1. Introduction
================

Welcome one and all to my guide for Cause of Death!  I assume that many
of you reading this have read my Surviving High School guide, which is
made by the same team and has a pretty much identical format.  This is
a much more mature and adult game than Surviving High School, and just
for that alone I'm very excited about watching the storyline of this game
unfold.

For those of you who are new to this game format, the reason for a
walkthrough like this existing is because for almost every choice of action
you have in the game, there is a right and wrong choice, and making all of
the right choices (or most of the right choices in this particular game-
more on this later) gets you a bonus scene at the end.  By following the
steps in the order that I list here, you will get a perfect score and the
bonus scene.

This will be a spoiler-free walkthrough.  There will be no
discussion of plot unless necessary: a big part of the fun of the 
game is enjoying the surprises that the plot holds.  Also, unless 
I find myself with an enormous amount of free time on my hands 
(which is not going to happen considering I both go to graduate 
school and work a full-time job with lots of travel around the 
country), I will only be discussing the best choices for each 
scenario, and not what happens with the alternate choices you 
can make.  I will however be updating this every week with the 
new content, including the "previews."  All right, let's get going!

2. Differences from Surviving High School
==========================================

This game has a couple of pretty significant differences from Surviving
High School that are worth mentioning here.

1. There are no minigames (at least, not in any of the episodes so far).

2. This game literally counts your score as opposed to Surviving 
High School, which just counts how many right choices you've
made.  You can get up to 100 points for each episode or "chapter."
Following from that...

3. You do not need to get a perfect score in this game to get the bonus
scene.  Instead, you need to get a "Detective" rank, which you can get
by getting 80 out of 100 points in each chapter.  Rest assured that this
walkthrough will get you the full 100 points for each chapter.

4. There are a couple of differences in this guide as well.  There are a
number of times where there are choices you can make that have no
bearing on your final score.  In these cases, I've randomly written
one of the choices and put a star next to the choice to symbolize that
the choice doesn't matter; keep in mind that I could be wrong here and
that some of the starred choices actually do matter, so if you're
concerned about getting a perfect score, know that the choices I wrote
down were the ones I chose when I got a perfect score.

There will also occasionally be points in the game where you 
can choose many different options that add to story and 
character development, but don't count towards your final
score.  In these cases, I haven't written out every single choice you
can make, but instead describe that you can (and should) 
choose all of the options.  All right, let's begin!

Well, this is certainly a change of pace.  This isn't a perfect
score kind of scenario, although there are certainly good and bad ways
of resolving the case.  After having a chance to play through this scenario
again, I've updated the walkthrough with what seem to be the optimal paths
for each of the three different skills that you can focus on as a cop:
observation, street skills, and instinct.  Thanks to Greetz Khan and 
a reader for their contributions to these paths.  You'll notice that many
of the steps stay the same throughout all of the paths; only some of the
situations in the scenario have multiple correct choices.

A couple of notes that apply to all paths.  Steps 1 through 4 are
entirely your choice.  Step 15 has a situation where you need to not
choose anything and instead let the timer run out (this is actually
not true for Observation, but is for the other two paths).

All right, the second part of something I've been wanting to see for a
long time; an SHS/COD crossover!  For those of you who play SHS reading
this guide for the first time, I hope you stick around for a while; COD
is a really excellent game.  The only note for this one is the final step,
where you have to choose Run four times in rapid succession, so I figured
it would be easier to combine them all into one step.

terms of what the right choice is.  So you have to pay attention to
what direction Mal says to go; it's either left, straight, or right.

starred the choice, meaning that it didn't matter what you chose, but
that was incorrect; you do have to choose "Yourself" to get a perfect
score.

Step 14, steps 15 and 16 don't happen.  Finally, in Step 24, the sound I
mentioned earlier doesn't happen, but you fail the scenario if you make
the other choice.

pay attention to what it says the guard is doing; if he looks in your
direction, do nothing; if he looks away, then run for it.  In both 
times I played this episode, he looked in my direction the first two
times, then looked away the third time.  For Step 25, the last step,
make sure to not choose either option; I've highlighted that by writing
Nothing for that step.  Finally, in Step 13, I actually chose to
do neither option when I got 100%, but I made a choice the first time
I played the episode, and it didn't make any sound, so I assume it
doesn't matter what you choose; please let me know if that's not the case.

Thanks to Darryl for letting me know about the final step technically not
mattering.  You will get a perfect score regardless of what you choose,
but the best choice is definitely to let the timer run out.  Thanks to
Anna for clarifying this for me as well.  In other words, choosing either
of the options in the last step will still get you a perfect score, but
they have to be considered alternate endings, and the correct ending is
to let the timer run out.

Also, here's a great tip from Ali S:

"For Step 9, the switchblade is the correct answer ONLY if for Step 3 you
chose "turn back".  If, though, you choose to keep talking (which you could,
it doesn't factor into your detective score), you would get hit on the head
with a blunt object.  Before Step 9, Kai asks you to identify the blunt
object that could have been used, and the correct answer is Cudgel."

So just to summarize, if you choose Turn back in Step 3,
choose Switchblade for Step 9.  If you choose Keep talking in Step 3, choose
Cudgel for Step 9.

"I don't know" will increase your detective score, the correct
choice is actually "3 fingers" which increases your final score by
5 more points than "I don't know" does.  Very, very tricky.  The
only real note for this one is in Step 13, and it's just to be
very careful when choosing "Inject!" since there are a ton of choices
and a very fast timer.
