"Excellent game! Easily one of the best the Jaguar has to offer!"
Well well well. Looks like Jeff Minter's update to the classic Tempest is now available. Most of you are probably wondering, "How good is it?" Well my friends, this is an excellent piece of software and easily one of the Jaguar's best. From the pumping techno soundtrack to the trippy bonus levels this game does not disappoint. Tempest 2000 has four modes of play. They are:
TRADITIONAL-Like the name implies, this is as basic as Tempest gets. A good place for beginners to start, or if you want to take a break from Tempest 2000.
TEMPEST PLUS-This version adds new effects and allows you to practice with the A.I. droid.
TEMPEST 2000-The reason to own this cart, Tempest 2000 will challenge your reflexes like no other game. Beat all 100 levels to get Beastly Mode. Beastly Mode is near, if not impossible.
TEMPEST DUEL-Two player at its best. In this mode you have a mirror and the object is to shoot the other player (he has a mirror too). The catch? When you are firing, your miror dissapears for a split-second, leaving you temporarily vulnerable.
The thing I didn't like was that your progress is only saved after you get past the 17th level and on each odd level after that. Another problem is the steep learning curve. But these are small complaints, I must admit. It goes from easy to hard right when you're getting into it. Nice things are the 3 bonus levels. They are totally original and make the game more fun than it already is. And I don't have to mention the soundtrack, which is on par with the big boys. In fact, I would go so far as to say that this is some of the best music you will ever hear. The control is also top notch (with a rotary controller, that is). So if you're a Jaguar owner who doesn't have this game, what are you waiting for? Go out and buy this now!
