"This Game Is A Cult Classic For A Reason"
Phantasy Star IV is the fourth game of the series. It was released on the Sega Genesis in 1994. It was a magnificent game that was overlooked. Not a surprise it was overlooked due to the SNES domination the console war at the time. I highly suggest any RPG fans give this game a try.
Graphics:10/10:Phantasy Star IV is the best looking RPG on the Genesis. Characters are detailed and so are enemies. Battle backgrounds are beautiful and areas look cool. This game for sure puts the Genesis to it's full potential. What really looks nice are the Graphically impressive anime style cutscenes. Those really pushed the Genesis to it's limit. Like the Graphics the Gameplay is really good too.
Gameplay:10/10:Phantasy Star IV is more old a old-school RPG. You go from town to dungeon. At town you upgrade equipment and rest at the Inn. . If you need money or leveling done you fight. Once your done training you move onto the next dungeon. Exploration and battles are done with a four man party. Encounters are randomly initiated. Battles take place from a first person point of view. Except you can actually see your characters attack when they do attacks. What's great is battles go fast. Animations are done very well and battles still manage to go by quick. Phantasy Star IV also had a wonderful innovation for battles that more RPG's admittedly need to incorporate.
Macros. These allowed you to choose a command every character does then put them all into the Macro. Once, that was done in battle you simply choose that Macro and all of your characters do the commands you put into the Macro. This helps make easy battles far less tedious due to just selecting a Macro and watching your characters automatically own those weak enemies. Speaking of weak enemies the game's difficulty is fairly challenging...
Most random battles in the game are decently hard. Enemies will mostly be easy, but you'll run across some tough dungeons with hard enemies. That do decently high amounts of damage or use debuffs/buffs. As for the bosses in the game they are decently hard. Some bosses are extremely difficult though. You'll for sure need a good strategy to win those bosses in the game. Your entire quest in Phantasy Star IV will take about 25-35 hours to beat. Phantasy Star IV's Storyline continues the tradition of the previous Phantasy Star's while adding some of it's own magic to the mix.
Storyline:10/10:The storyline in Phantasy Star IV is great. Every character is developed well and has their own pasts and secrets. Most of the dialogue in the game was written pretty well, but could be a little better admittedly. The game's plot starts cliche at first, but later on the game goes through many plot twists. Towards the end the game even manages to combine the previous three entires in the series with Phantasy Star IV's Storyline. Just as everything has been fantastic so far the Music is no exception as well.
Music:10/10:The music in Phantasy Star IV is great. Easily some of the best music in any Sega Genesis game ever. For sure hands down the best Genesis RPG soundtrack and I love every song in the game. Phantasy Star IV uses a variety of instruments for the songs and the songs were done extremely well. Overall, Phantasy Star IV is a extremely good RPG.
Overall:10/10:Phantasy Star IV is a amazing RPG. For sure one of my favorite RPG's of all time. Any serious RPG fans should give this game a try. It's fun, has a great soundtrack, extremely good Storyline and great characters. Also some of the best Graphics on the Sega Genesis for sure. You just can't go wrong with Phantasy Star IV.
