"Dragon breeding... should be fun right?"
Introduction - Dragonvale is a sort of Farmville type game where you can raise and breed your own dragons on magical floating islands but with the added element of accelerating the game with real money. There is a vast amount of different dragons and decorations for your islands to keep yourself busy on that long bus ride to work or school.
Gameplay - Generally the game requires very little knowledge to get a grasp of. You start off with hatching your very first egg and waiting for it to hatch. When it's done incubating, you are able to place it into a dragon habitat and feed it "Treats" to grow and level up your dragon. Of course the fun part is to breed different dragons together to achieve different combinations and to hopefully get one of the rare dragons! But from what I found, this can get very tedious and annoying if you have bad luck and have been trying for weeks for the elusive Rainbow dragon. There is also the option to have your dragons compete in the Colosseum in later levels for prizes, but there is no effort on your part as it's just a waiting game to see what the result is.
Story - There isn't really much of a story in this game, but the game does offer "Goals" as a way to point you in the right direction of progressing your islands. These are basically achievements but grant you DragonCash (the in game currency) and experience upon successful completion.
Graphics/Sound - This game makes the best out of the beautiful Retina Display of the iPhone 4. Graphics are clean and sharp with no pixelation effects that you find on some older games for iPhone/iPod. The music on the other hand is very lacking. There is only one track that plays when you play the game, which gets very repetitive and boring after a week or so. There's little sound effects for various actions that you do such as feeding dragons and collecting from habitats, but if you choose to play without sound you won't be missing out on much.
Play Time/Replayability - The play time is extremely long depending on your luck and how much of a perfectionist you are in games. It takes a very long time to breed and collect all the different types of dragons, so depending on your patience, it could be a nice quick game to play when you're bored from time to time.
Final Recommendation - Overall it's a fun little game to play and doesn't require a large amount of time investment due to the nature of waiting for eggs to hatch and such. I would recommend it if you are looking for a game to keep you busy on your phone and enjoy games that take real time to progress with minimal effort.
