to change when I
        actually finished this FAQ. In other words, I'm a retard XD

v1.10 - Basically just fixing all the PS stuff I got wrong. I think I've got
        it all this time, so this may well be the last update for this. I
        think I'll go do a Mario Golf Advance FAQ next =D?

v1.00 - Corrected the Characters section (I figured I'd got some of the PS's
        wrong there, and was proved right... that I was wrong in the first
        place, that is.), completed the PS section, and that's it, I think XD

v0.90 - This got pretty heavily delayed by me putting a rush on finishing my
        Vagrant Story FAQ. But yeah, I've finally got around to getting this
        out =D?

        Completed the Characters section, corrected player's names, tarted up
        the FAQ section and added a few new questions to it, as well as making
        superficial changes to most of the headings throughout this document.

v0.80 - This contains a basic walkthrough for the Story Mode, and all the
        information about training and gameplay. More stuff does need to be
        added in future versions though.

Just in case, I'm going to explain tennis. It's fairly simple, but bear in
mind that these are the rules of the real game. They're slightly different in
Mario Power Tennis.

The idea of the game is to hit the ball over the net in such a way that your
opponent can't return it. You are not allowed to use any part of your body to
touch the ball, excepting your hand whilst tossing it up for the serve, and
can only touch the ball with your racket.

The court looks something like the diagram below:

 _________________________
|  |                   | M|
|  |  Deuce    Advan-  | O|
|  |            tage   | R|
|  |                   | E|
|T |___________________|  |
|R |         |         | T|
|A |         |         | R|
|M |         |         | A|
|  |         |         | M|
|  |   Net   |         |  |
|=========================|
|  |         |         |  |
|  |         |         | L|
|  |         |         | I|
|L |         |         | N|
|I |_________|_________| E|
|N |   Service Line    | S|
|E |                   |  |
|S | Advan-     Deuce  |  |
|  |  tage             |  |
|__|___________________|__|
         Base Line

The match is split up into sets, games and points.

The point begins with serving, which always starts on the right hand side of
the court, otherwise known as the Deuce court, and goes across the court into
the opponent's Deuce court, in the area between the Net and the Service Line
(The small boxes by the net -See the diagram below). If it doesn't, then this
is a "fault"; the server will get another try to get the serve right, or else
he "double faults", losing the point. If his serve hits the net and goes over,
still landing in the correct part of the court, this is called a "let", in
which case, the server can try serving again with no penalty.

                Server

Once the serve has been successfully completed, the point truly begins, and
will not end until one of the following has occured:

ğ The ball goes out of the court, without bouncing inside of it. In singles,
  the tramlines are counted as out of bounds, but are in play during doubles
  matches. The player who struck it out loses the point.
ğ The ball hits the net and doesn't cross over it. The player who struck the
  net loses the point.
ğ The ball strikes a player. The player struck loses the point.
ğ The ball bounces twice inside one player's court. The player whose court it
  bounced in twice loses the point.

When the point ends, the server moves into the Advantage court, and tries to
serve the ball into the opponent's Advantage court, following the same
statutes as the previous serve did, and the next point begins.

The points are as follows:

Love = No points
15   = One point
30   = Two points
40   = Three points

To win a game, a player must have four or more points, and have two more than
their opponent. If the players are at 40 - 40, then they are at Deuce. Say for
example, Roger Federer is playing Andy Roddick and they are at Deuce in a
game. If Federer gets the next point, it becomes "Advantage Federer." If he
were to win the next point, he would win the game. However, if Roddick wins
it, then it goes back to Deuce. To win the game, you must win the point when
it is your advantage.

Once a game is over, the service changes so that the player who had been
serving is now the receiver, and vice versa. In doubles, however, it can be a
bit confusing. Say Roger Federer and Andy Roddick are playing Lleyton Hewitt
and Mario Ancic, and Roger Federer served first. Lleyton Hewitt would serve
the next game, and then Andy Roddick, then Mario Ancic, and then back to Roger
Federer.

Every six games, the players change ends.

The score is always called with the server's points first, e.g. 15 - Love,
Love - 30.

To win a set, a player must have six or seven games, and two more than their
opponent, e.g. 6 - 2, 7 - 5. If both players have six games each, then a
tiebreaker is used to decide who wins the set. It starts with the person who
served first in the set, and they serve for one point. Then the other player
serves for two points, and they then keep switching service every two points,
and changing ends every six. In doubles, service switches the same way as it
does during normal games, but still on every two points. To win a tiebreaker,
you must have seven or more points, and two more than your opponent.
Obviously, the winner of the tiebreak wins the set.

To win a match, a player must win either two or three sets, depending on
whether the match is three or five sets long. In most tournaments, matches are
three sets long for both men and women, and tiebreakers are possible in all
sets. However, in the four Opens (The Australian Open, The French Open - aka
Roland Garros, The US Open, and the British Open - AKA Wimbledon), women play
three sets and men play five, with tiebreakers not allowed in the final sets.

There are many different types of shot in Tennis, and I would try to explain
them all, but some are impossible without having proper pictures or something
to show you exactly what I mean. ASCII diagrams will not suffice for this XD I
will explain some of them though:

Volley: When you hit a ball before it bounces.
Smash: When you hit a ball that is above you head down towards the ground.
Lob: When you lift the ball up high above your opponents head.
Drop Shot: When you do a soft touch on the ball, just enough to let it drop
           over the net and into your opponents court.
Flat Shot: When you put no spin on the ball at all.

