Description

WELCOME!Welcome to the fascinating world of Art Letterman, perhaps better known as the Private "i". By day, Mr. Letterman holds a boring job of a clerk at a local D.A. office, but by night he becomes the world’s most famous Word Detective, unraveling the mysteries hidden in seemingly stochastic word combinations. To sharpen his amazing skills, Mr. Letterman engages in a few select word puzzles. Here is one of his favorites, a puzzle he invented while investigating the famous “Case of Five Missing Letters,” when solving a similar riddle helped the Detective save humanity from a World War III type disaster, and certainly keep the Royal Family from a richly major embarrassment as well.HOW TO PLAY THE GAMEYou have only ten guesses to uncover a mystery word. For every guess you will receive a clue: a number of correct letters and a number of them in correct positions. For instance:Mystery word: SUPER Guess: DORESClue: 3/1 (Three letters are matching: R,E,S and one of them is in the right position: E).Mystery word: GREAT Guess: TREAD Clue: 4/3 (Three letters are matching: R,E,A,T and three of them are in the right position: R, E, A).All mystery words are guaranteed to contain unique sets of letters, however you can use as many identical letters as you wish in your guess:Mystery word: BLAST Guess: BBBBB Clue: 5/1 (Five letters are matching: all B's and one is in the right position: the first). Indeed, using identical letters is an easy way to find out whether letters are present in the mystery word:Mystery word: PROSA Guess: PPPRR Clue: 3/1 (Obviously P is present). In addition, you can decide to leave some blanks (or enter non-character symbols). It is perfectly legal, but do not expect them to match any character in the mystery word.Do not be discouraged if your guess brings you a “0/0” clue. In this case, you are certain that none of the letters in your guess are present in the mystery word. To make this fact more obvious, the letters will be grayed out on the display. BOARD FEATURESYou can restart your game at any time by pressing the REFRESH button on the bottom of your screen. Look up your personal achievements by pressing the STAR button.Change the game’s settings by pressing the GEAR button.Once the game is finished, you can press the “Def.” button to look up the definition of your mystery word.AWARDSIn discussions with Mr. Letterman, we came up with three levels for the Letterman Awards. You will receive the Letterman Commended title after 10 wins, the Letterman Finalist title after 20 wins, and the Letterman Apprentice title after 50 wins. Each title bears a Star of Recognition with a special color. You can look up your achievements by pressing the STAR button. Once you receive a title, your win will be accompanied by displaying the Five Stars of your title’s dedicated color. FINAL WORDPlease note that Word Detective is a challenging game that requires strong deductive reasoning, infallible memory, impeccable intuition, and (of course) some luck to win. Even Mr. Letterman himself loses a game or two occasionally! Do not despair if you lost a first few rounds – try different strategies, learn from your mistakes, improve your vocabulary, and in no time you will master the game to be ready to become an apprentice of the best Word Detective of all time, Mr. Art Letterman. ENJOY THE GAME!
