"Best. Sonic. Game. Ever."
Before Sonic, it was Alex Kidd. He starred in several platformers on the Sega Master System. They were actually pretty good. Fast forward to 1991, and Sega thought they needed a new mascot. They had several ideas, including a jack-rabbit, a Theodore Roosevelt-like person in pyjamas (that eventually became Sonic's nemesis Dr. Robotnik) and a blue hedgehog, the latter of which became Sonic and Sega's new mascot.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was the first game in the series to star Tails (aka Miles Prower). Tails can do anything Sonic could do, like collecting rings, speeding along at ridiculous speeds and flying through the levels. Together the supersonic duo have to defeat Dr. 'Eggman' Robotnik and save many animals that Robotnik planned to turn into robots in a project he called the Death Egg.
There are two acts in each zone: the second act puts you in a battle with Robotnik. There are many different settings and themes including a pinball and casino-style zone; a level at the centre of the Death Egg project; a zone in a cave and plenty more. Also included is a Special Stage, where you slide Sonic from left and right of the course (you don't actually turn yourself) and try to collect as many rings as possible.
The gameplay sees Sonic and his partner Tails race through different enviroments, collecting rings, spinning out enemies and soaring through loops. There are plenty of other moves: while flying along a speed, press Down and Sonic will spin like a cannonball until he hits the floor or something else. Power-ups are provided in the form of boxes, just spin jump them to get their contents.
The game boasts better graphics than the original. Although they look weak compared to the seventh generation, you've got to remember this is 16-bit technology. Not the best on the Mega Drive/Genesis, but they're still great.
Wonderful sound. The music varies from each stage, but is lovely and actually something you can listen to. Seriously, if you've been too busy speeding along to listen to the music, just open up a level and sit there, listening. Awesome.
Multiplayer is basically one player as Sonic and the other as Tails. However, instead of the playing the main adventure, you're actually competing against the other player, trying to get to the goal first, collecting the most rings and defeating the most enemies. Great fun.
+ Sonic is faster than before
+ Excellent graphics
+ Wonderful sound
+ Multiplayer? Wow!
- A bit frustrating at times
This is the best 2D Sonic game. It's faster than the original and not as dull as the third. Essential for all Sonic fans and Genesis owners.