Select the first icon, Story Mode, and you are then shown a room with Max
and Tina in. First select whom you want to play, and then choose whether they
are left or right handed. The next option is the difficulty; blue is easy
while red is normal (After completing the RPG mode once, you can pick hard
mode too). Finally, choose your character's name!

I'll assume that you're playing as Max, so answer all of Tina's questions
however you like. It doesn't seem to make any difference. Once you leave the
Dorms, head to the Restuarant. Upon finding it empty, Tina starts asking some
questions and finds out that some masked players have come to challenge the
Academy's best player, Alex, to a match! Tina runs off to go and watch the
match, so we best follow her.

Leave the Restaurant and head south to the next screen. After some students go
past you, talking about the match, Tina will run up to you, and then you'll
see two of the instructors. Follow them into the Training Center, and you'll
find them trying to get information out of Chris and Mark, the Junior and
Varsity Coaches. Once they've finished talking, leave the Training Center and
head south, south again through the Office, and go all the way down to the
Front Gate. There you'll bump into the President and Alex. After the
conversation there, Tina and Max will run back to the Dorms and go to sleep.

The next morning, answer Tina's questions and then leave the Dorm. Seems to
me like it's time to start training!

This is a VERY crude representation of the stats levelling page. You start by
picking which of the four stats, Power, Control, Sidespin and Speed, you wish
to level, and then the moves, Serve, Stroke, Volley, Topspin and Slice.

X = The level the stat is/will be at
Y = The level the move is/will be at
A = The number of points left to distribute
Z = The total number of points to distribute

With each stat/move, there's a bar to the right of it. The top bar shows what
it currently is, and the bottom shows what it will be. It's important to note
that stats decay, meaning you can't just max a stat straight away, and it'll
remain at maximum without you doing anything to it.

Training is an integral part of Mario Power Tennis. While the mainstay of your
stat points will come from actual match practice, training will help sharpen
your basic skills so you can win those matches easier.

<--[10a.1] Wall Practice---------------------------------------->

On the wall are three pads like below, and they'll flash up symbols. Simply
hit the ball that the pad with the symbol on to get a point. Hitting symbols
with consecutive strokes will double the points you get per hit, volleying
will double your score for that one shot, and a Smash will triple the points
for that shot.You need to reach a target score to pass a round, but if the
ball bounces twice or hits you, the round is over and you lose.

|_____________|  |_____________|  |_____________|

Level One has Circles, which just bounce the ball back normally, as well as
Left and Right arrows, which bounce the ball in the direction of the arrow.
Very simple, just keep control of the ball and move well. You need 30+ points
to clear this round.

Level Two has Circles, Left and Right arrows, and Double Left and Right
arrows. The Double arrows bounce the ball in the direction of the arrow far
more sharply than the Single arrows do. Like the first level, just keep
control and move quickly. You need 60+ points to clear this round.

Level Three has Up and Down arrows that move up and down, and change every hit
as well as every five or so seconds. The Up arrows lob the ball and the Down
arrows drop shot the ball. Just stay in the middle and smash the ball straight
down the center. You should be able to get to about +20 in points and sail
through this. You need 100+ points to clear this round.

Level Four only has two pads, one at the top and one at the bottom, but they
move from side to side. They have Left, Right, Up and Down arrows, and
Circles. Concentrate on the lower pad, but never hit the Down arrows; instead,
lob up to the higher pad. It's important to note that hitting one pad changes
both of them. You need 100+ points to clear this round. As a note, upon
reaching 100 points, the pads will start circling around the wall.

<--[10a.2] Tennis Machine--------------------------------------->

This one is simple enough, you're on a court and on the other side of a net is
a ball machine. It fires balls out and you have to return them into the ball
machine's court. You get extra points for getting it into the section marked
with green corners. Simple, ain't it? Get a high enough score with the limited
number of balls to pass the round.

Level One only requires you to make it over the net. Easy. All of the green
sections will be at the back row, so just use Strong Topspin or Slicespin
shots to reach them. You really should get a perfect score on your first
attempt at this. You have 10 balls to reach 20 out of 50 points to pass.

Level Two, the machine starts to move around, but this is still easy. You will
also need to start doing some drop shots to get a perfect score. You have 20
balls to reach 50 out of 100 points to pass.

Level Three, the court becomes divided into Grey and Orange sections. You need
to hit the ball into the orange section to score at all. Still, this is easy.
You have 30 balls to reach 100 out of 150 points to pass.

Level Four is the only really tricky one. The pace picks up, and you need to
make a lot of dropshots. There are only 50 balls to hit 200 out of 250 points
in, so you need to at least think about aiming for the green corners with
every ball. When you only have ten balls left, the machine starts firing shots
out with insane amounts of curve on, so you need to have your 200 points
before then. I recommend hitting drop shots for the central low targets and
hitting shallow ground shots (top or slice spin shots) to hit the left/right
low targets. Make sure to hit them at the last moment to get as little
distance on them as possible.

<--[10a.3] PS Hall---------------------------------------------->

After getting through the Junior Singles class, you can enter the PS Hall,
where you work to improve your abilities in crazy minigames. If you get
enough points in the games, you learn new Power Shots (PS), which you can then
equip and unleash upon your opponents in matches! To gain access to the rooms,
you need to win matches.

Y = PS Stat Points Total
Z = PS Stat Points Gained
Blah = PS Stat Points Gained will go to
The III||||||| is a pictorial bar showing the level the PS Stat is at.

When you get enough points in an PS Stat, you learn an PS Skill for it. You
can also receive PS Skills that combine multiple PS Stats

When you've learnt an PS Skill, exit to the map view and press the Start
button, before selecting the first icon; it looks like a rainbow coloured
target, and says PS in the name.

in the applicable character's box, and press A and then confirm your choice.

