Bee Item FAQ by Poochy.EXE (Poochy.Spambucket@gmail.com)
Version 1.04 (2013/03/18)
Each stage has 7 bee items, or 9 if you're on the Hidden Route. To reveal a bee item, hit it with the tip of your laser. If you're hitting one with your laser but not the tip of it, it will turn semi-visible. When this happens, you can switch to your shot and back to your laser to make the tip of your laser hit the bee and fully reveal it. You can also make them appear by using your laser to hit a nearby enemy, as long as your laser doesn't pierce through it.
Screenshots were taken in Practice Mode on the iOS version's Arcade Mode, but the bee locations are the same in both Smartphone and Arcade modes as well as other versions of the game.
In most modes, bee items are initially green when revealed, and change between green and yellow at fixed intervals, briefly flashing white in between. Any mode-specific differences are noted below. They have different effects depending on what color they are when you pick them up. Additionally, if you pick up all 7 or 9 bees in the level without dying from the start of the level until you pick up the final bee, you get a Bee Perfect bonus on the final bee, which doubles any score value awarded by the final bee. You can die after picking up the last bee without affecting any bee-related bonuses.
Arcade: Yellow bees give you a score bonus (detailed below), green ones boost your Hyper gauge and give you 100 points, and flashing white ones give you both the score bonus of a yellow bee and the Hyper gauge boost of a green bee. The Bee Perfect bonus doubles the final bee's score value and displays in a larger font. (Yes, if you pick it up while it's green, you'll get a gigantic "100PTS×2".)
The bonus for a yellow or flashing bee is displayed as "(base)PTS×(multiplier)", with a "×2" appended for a Bee Perfect bonus on the last bee.
- The base value is 20000 × PreviousBees × (2 ^ Perfect), where:
- PreviousBees is the number of bees you've picked up (regardless of color, and not counting this one) in the current level, unless this is the first bee, in which case use 0.5 instead of 0 in the formula.
- Perfect starts at 0, and each time you get the Bee Perfect bonus, this counter gets incremented by 1 at the end of the level. This counter is set to 1 at the start of the second loop.
- The multiplier starts at 2 for the first time you get the bonus and increases by 1 for every subsequent bonus. It resets to 2 every time you die and at the start of every level.
Smartphone Mode (iOS/Android): Yellow bees move your SM gauge towards S and green ones move it towards M. Picking up a bee while it's flashing white adds 150 to your counter (up to a cap of 1000).
Arrange A (Xbox 360): Bees are never green in this mode. They're always either yellow or flashing. They also flash the instant they are revealed. Each bee awards a score bonus, as follows:
The bonus depends on whether the bee was flashing or yellow. As in the arcade, the Bee Perfect bonus gives you a ×2 on the last bee, albeit without the larger font. The bonus is displayed as follows:
- Yellow, normal: "(combo)HIT×(base)PTS"
- Yellow, Bee Perfect: "(combo)HIT×(base)PTS×1×2"
- Flashing, normal: "(combo)HIT×(base)PTS×(multiplier)"
- Flashing, Bee Perfect: "(combo)HIT×(base)PTS×(multiplier)×2"
The values are displayed as follows:
- The combo value is whatever your combo is when you pick up the bee. Self-explanatory.
- The base value is (6 - Level) × (Color), where:
- Level is the current level number, from 1 to 5. (Yes, this means the level counter resets at the start of the second loop.)
- Color is 10000 if the bee was flashing, or 100 if it was yellow.
- The multiplier starts at 2 for the first time you pick up a flashing bee and increases by 1 for every subsequent flashing bee, resetting to 2 every time you die and at the start of every level.
Note that the first stage is unusual in that it has 10 total bee items, 3 of which are only obtainable on the Hidden Route and 1 of which is only obtainable on the Open Route. The others have 9 total, 2 of which are only obtainable on the Hidden Route.
Bee 1: Near the start of the level, on the very right, just under the bridge.
Bees 2 and 3: Shortly after the bee 1, bee 2 is on the left next to the first silo and bee 3 is on the right.
Bee 2 (bottom left, under the Bomb button) and bee 3 (right)
Bees 4 and 5 (Hidden Route only): After the midboss, bee 4 is on the very left next to the bottom silo in the cluster. Bee 5 is in the space between the cluster of 4 silos.
Bee 4 (bottom left) and bee 5 (top right)
Bee 6 (Hidden Route only): On the bridge immediately after bee 5.
Bee 7: Below the bridge, at the corner of the water. If you're on the Hidden Route, it'll come immediately after bee 6.
Bee 8: Above the bridge, immediately after bee 7.
Bee 9 (Open Route only): On the very right, next to the first of the houses with the red roofs.
Bee 10: On the very left at the end of the stage, right before the boss. By the time you reach it, you'll probably be hearing the klaxons warning you of the boss's arrival.
