The Tick
Review by Flame060
"This is how comedy games should be done."
It is a great beat-em-up game, with the perfect touch of gags and laughs thrown in. But it is not too much to take the fun or challenge away to boot. In short, it's a great game, biased on a great cartoon from the 90's. If you have ever watched The Tick on Stations such as Fox Kids, or Telitoon, who both no longer air it sadly, you will be meeting up with lots of old friends. If your new to the whole shebang, don't worry, its still very enjoyable.
Basically, you play as The Tick, out on nightly patrols in The City, where tons on superheroes live to protect it, your just doing your thing when suddenly, NINJA, THOUSANDS OF THEM! Well, you must fight off these ninja, with punches and kicks. Doesn't sound that great eh? Well, you can always call out your friend Arthur, or perform a few combos on any bad guys. From tossing the silly, to slapping them silly, to even just flicking them with your index finger, it leaves in the greatness of the beat-me-ups and the greatness of The Tick. He even has his catchphrase in the game as well! You can also end up fighting some other superheroes if you end up falling into there territory. The Running Guy, The Chainsaw Vigilante, and a wide verity of other badly named people.
The graphics are not that bad, in fact, they're pretty smooth. A lot of comedic sprites are put in, for the quick laugh or two. Jump over a building like a ballerina, or wobble over a telephone wire. They do a good job of leaving the essence of the television series with the game. It brings back great memories. The sound, carries a lot of the original music from the show. There is not that many different sound effects or background music I'm sorry to say. But you hardly notice due to you'll be so much into the game to care. At least at first. The replay value is decent, as its quite hard to actually finish the game. Not that it's difficult gameplay wise, its that there isa lack of password or save features. So when you get game over, or turn of your system, you must start back over. It doesn't bug me that much, because the game is great. A highly looked over treasure.
In closing, I must say, this game is well worth over $10. And for Genesis games going from the free bin to five dollar racks across North America, its definitely worth picking up. In total, I give this game a solid 9/10 score. Just a loss of one point for the lack of saving or passwords. Quite possibly, this game falls into the 'must own' bucket. I recommend you making an effort to go out and find this baby. It brings me back nostalgic memories, and it has ninja, thousands of them, and they just kick ass. Serious ass too.