Okay, now that you know how to equip PS, here's a rundown on how to earn them!

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
==[10a.3a] Treadmill==
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

(Unlocked by beating Chris and Kyle in the Junior Doubles)

Located at 1B, it's a giant treadmill, where you have to press B repeatedly to
run and A to jump the objects that get flung out at you.

Level One, keep at the front, so that if you hit anything, you can still
recover, especially that barrel. 100 Steps needed to pass, and you'll get the
Running Save PS.

Level Two, again, stick to the front, until after you jump the barrel. The
treadmill will then tilt the other way (Like \) so be careful you don't run
off the end of it. After the next barrel, it'll go back to horizontal, but
it'll throw things out at you faster. It ends with two barrels in a row, so
watch out for that. 150 steps needed to pass.

Level Three is tricky. You start getting multiple bananas at a time and
several barrels in a row, including four at the end with the steepest climb.
200 Steps needed to pass, and you'll get the Superswift Save PS.

Level Four is infinite. You basically only do it to level up your speed stats.
The maximum possible is 999.

This minigame levels the PS Speed Stat.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
==[10a.3b] Bicep Pump==
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

(Unlocked by beating Shawn and Linda at Senior Doubles)

Located at 2A, this one is just maniacal in nature. Press the A button
repeatedly to control the height the spiked ball is at to pop the balloons
that come floating by. Just watch out you don't get yourself popped.

Yellow = One
Red    = Two
Blue   = Three

Level One, you need to get 100 points in 60 seconds to pass, and you'll get
the Powershot PS.

Level Two, you need to get 150 points in 60 seconds to pass.

Level Three, you pretty much need to get every balloon that comes, which is
far from impossible, just not all too easy. You need to get 200 points in 60
seconds to pass, and you'll get the High-Power Shot PS.

Level Four is infinite, and you HAVE to get every balloon that comes, or else
it's game over. The maximum possible is 999.

This minigame raises the PS Muscle stat.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
==[10a.3c] Jump Gym==
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

(Unlocked by beating Gary and Jet at Senior Doubles)

Located at 2B, is, well... let me just describe it. You break blocks as they
move overhead. How? By jumping into them from underneath. Gee, that sounds
awful familiar...

Level One, get yourself under the edge of where they come out, and this should
be easy. There are 50 blocks to destroy on this level. You'll get the Lunging
Save PS.

Level Two, the green blocks come in groups of three wide, three tall or four
square, so you have to be fast on the jump button. Make sure you're good at
smashing two at once. There are 75 blocks to destroy on this level.

Level Three, the blue blocks often come either three wide and two tall, or two
wide and three tall, but that's not so bad. I actually find this level easier
than the second. There are 100 blocks to destroy, and you'll get the Super
Jump Defensive PS.

Level Four is infinite. The maximum is 999.

This minigame raises the PS Jump stat.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
==[10a.3d] Swift Spin==
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

(Unlocked by beating Kyoko and Micki at Senior Doubles)

Located at 1A, this is even crazier than the Treadmill. Standing tall in the
room are some screws, which you can stand on. Using B to lower the one you're
stood on, A to raise it, and left and right to switch screws, you have to
collect the coins that spawn on screen, whilst avoiding the flame throwers.
Yup, that's right, flame throwers.

Yellow = One
Red    = Five
Blue   = Ten

Level One, Just go for the coins. This should be pretty easy. You need 100
points in 50 seconds to pass, and you'll get the Curve Shot PS.

Level Two, you now have two flame throwers to avoid, and four screws to spin,
so concentrate on the blue and red coins, or time will run out on you. You
need 200 points in 70 seconds to pass.

Level Three, five screws and three flame throwers. Passing this is mostly down
to luck I believe, but I managed with six seconds to spare. Just go for the
blue and red. You need 300 points in 90 seconds to get the Slider Shot PS.

Level Four is infinite. The maximum possible is 999. Also, towards the end,
there'll only be one safe square when the flamethrowers ignite, so you have to
be very fast, and survival is the key idea, not getting the coins.

This minigame levels the PS Spin stat.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
==[10a.3e] Duck Walk==
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

(Unlocked by beating Emi and Roy at Senior Doubles)

Located at 3B, this one is simple in design, fiendish in execution. Hop
through the course on your left foot (B), your right (A), or jump (A+B),
racing against the marker and avoiding the electrified floor pads. This boosts
the same stats that Treadmill does.

Level One, so easy it's ridiculous. I left the marker behind at about 30 hops.
You need to hop 160 times in 60 seconds.

Level Two, still fairly easy. You need to hop 180 times in 60 seconds to pass.

Level Three, you need to jump. A lot. The marker goes damn fast here. It took
me well in excess of fifty attempts to finally nail this one. You need to hop
200 times in 50 seconds to pass.

Level Four is a time trial. Just try to complete the course as fast as you
can. The faster the time, the higher the score. You need to complete 200 hops.

This minigame raises the PS Speed stat.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
==[10a.3f] Rope Climb==
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

(Unlocked by beating Skipper and Roy at Varsity Doubles)

Located at 3A, alternate A and B to climb the ropes quickly, left and right to
switch ropes, grab the flags to continue on up the ropes, and dodge the
electricity that travels downwards. It's notable that you travel faster when
you're holding two ropes than when you're holding one.

Level One, you have to climb 50m in 60 seconds.

Level Two, you have to climb 100m in 50 seconds.

Level Three, you have to climb 150m in 60 seconds.

Level Four is a time trial, where you have to climb 200m as fast as you can.