Bee 1: Near the start of the level, on the very left, just under the railway overpass.
Bee 2 (Hidden Route only): During the midboss, just to the right of where the bridge's support beam meets the water.
Bee 3 (Hidden Route only): After bee 2, once the screen stops scrolling to the right, this bee will be on the very right of the screen.
Bees 4~9: After the midboss, each of those 6 small Stonehenge-like structures have a bee in the middle.
Bee 4 (right) and bee 5 (left, under the Shot Off button)
Bee 6 (right) and bee 7 (top)
Bee 8 (left, under the Shot Off button) and bee 9 (right)
Bees 1 and 2: Near the start of the level, on the second bridge in the middle.
Bees 1 and 2
Bee 3: When the screen starts scrolling left, it will be between the first two rows of tanks. Just stay near the bottom left corner of the screen, firing your laser, and it should appear due to your laser hitting the nearby tanks.
Bee 4: Immediately after bee 3, the screen will stop scrolling sideways as a large gray turret reaches the center of the screen, then the screen will start scrolling downwards. The bee is on the gray turret.
Bee 5 (Hidden Route only): During the midboss, when the screen stops scrolling downwards and start scrolling to the left, it will be at the bottom of the screen in the midst of all the tanks.
Bee 6 (Hidden Route only): Immediately after bee 5, on the gray rectangular slab in the background.
Bee 7: Shortly after the midboss is a large enemy that takes up most of the width of the screen. Shoot its right side and you'll reveal the bee.
Bees 8 and 9: At the very end of the stage, right before the boss, both are in the middle of the screen. Just use your laser and you'll probably reveal both by hitting a nearby enemy.
Bees 8 and 9
Bee 1: Near the start of the level, on the very left just below the row of laser cannons.
Bees 2 and 3 (Hidden Route only): After the midboss, you'll see a rotating array of laser cannons. To its left is bee 2, and to its upper right, at the water's edge, is bee 3.
Bee 2 (left, to the left of the Hyper Counter button) and 3 (center)
Bees 4 and 5: After the large doors open, you'll drop down into a cave. At the end of your descent, there are two bees, one each in the bottom left and bottom right corners of the screen.
Bees 4 and 5
Bee 6: Shortly after bees 4 and 5, you'll encounter another spinning array of laser cannons. The bee is to its left, near the center of the screen.
Bees 7~9: Immediately after bee 6, you'll see a rocky outcrop on the very right of the screen. Bees 7, 8, and 9 are all in a row on this outcrop.
Bees 1 and 2 (Hidden Route only): After the first midboss, you should be scrolling downwards. At the end of your descent, bees 1 and 2 will be in the bottom corners of the screen, similar to bees 4 and 5 in stage 4.
Bee 1 (left, under the Hyper Counter button) and bee 2 (right)
Bee 3: After you enter the area with the green roads, the screen should start scrolling to the right. A ring of blue cannons will come in firing bullets followed by a ring of purple cannons firing lasers. The bee is near the top of the screen, at the top of the diagonal section of the green road. Shooting your laser will probably reveal it as you hit the cannons. (Note that the cannons are indestructable.)
Bee 4: Immediately after bee 3, another ring of purple cannons will swoop in from the right, followed by a ring of blue ones. When this happens, stay near the bottom right corner of the screen and you should reveal the bee by hitting the purple cannons nearby with your laser. More precisely, the bee is below and to the right of the T-shaped intersection in the green road.
Bee 5: After bee 4, the screen will start scrolling up and a third ring of purple cannons will come in from above, followed by a blue ring. The screen will then scroll left then down, as a fourth ring of purple cannons come in from the bottom left and moving upwards, then a fifth ring of purple cannons come in from the bottom right and move up as well. When you see the fifth ring, duck between any two cannons in the ring to get inside, then stay on the very right of the screen. The bee is inside the ring near the bottom.
Bees 6 and 7: After bee 5, the screen will scroll left then up, and start scrolling to the right, at which point you'll be assaulted with yet another two rings of cannons, one blue and one purple. When you see this, try to move to the bottom of the screen. Eventually the green road in the background will come to another T-shaped intersection. Bee 6 is below and to the left of it, and bee 7 is above the intersection. You can probably reveal these just by hitting the cannons with your laser, although for bee 6 you'll need to be near the bottom of the screen.
Bee 6 (bottom left) and 7 (center)
Bees 8 and 9: At the very end of the stage, right before the final boss, you should see two gray slabs, one on the left side of the screen and one on the right. Each of these hides a bee, similar to bee 6 in stage 3.
Bees 8 and 9
Thanks to CAVE for making the game, and also the DoDonPachi Dai-Fukkatsu official DVD and guidebook, which I relied heavily on to find the bees for the first time myself. Some information also came from CAVE's official YouTube videos.
