"Not the best Spawn game, but it's still pretty good."

INTRO: Spawn is a comic book character created by Todd McFarlane back in the early 90 's. Before he created Spawn he worked for Marvel Comics and made Spider-man a huge success. After leaving Marvel Comics he formed Image Comics, whose first comic book was Spawn. Image is a comic book company right up there with Marvel and DC. Spawning a line of action figures, clothing, a movie, animated series, and video games. Now on to the review.

STORY: You're a deadly assassin by the name of Al Simmons. When you were sent on a mission you were betrayed by your "allies" and was sent to Hell. In Hell you struck a deal with the Devil. The deal was for you to see your wife for one last time and then become a leading Hell-spawn, a ranking officer in the Devil's army and lead them to Armageddon. You saw your wife but refused to join the Devil in his army. So now you must find your way back to Hell and defeat the Devil so you can get your soul back, and be human again.

GRAPHICS: The graphics in Spawn are very good for the Gameboy Color and nicely detailed. Spawn moves very fluently and so do his enemies. Spawn looks just how he's suppose to and so do the bosses like the Violator and The Redeemer. The graphics are also very colorful and it makes you feel you're in Spawn's world.

GAMEPLAY: The gameplay is pretty good but gets very repetitive in later levels. Most levels are generic platforming where you control Spawn through alleyways and such, hopping over walls, punching bad guys and picking up occasional weapons like a gun or machine gun. There are Spawn symbols that indicates health and it becomes very helpful. The other type of game is a sidescrolling driving game where you're on the back of a motorcycle, kicking other motorcyclists and grabbing a weapon to shoot enemy vehicles. This level is very unique and so is the battle with one of the bosses in the level, but it does get boring after a little while. The Spawn movie has a part with Spawn riding a motorcycle which is where they got the idea from but this game isn't based on the movie(if you were wondering). In both types of levels, you can hold the attack button down and unleash your chain weapon from your chest, having it whip out at the closest enemy. Either than the chains, Spawn doesn't have any other powers, which kinda sucks.

SOUND: The sound is good in some parts but OK in some others. The music is OK but doesn't fit with the Spawn atmosphere. The sound of Spawn's chains are very good though and so are his punches and kicks. Between levels, you're treated to colorful cutscenes, complete with digitized speech which is a very cool idea.

CONTROLS: The controls are very easy to learn and doesn't take long. "A" is to jump, "B" is to punch. If you jump and press "B" in the air Spawn will do flying kick. The select button is to choose if you want to use your chains or a gun(if you have one). Holding down the "B" button will let you use the chains. And for the motorcycle level the "A" button will let you charge at an enemy and "B" is to kick backwards. And that's it for the controls.

OVERALL: Spawn for the GBC is a enjoyable game and will appeal to Spawn fans. The only bad thing is that the game is way too short. It can be beaten within an hour and a half which will turn away some Spawn fans. Except for that Spawn is good sidescroller with a few unique things. I give it a 7 out of 10 because I think it's a good Spawn game, but not the best. For Spawn fans it's worth checking out, but other people should just ignore it. Thanks for reading my review I hope you find it helpful.