This minigame raises the PS Muscle stat.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
==[10a.3g] Reflex Rally==
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

(Unlocked by beating Flit and Emi at Varsity Doubles)

Located at 4B, use left for Paper, down for Scissors and right for Rock to
counter the one on the screen. Every time you do so, an item falls on your
opponent's head. Of course, if you get it wrong, something gets dropped on
your head! You need to destroy him before the time runs out.

Level One, you need to drop 20 items on the enemy's head in 60 seconds, and
gets you the Quick Save PS.

Level Two, you need to drop 40 items on the enemy's head in 60 seconds.

Level Three, you need to drop 60 items on the enemy's head in 60 seconds, and
gets you the Quick-Step Save PS.

Level Four is a time trial to see how quickly you can drop 60 items on the
enemy's head.

This minigame raises the PS Response stat.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
==[10a.3h] Tightrope==
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

(Unlocked by beating Paula and Whisker at Varsity Doubles)

Located at 4A, this one is fairly simple; you walk a tightrope and use left
and right to balance yourself with a pole. The straighter you are, the faster
you move. You must finish the course before the Blooper (Octopus) does.

Level One, the only hazard here are the Klepto's (Vulture) that land on the
end of your pole. Use this level to get used to balancing out quickly. You
need to walk 100 meters in 120 seconds, and you'll get the Control Shot PS.

Level Two, water spouts are added to the course, and in the later stages of
the course, they're often quickly followed by a Klepto, so concentrate. You
need to take 100 meters in 100 seconds.

Level Three, oh god, how I hate Cheep-Cheeps (Red Fish). They jump up from
underneath to knock the end they hit up, but also cling onto it, to then drag
it down. And everything comes in big groups. I hate this level. You need to
walk 100 meters in 90 seconds, and you'll get the Flashflop Shot PS.

Level Four is a time trial. You need to walk 100 meters as fast as you can.

This minigame raises the PS Balance stat.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
==[10a.3i] Tacklebot==
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

(Unlocked by beating Chas and Mel in the Island Open Doubles)

Located at 5A, press the A and B buttons repeatedly to power up as you charge
at your enemy, or hold down R and left to block. You must defeat him before
the clock runs out!

Level One, just charge up and charge at the opponent. It's a cakewalk. You'll
get the Tackle Shot PS.

Level Two, start by just charging at him, until he starts to power up his
slap. Block it and then start charging in again. Ad repeat infinitum.

Level Three, block the slaps and thrown head, and charge in whenever you can.
This still isn't difficult. You'll get the Stunner Shot PS.

Level Four, you're timed to see how quickly you can defeat the Robot. This is
actually quite funny, coz', well, you'll see XD

This minigame raises the PS Body stat.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
==[10a.3j] Instinct Drill==
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

(Unlocked by beating Donkey Kong and Luigi in the Peach Tournament Doubles)

Located at 5B, simply match the cards. It's that easy. A selects the card, and
B uses ESP to reveal some of the cards as long as you hold it down.

Level One, simple trial and error will get you this one done in time. You'll
get the Hand-Power Save PS.

Level Two, try to remember the positions they're shown in right at the
beginning to zoom through the first page, and then do a burst of ESP at the
beginning of the second.

Level Three, just got to be as fast as possible.

Level Four, how fast can you finish it?

This minigame raises the PS ESP stat.

<--[10b.1] Junior Training-------------------------------------->

When you first enter the Training Courts, Kate will recognise you from the
Welcome Workout and give you a tour of the Training Courts. The area to the
top-left are the Service Courts, the bottom-left are the Stroke Play Courts,
and the bottom-right are the Net Play Courts.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
==[10b.1a] Kate's Serve and Volley Training==
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

Serve the ball into the opposite court, run up to the service line, and volley
the ball into the opposite half of the opponent's court.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
==[10b.1b] Bandana's Volley Match==
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

After serving the ball, you can only volley the ball from in front of the
service line. No ground strokes allowed. First to win two games wins the
match. This can be a lot tougher than it sounds. If you're not fast enough,
you'll have a tough time reaching the return ball before it crosses the
service line. Try to force him to dive with your serve, so the chances are
that the return ball will be high in the air, so you can smash it easily past
him. When receiving, smash the ball either down the line or cross court. It
should easily make it over the service line.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
==[10b.1c] Red's Forehand Return Training==
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

Simply return the ball to the quarter she serves from, with the correct spin
upon it. So, if you're in the Deuce court, you want Topspin on the shot, and
if you're in the Advantage court, you want Slicespin on it.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
==[10b.1d] Orange's Strokes Match==
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

To get Orange to start the match, answer No and then Yes.

The center of the court is covered with bouncy pads that make the balls go
high when they hit them, which allows your opponent to smash the ball back at
you, always a bad thing. When serving, force him out wide, and then hit a
powerful groundstroke past him on the other side. When receiving, either go
for crosscourt or down the line passing shots. Chasces are, with enough power,
you'll nail him. If you can't beat him with groundstrokes, do a dropshot to
one of the sides, get in to the net and smash a few balls past, or even AT
him. First to seven points wins.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
==[10b.1e] Muscle's Service Training==
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

Just aim for any of the targets on the floor with your serve.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
==[10b.1f] Mohawk's Serving Match==
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

When serving, you only have one shot to win the point, i.e. You serve,
opponent returns, you volley. You must win the point with the shot after the
opponent's return. When receiving, you must stop your opponent from winning
the point with the shot following your return. Serve "down the line" (from
center to center), and then smash a ground stroke either side of him. When
receiving, return to one of the corners and then run in to volley his shot.
First to get a two point lead wins.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
==[10b.1g] Shades Service Clinic==
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

Just serve with the button(s) corresponding to the letter on the floor. You
have to get a "Nice!" on you serves to carry on. Handily, the last serve (the
Power serve) will show you how fast you're serving in the bottom-left hand
corner, so come back here when you've boosted your Power and Serve stats.

