"Frogger for GBC falls many ribbits short of a Frog Leg Happy Meal"

Evidently, one day a frog decided to stray from the norm and built his dwelling in a mega dangerous environment back in 1981. At that moment in time, Frogger became an instant hit. Whenever a Ms. Pac Man or Galaga could not be spotted, chances are the gators in Frogger was waiting to commit a 211 on your wallet. And now, Frogger makes it's second return to the Gameboy.

GAMEPLAY: Frogger can be played by one or two players alternating turns. The object of the game is to simply avoid becoming roadkill by fifty million redneck truckers, avoid a frog devouring snake and then while crossing the frightful pond, avoid drowning and being eaten alive by atrocious amphibian eating alligators. You must successfully land each of the five dwellings to advance to the next level. Levels gradually increase in difficulty.

CONTROL: Only the touchpad is required to move our favorite amphibian across, well, actually, up to the top of the screen. The controls are responsive. Unfortunately, you better have a steady hand when trying to avoid becoming another statistic while crossing traffic on the New Jersey Turnpike. (8/10)

GRAPHICS: Aside from the excellent color palate, the graphics are basic at best. It is a very disappointing fact that no improvement were made over the original black and white Gameboy version. (7/10)

SOUND: As true to form for retro games, Frogger features the basic blips, blops and bloops of the original Frogger. The game features no compositions of worship, but the original Frogger theme sounds as good on the modern GBC version. (4/10)

REPLAYABILITY: Frogger offers no difficulty settings, options or the ability to save high scores. This is totally unacceptable by modern gaming standards, even for great classics ported into the GBC. At least the original Gameboy version featured a code to be entered to access a special cheat menu. Aside from the special hints given between stages and the edginess to beat your previous high score, the replay value is about as low as price of a Now or Later. (4/10)

OVERALL: Frogger is just one of those games that will find it's way in and out of your closet. It's great to play while waiting at the doctor's office, but definitely not over long periods of time. It is overly disappointing that Frogger does not offer a save feature for high scores and that it is nearly impossible to move Frogger around quickly at higher game levels unless you have steady hands. (But, hey that is what a Super Gameboy is for!) The graphics are nice, but the game is way to plain and basic to waste $30 on. If you really want to enjoy Frogger, purchase the original version for approximately half the price at Walmart or Funco Land and play it on Super Gameboy.
