NFL Blitz
Review by PhildotheGreat
"Why do they do this to good games?"
NFL Blitz for the Nintendo 64 was great and it was also great for the
arcade, but when Nintendo brings popular Nintendo 64 games to the
Gameboy they don't always do as well...
Gameplay=> The idea of Blitz was to be fast paced football action
with beautiful graphics and great commentators. The Gameboy version
seems to capture none of this. The controls are simple and yet are so
confusing on the Gameboy version. You have to play with them a lot to get
them down if you have played the Nintendo 64 version first because they are
somewhat different. They try and have the whole field shot as in the arcade
and Nintendo 64 versions but as soon as the receivers go out they go out of
the back of the screen so you can't see where they are or if they are covered
or not. The players are also very small and hard to see. When you do
complete a pass or do a run play you have a hard time seeing the opposing
teams players and your own because the view is awkward and small. When
you get tackled they have this crappy little movie play from the Nintendo 64
version that shows a guy getting hit. And one of the suckiest flaws of the
game... the play that always succeeds! There is one or two plays that never
fail. My brother has beaten the game 100 to 0 (only because the score
counter stops at 100). Nintendo needs to think about what they are doing the
next time they come out with a great game on the Gameboy.
Audio/Video=> The sound is downright annoying. This little buzz
sound is always buzzing away when you are doing your plays. It is supposed
to be the crowd noise but it sounds like crap. And also they have these weird
little sound effects for kickoffs and punts. No commentator laughing at the
downed players (which I thought was funny in the Nintendo 64 version). And
the graphics are pretty bad. The players are just small blobs as with the
football. There are only two player stances in the whole game, running and
jumping. That's all they do. At the team select screen they do have some
nice team symbols though. This category is what Blitz is known for and it's
pretty bad in this version.
Replayability=> This game takes about two football games of play
and then you are sick of it. At first the game is very tough but then you find
out how to catch a touchdown every time and you just massacre the computer
every time. I strongly recommend not getting this game if you can help it.
Overall=> It's simple: The game just lacks what the good versions
had lots of. Try again Nintendo!