<--[10b.2] Senior Training-------------------------------------->

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
==[10b.2a] Kate's Smash Training==
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

After hitting your serve, Kate will hit a lob back to you. Run into the star on
the floor and press A and B simultaneously to do a Smash, which you should aim
into the marked area of court. If you're having any troubles with this, make
sure to serve down the line.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
==[10b.2b] Bandana's Smash Match==
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

Basically, just repeat your training with Pink, but you have to get your
smashes past Bandana to get a point. From the Deuce court, serve Outside in
with Power, and from the Advantage court, serve Inside out with Power. When
receiving, you have to lob the ball back; your best bet is to lob it as far
away from him as you can, so that even if he does make it, you've got to the
net by then, and just volley home the winner. Win two games to win the match.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
==[10b.2c] Red's Backhand Return Training==
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

This is basically the same as the first time round, but this time, reverse the
spin, so if you're in the Deuce court, you want Slicespin on the shot, and if
you're in the Advantage court, you want Topspin on it.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
==[10b.2d] Orange's Strokes Match==
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

As far as I can tell, this is exactly the same as the previous one, so just do
what I wrote the first time.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
==[10b.2e] Muscle's "Spin Service" Training==
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

Much like the previous one, aim for the selected areas of court with your
serve. However, depending upon which you aim for, you must add the correct
spin to it. If you're aiming for the inner selection, you want spin that will
pull the ball back towards the center, and if you're going for the outer
selection, you want spin that will pull the ball out of the court. So, if
you're in the Deuce court, and aiming for the outside, you want Slicespin, and
Topspin if you're aiming inside, whilst in the Advantage court, you want
Topspin for outside serves and Slicespin for inside serves.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
==[10b.2f] Mohawk's Serving Match==
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

This is exactly like the first time around. Serve from the Outside in, with
Power, and return with Topspin down the line. He should only touch the ball to
serve, nothing else, if you're powerful enough.

<--[10b.3] Regular Training------------------------------------->

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
==[10b.3a] Kate's Dropshot Training==
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

Smash your serve from the Inside to Out with Power, charge to the service
line, and do a dropshot into the open court. Easy.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
==[10b.3b] Bandana's Volley Match==
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

Keep your serves down the center, and when Bandana charges in, just lob the
ball over his head. When returning, just lob. This is ricidulously easy.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
==[10b.3c] Red's Passing Shot Training==
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

Smack the ball down the line into the open court.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
==[10b.3d] Orange's Strokes Match==
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

Similar to the previous two, the center of the court is covered with bouncy
tiles, but this time, you must use the opposite spin of that which Orange
plays with. Say he hits a Topspin ball at you, you can only respond with
Slicespin, or at least, that's the idea. However, flat shots count as neutral
though, so you can use them to respond to any type of shot, and you can play
any kinf of shot following a flat shot from Orange.

Also, I think you're supposed to play groundstrokes only, but lobs, dropshots
and volleys all seem to be fine, so I use those to beat him. Seven points to
win.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
==[10b.3e] Muscle's Nice Service Training==
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

Stand in the selected area to serve from and serve into the area selected in
Muscle's court. You have to get a "Nice!" on your serve to get through each
one.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
==[10b.3f] Mohawk's Service Ace Match==
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

You need to ace him. This is really tough if you haven't got your Power and
Serve stats high. The two best ways to ace him are to stand on the inside and
Power Serve (A + B) to the outside, or stand on the outside and Power Serve to
the inside. Get two aces past him and block both of his serves, and you'll win
the match.

Now onto the bread and butter of the game, playing matches against opponents!
I heavily recommend playing both the Doubles and the Singles, always doing the
Doubles first. Why? Coz' Doubles is far easier and it means you can then pour
lots more stats into Max to get him buffed up for the Singles!

(Courts are numbered 1 - 4, from left to right)

Talk to the pair of girls, Sophia and Meg, on the bottom half of the third
court to challenge them for their fourth rank in the Junior Doubles. The match
is easy enough; two games to win a set, two sets to win the match. When at the
net, whack the ball at the opposition net player. Chasces are, you'll hit them
and get the point. It's cheap, but it works oh so well. The other main tactic
is to wait for the net player to come in as far as they can, and then lob the
ball over them into the far corner. This way, neither player can reach the
ball in time. This tactic works on EVERYBODY, so employ it heavily when in
trouble.

The third ranked pair is Mason and Chad, located on the top half of the
third court. They have a lot more power than Sophia and Meg, but they do both
also have awful reaction speed. Mason is slightly stronger than Chad, so I'd
suggest picking on the latter to get easy points.

Sasha and Silvia, the second rank pair is on the bottom half of the first
court. Silvia is by the far the more dangerous of the two, so always pressure
Sasha instead.

The first rank pair, Chris and Kyle, are on the top half of the first court,
with Kyle as the stronger of the two players. Nevertheless, this is all too
easy.

With that, Max and Tina progress to the Senior level, unlocking the Treadmill
in the PS Hall, which I recommend you go and play before returning to play in
the Junior Singles.

Fourth rank is Sophia, who is sat on the bench between courts 3 and 4,
swinging her feet. Serve from the outside to the middle with the applicable
spin to carry the ball further away from her. Return her serves straight down
the line.

