"A decent game, but Super Mario World was a much better bet"
Sonic the Hedgehog was a well hyped game back in 1991. However, if you ask me, it doesn't stand a chance to Super Mario World. SMW contains a lot of secrets, more levels, and more features. In Sonic the Hedgehog, you just run through the levels as quick as possible. There are the chaos emralds to collect, but they cannot compare to the whole Star Road secret in SMW.
Many people consider these graphics excellent, but I find them bland compared to the graphics in Super Mario World. The colors just don't seem as brialliant, nor are the backgrounds that detailed. The characters are a little small as well. The bonus stages are an exception. They are well done.
The music is good and pretty catchy, but some of the sounds need work. Some of them are a little screechy, and most of them just aren't as lively as the sounds in Mario.
Control is easy to get used to. It's also has quick response as well. There is no problem here, it is near perfect.
Sonic is fun at first, but it doesn't hold my interest for that long. It doesn't have the variety that it should have. You basically just run around each level, and jump on the enemies. Been there, done that.
The emralds will keep you interested for a little while so you can see Dr. Robotnik's little hissy fit at the ending. However, this doesn't take nearly as long as finding all the secrets in Mario. That's what gives Mario the great replay value, the many secrets that are hard to find.
This game was really overhyped. What's the deal with Sonic? Sonic's sequel is quite enjoyable, but SMWs sequel, Yoshi's Island is a much better bet.