Third rank is Mason, the guy with green hair, stood on the third court. Use
topspin serves down the line from the Deuce court and topspin out wide from
the Advantage court. Hit all of your returns as flat crosscourt shots

Second rank is Sasha, the girl with brown hair on the bottom half of the court
just to the left of the entrance. Serve to her like you did for Sophia, and
when receiving, hit your returns crosscourt.

Chris, the first rank, is the boy sat on the bench to the far left. Serve from
the outside in, with the appropriate spin; you'll probably be needing to get
Nice! on each serve to Ace him. Return his serves by taking a step inwards and
then hit a flat crosscourt shot to get Return Winners every time.

(Courts are numbered 1 - 4, from right to left)

The fourth rank pair, Shawn and Linda, are on the top half of the second court.
It seems that at senior level, your opponents will start using super moves, so
maybe you should too =D? When your character starts glowing, hold down R and
hit A to pull off a super move. Of course, these can be blocked, and it takes
a while to charge them back up, so use them with care. Also, your opponents
can do them too, and you'll know them when you see them. I often use my supers
to block theirs with no penalty =D?
Defeating them unlocks the Bicep Pump at the PS Hall.

The third rank pair, Gary and Jet, can be found on the bottom half of the
second court and the top half of the third court respectively. Focus your
attacks on the far slower Gary, so you can drag him out of position for easy
points. Defeating them unlocks the Jump Gym at the PS Hall.

The second rank pair is Kyoko and Micki, whom can be found on the bench to the
left of the second court and the bottom half of the third court respectively.
Defeating them unlocks the Swift Spin at the PS Hall.

The first rank pair, Emi and Ryou, only appear after you defeat Kyoko and
Micki. They are the girl south of the Senior Coach, and the guy on the bench to
the far right.
Defeating them unlocks the Duck Walk at the PS Hall.

                                |   |

The Fourth rank player is Gary, and you'll find him walking around just
northeast of the third court. In the Deuce court, serve down the line with
Topspin. In the Advantage court, serve from outside to in with Power. When
receiving, adjust your returns according to his position on the court. If he's
on the outside, hit down the line, and if he's inside, hit crosscourt, in both
cases making sure to have the right spin on the ball. If he's in the middle,
take a step inside and hit crosscourt with Power. Since he's a large guy,
Gary is somewhat slow, so push the ball wide either side of him and make him
run. Sooner or later he won't be able to reach the ball.

Third rank is the Kyoko, who is sat on the bench to the left of the second
court. In the Deuce court, serve Outside to In with Topspin. In the Advantage
court, serve Outside to In with Power. Hit all the returns crosscourt. She's
pretty fast and her reach isn't too bad, so you want to draw her into a battle
at the net, which you should come out on top of.

Second rank is Roy, who is sat on the bench to the right of the first court.
Serving in the Deuce court from Outside to In, with Topspin, and in the
Advantage court from Inside to Out, with Power. Ryou has a pretty good Outside
to Outside Power serve, and when he does pull one of these off, you need to be
pushing the ball down the line, hard. Ryou likes to play dropshots, so sooner
or later, you're going to have to get into the net, but beware of being
lobbed! In any case, it's a smart idea to push all of your returns down the
line, so as to give you more time to reach the net.

First rank is Emi, who is just south of the Senior Coach. She only appears
once you've defeated Ryou. Serving in the Deuce court from Outside to In with
Topspin, and in the Advantage court from Inside to Outside with Topspin. When
returning, I use a dropshot every time, which is a nice trick if you can do
it. She's a baseline player, so dropshots are very useful against her, whether
scoring the point with them, or just using them to draw her into the net,
where her game is weaker. Be warned though, her Offensive PS is the Slider
Shot, which puts some nasty curve onto the ball, and at the net, it's likely
to go right around you, so make sure to have your defensive PS prepped and
ready.

 \______     ______/
        |   |

Fourth rank is Paula, up in the top-left corner by the scoreboard. I find her
to actually be a very good player, and this isn't the easiest of matches,
especially since she charges her PS so fast. She's got very quick reactions so
she's tough to ace, thus it's best to force her as far out wide as possible,
so serve from Inside to Out, with the appropriate spin to carry it further
away from her. When returning, hit the balls crosscourt. Your best bet in this
match is to end the points quickly with fierce ground strokes.

The Third rank player is Tori, the pink haired girl by the bench at the top-
right side of the court. Again, I find her comparatively difficult. I couldn't
ace her at all, though I managed to make her dive with some of my spin serves.
I recommend Inside to Out serves with spin carrying it away from the court.
When receiving, strike the ball crosscourt; she's usually very quick to try
and pre-empt you hitting the ball to one side and then the other, so that's
your best chance of beating her; wrongfoot her by smacking it down the same
side when she starts to run crosscourt. A good idea is to just charge your
shot up and pick the direction you'll hit it in at the last moment. One last
thing, she likes to lob, so trying to beat her at the net isn't a good idea.

The Second rank player is Whisker, the big blonde dude to the top-left near
Pau. I found this match a lot easier than the last two, though still no aces.
Most of my serving success came from Spin serves pushing him out wide, making
it easy to send the ball flying the other way into open space. For returns, I
hit flat shots crosscourt; Whisker is pretty slow, so he has to run off the
back of the court to get to the ball, which then sets him up perfectly for the
dropshot. Easy points.

Like the doubles, if you want to go for the First rank player, then you must
say Yes to the Coach's question, or else you go straight to the Island Open.

The First rank player is Elroy, the blue haired guy in the top-right, near
Tori. He's rather good, I have to say. Not that you can't beat him easily,
just it's hard to beat him in style. Serve from Inside to Out with the correct
spin on, and return down the line with flat shots. Be warned, he has an insane
amount of curve on his shots (well, not nearly as bad as Spike from Mario
Tennis on the Gameboy Color was), so whenever you see an aura on the ball, you
need to take that into consideration.

Phew, finally done with the damn maps. After the sequence taking you to the
Center Court, talk to Tina, and then head back to the Main Building. After
going down the escalator, two staff members will take you to the Player's
Village. Save in the Academy dorm, and head back to the main building. Look
at the Tournament Table there and you'll see the following brackets:

You'll have a sequence afterwards with Whisker, Elroy and Tori. Once they've
finished talking, follow Elroy and Tori inside the Player's Room and walk into
the circles in the Red Ellipse. You'll be taken to your Quarter Final match!

A fairly easy match, your opponents are Chas and Mel. The only real danger
here is when Mel is at the net; otherwise you should cream them. Defeating
them unlocks the Tacklebot at the PS Hall.

You must save to continue on in the Island Open. After doing so, go back to
the Player's Room and step into the circles in the Red Ellipse to start the
Semi Final match, against Dweezil and Mynx. This one is even easier than the
last, with the only threat coming from Dweezil's Stunner Shot PS. Instead,
focus all your play upon Mynx.

It's the Final! Only a few things need to be said about the match against
Willy and Sheri. Firstly, Sheri has awesome control of the ball, so expect a
lot of wide crosscourt shots from here. Secondly, Willy has some demonic curve
to his shots. Thirdly, Sheri's Offensive PS sucks. It lobs the ball to the
back of the court, so don't worry about her using it; Willy's is far more
scary. With his spin and the pace, it's really hard to block without using a
Defensive PS.

taken to Peach's Castle, up in the sky.

                    ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ

I hate the Semi Final match with a vengeance. Donkey Kong and Luigi make one
nasty team; while in normal play they're not too difficult, they seem to often
synchronise their PS's, and since they're both fast straight ones, you have to
be in just the right position to counter them.

After winning the first match, you're given two options; the first continues
the tournament, and the second lets you leave the Castle to go back to the
Academy, which isn't a bad idea, since defeating Donkey Kong and Luigi unlocks
the Instinct Drill at the PS Hall.

                              ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ

The Finals match, by comparison, is far easier. Bowser and Waluigi do make a
good team, but Waluigi's Offensive PS is a major let down. Maybe it's just me,
but I find it pretty easy to block with normal shots. Otherwise, this match is
basically the same as every other doubles match you'll play. Easy.

After all the faffing about with the cutscenes n' what not, head to the main
building and enter the Player's Room. Step into the Yellow Ellipse, and you'll
start your first round match against Barb.

Even with my power and serve stats maxed, I couldn't ace her, and she hits
your outside-to-in serves quite well, so I recommend serving from the inside
to the outside, with the right spin to carry it away from her. When returning
wide serves, step back to the base line and into the tramlines, hitting a flat
shot down the line. For serves to the body, step in and a flat shot down the
line. For serves to the inside, return crosscourt with the appropriate spin.
Barb's biggest weaknesses are her penchance for lobbing too often and for
always hitting her offensive PS right at you. Get just inside the service line
and volley away; she's pretty easy to beat, and there'll be lots of
opportunities to hit smashes from her lobs, racking up the experience you'll
get for defeating her.

To start your quarter final match, head to the Player's Room and step into the
Yellow Ellipse once more. Your opponent this time is Sass,

If you want to get your aces, you should serve from the outside in, with the
appropriate spin to carry it away from Sass. Funnily enough, I found I had
more success with serves that I didn't get "Nice!" on. Being that Sass is a
big guy, hit your returns down the line with added spin to carry it away from
him. You should be able to get a return ace every single time. Overall, Sass
is far easier to defeat than Barb.

Next up is your semi final match, so back to the Player's Room and into the
Green Ellipse. Your opponent this time is Elroy, whom you should already know
how to defeat, after beating him in the Regular Singles First Rank match, so
I'll be lazy and just paste that here:

He's rather good, I have to say. Not that you can't beat him easily, just it's
hard to beat him in style. Serve from Inside to Out with the correct spin on,
and return down the line with flat shots. Be warned, he has an insane amount
of curve on his shots (well, not nearly as bad as Spike from Mario Tennis on
the Gameboy Color was), so whenever you see an aura on the ball, you need to
take that into consideration.

After defeating Elroy, head back to the Academy hut in the Player's Village,
and talk to Elroy. He'll reply with a few ellipses, so try to leave and he'll
talk to you. I have absolutely no clue what he's going on about, but after you
finish talking to him, head back to the Player's Room and step in the Red
Ellipse for your finals match against Willy.

Frankly, this guy is a pretty awesome all-round player, though he does have
one weakness, and that's his diving shots, which take him far too long to
recover from, so try and force him to do so. When serving, always go Inside to
Out with the spin to take it away from him; he'll probably reach it every
time, but it's better than the alternative. Remember, he has a lot of spin on
his shots, so anticipate it. When returning, you need to step in and hit down
the line when he serves wide, and step back and hit cross court when he serves
into the body or down the line.

Your quarter final match is against Peach. When serving, go Inside to Out with
the appropriate spin. When returning, if you want to hit Return Aces against
Peach, you need to take a big risk, and run as far diagonally outside of the
court as you can. When the ball comes to you, hit a smash (A+B) cross court
and hope it makes it past her. If not, you'll have a lot of running to do to
get to the next shot.

Your next opponent in the semi finals is Bowser, who is a far easier opponent.
His service is incredibly weak; you can get return aces every time. When he
serves from the Outside to the Outside, use strong spin down the line, and for
any other serves, take a few steps back and hit it cross court. In other
words, hit the ball where Bowser will have to run to get to it. For your own
service games, stick to serving Inside to Out with Power. Bowser likes to lob
a lot, so you can get a lot of smashes against him if you play close to the
net.

The final match of story mode is the final against Mario, and this is just
plain embarrasing to play. Like Bowser, his serve is atrocious; do the same
for Mario as you did Bowser and you'll get Return Aces practically every time.
Serving, again, do as you did against Bowser, and in general play, well, you
get the drill. Just like in playing Bowser, but Mario is faster. That's all.
This match is just plain embarrasing.

==Q. Where are the 1Up Mushrooms hidden?======================================

A. Well, I've found five of them so far:

    1) Head to the Training Courts at the Academy, and in the north-east
       corner there's a lake; read the signpost and it will tell you to swing
       as many times as you can in ten seconds. Jam on the A and B buttons to
       make it over 100, and the Water Fairy will appear! She'll give you a
       level up and then disappear. My personal best in this so far is 278,
       using some devious tactics, and I still only got the one level up, so
       stick to plain old fingerwork. It's safer for your GBA/Pad/Keyboard.

    2) Outside the Dorms, check either of the Warp Pipes and say yes to jump
       into it. A 1Up Mushroom will pop out of the Warp Pipe on the other
       side, promptly followed by you!

    3) On the Junior Courts, go to the far right, and there should be an
       opening downwards to some water taps. In this little area, head as far
       to the left as you can, and you should find a 1Up Mushroom to get a
       level up.

    4) On the Senior Courts, head to the left, and go through the opening into
       a small subsection of the Courts. At the end there should be a Drinks
       Machine. Use it to get a level up.

    5) At the Island Open, head to the Outdoor Courts and go as far east as
       you can. There should be an opening below you so head down through the
       trees and you'll find a stone statue. Upon examining it, you'll get the
       following messages: "There's an old statue..." and "I grant greater
       power to the strong." Basically, complete one of the Island Open
       competitions, whether Singles or Doubles, and then examine the statue.
       It'll say "You have done well to come here, possessor of strength. A
       greater power shall now be yours." and you'll get a 1Up Mushroom.

==Q. Have you got any general tips for winning matches?=======================

A. Don't suck. No, really, this game is incredibly easy, even on the Hard
   difficulty, so you shouldn't have any real trouble. However, there are a
   fair few nifty little tricks that may well come in handy during matches.

    1) When raising your stats, the most important ones to pump your points
       into are Power, Control, Serve and Stroke. With those raised up high,
       you should be able to ace most opponents, and then smack your ground
       shots right past them.

    2) You get more experience points for winning a match, if you get more
       special shots in. By that, I mean either Service Aces, Return Aces,
       Smash Aces or PS Aces, with Service Aces netting you the most points of
       all of them.

    3) Play your shots from between the Service Line and the Net; this will
       encourage your opponent to try and lob you, meaning lots of chances for
       you to hit Smashes past them, for extra experience points.

    4) Unless you can Service Ace your opponent regularly, it's a good idea to
       always serve from the Inside to Outside with Power; it'll make it
       easier for you to get onto your opponent's return and finish the point
       quickly.

    5) Drop shots will hardly ever work, and are only to be used when your
       opponent is a mile off the court.

    6) Lob shots are godly, especially in Doubles, as long as one of your
       opponents is right by the net, and you are at least halfway between the
       Base Line and the Service Line.

    7) All Doubles matches are exactly the same, so don't panic. Serve outside
       to in, return down the line, lob the net player and place your volleys
       between the opposing team.

    8) Normally, the computer expects you to keep hitting the ball to the area
       with the most empty space, so you can quite often wrongfoot it by
       aiming in the same area your opponent is in. By and large though, it's
       best to charge your shots early and pick where to hit it when you're
       about to swing.

==Q. Is there any connectivity between this and Mario Power Tennis on the GC?=

A. Nope, not at all, which has disappointed a lot of people, but not me! But
   then, that's coz' I don't have a Gamecube XD

==Q. Are the old Mario Tennis characters unlockable as playable characters or
     even as opponents?=======================================================

A. Again, gotta say no on that score. It'd be kinda hard for Camelot to give
   solid stats to Alex, Harry, Nina and Kate since their stats were boosted by
   those who played Mario Tennis, so you wouldn't really be playing them, if
   you see what I mean. It would have been kinda neat if you could play
   against Kevin though, since you couldn't in the old GBC version.

==Q. What extras can be unlocked in this game?================================

A. Completing your first minigame will gain you access to minigames section
   via the main menu, winning the Peach Tournament in either Singles or
   Doubles will unlock the Peach Dome Court in Exhibition mode and enable you
   to play the Story Mode on Technical difficulty, and defeating every
   character in Exhibition mode with just one character, all at Pro level will
   unlock the Ace difficulty level.

==Q. Can you play in the Island Open more than once?==========================

A. No, you can only play through once each in Singles and Doubles. Stop asking
   me already, dammit.

==Q. What do the stars mean on the character select screen?===================

A. Simply enough, it's a slightly stronger version of that character. Their
   stats are a little higher making them harder to defeat, but earning more
   experience if they are.

If you can think of a good question, mail me at spatfaqs@hotmail.com with
"Mario Tennis" or something akin to that in the topic, and I might include it
in the FAQ =D?
