    1. GENERAL INFORMATION

    This is the text version of the the Diablo 2 guide (a HTML will be made available once the 
    text verson is finsihed) made by Tim Wuyts.  
    
    The author is the webmaster of  The Cheat Empire (http://home.planetinternet.be/~twuyts), 
    where you can find the latest cheats & walkthroughs for PC Games. Including the latest 
    version of this guide.
    
    Since Diablo 2 is an extensive game, don't expect that the first versions of this guide will 
    cover every little detail about the game.  Hell, I even think I could be updating this guide 
    5 years from now.  Any additional information is always welcome, so if you find a unique 
    item, shrine, ... I haven't mentioned yet: just let me know and I'll make the proper 
    adjustments.  The first versions of the guide will contain more info on the Paladin than on 
    other characters, this is because I started playin with the Paladin and thus have more 
    information about him.

      1.3 Introduction
      ----------------
    
    Nobody will argue with me that a lot of people were waiting for the release of this game.  
    And yes ... finally the programmers at Blizzard blessed us with the arrival of their new 
    baby, Diablo 2 - their way of making earth a little bit more like heaven.  Everybody, 
    including me, was eager to get their hands on a copy of D2 once it hit the stores.
    
    The first question that comes to mind is whether D2 lives up to the expectations.  At first I 
    must admit that I found the 640x480 resolution rather dissapointing, but after a while you 
    hardly even notice it any more.  The gameplay causes you to forget the graphics (not that 
    they are terrible, but a higher resolution would have been nice - but I guess that's 
    something for Diablo 3) and sucks you completely into the game.  This is rather strange, 
    since it's merely a hack & slash game come to think of it.  This proves that good games don't 
    need to be complicated.
    
    Overall the game does live up to it's expectations, making this a game you'll grab back to 
    for a long period of time.

    The amazon is the female fighter in the game.  Instead of relying on melee combat, she 
    prefers to use ranged weapons like bows, crossbows, ...  This however doesn't mean that she 
    can't give our little monsters a good spanking from closer range.  Here are the starting

    The paladin is a good overall character.  He can stand his ground when it comes to melee

         2.4.1 Skills

    The skills of a paladin can be divided into 3 types: combat skills, Defensive Auras and 
    Offensive Auras.  The auras are very usefull when you are playing in parties (eg. 
    multiplayer), since they affect all members in your party which are in range.  This gives 
    them the same bonuses you get.
    
    A general tip I can give you (since I've been playing with the Paladin for quite some time 
    now) is not to spend too much skill points in the skills made available to you in the early 
    stages of character development.  Take "might" for example: I used to develop this skill a 
    lot in the beginning of the game - hell, who doesn't want to do xx% additional damage.  
    However, later in the game the conviction skill became available and it soon became clear 
    that by developing this skill you could develop your damage increase even faster, easily 
    surpassing the level of might.  It's better to save those precious skill points until 
    conviction becomes available than it is to spend them all on might in the early stages.  Off 
    course, this is only a suggestion.

    Our little female user of elementals is pretty frail.  Her spells allow her to destroy 
    enemies from afar.  A good and balanced choice of skills are important when you are playing 
    with this character.  Just keep in mind that: Fire spells exist to do extensive damage, 
    Lightning spells exist to attack multiple targets, Cold Spells facilitate combat (because of 
    the freeze effect).  These are general rules, eg. I never said that cold/lightning spells 
    can't do extensive damage.  Anyway, her stats are:

    Let me start off by saying that the attack speeds are not correct for all characters. In the 
    beginning I was playing with the Paladin, later on with the Sorceress, ... so frankly, I 
    don't remember which items have the attack speed of which character.  I hope I can find a way 
    to correct this negligence of me.

      3.2 Socketed Items
      ------------------
    
    Socketed items are exactly the same as normal items, but with sockets in them.  This allows 
    you to insert gems or skulls in order to add magical properties to your items.  There are 5 
    grades of gems: chipped, flawed, standard, flawless and perfect.  Needless to say, the 
    perfect gems have the greatest magical effect of all.  You have to keep in mind that once you 
    inserted a gem, it can't be removed out of the weapon, shield or helmet.  Here's an overview 
    of the different type of gems:

    He welcomes you in Act II and is the owner of the demon infested palace (mmm, what a 
    spoiler).  You'll talk to him from time to time and he also burden you with the cleansing of

    Kaelen he just guards the palace entrance until Jerhyn grants you permission to enter.

    Not much to say about this character (I also didn't visit him very much) but he:

    is just an overview of where you can obtain certain special items in order to complete  the 
    quest.
    
    One important thing to remember in diablo 2 is that corners are your friends.  Some of the 
    characters get stuck behind corners (esp. if they use ranged weapons).  Only now and then one 
    of the monsters turns around the corner, which obviously makes an easy kill.  Also keep in 
    mind that the AI is scripted to follow a parallel path with you.  This means that if a 
    monster is in a building, you have to walk past (or nearby) to the exit in order for it to 
    exit the building.  This doesn't always work, if the door is on the wall closest to you, 
    monsters tend to escape easier.  This doesn't work with monsters that use a hit and run 
    tactic (like the flayers in act 3), I'm taling about the bigger monsters here like venom 
    lords or the damned.
    
    Also try to avoid getting surrounded.  This can be deadly, even with the Paladin's Zeal 
    attack.
    
    
      7.1 Act I: The Western Kingdoms
      -------------------------------
    
         7.1.1 Den of Evil
         ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    
    Goal   : Clear the Den of Evil
    Reward : Skill Point
    
    This first mission is given by Akara in the camp.  First you have to find the Den, which 
    usually isn't too far off the camp.  Once you find it: kill all the monsters inside (color of 
    the cave will change when quest is completed) and head back to Akara.  She will grant you a 
    skill of choice.
    
    
         7.1.2 Sisters' Burial Ground
         ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    
    Goal   : Kill Blood Raven
    Reward : Mercenary
    
    Kashya asks you to look for Blood Raven in the Burial Grounds (next to the Cold Plains) and 
    kill her.  Blood Raven is a corrupted Rogue who raises the dead.
    
    Once you arrive at the Burial Ground, stay at a distance and lure all the undead creatures 
    (skeletons & zombies) away from her.  Once they are dead, you can start your hunt for Blood 
    Raven.  Once she is finished, head back to Kashya and she will give you a rogue which 
    accompanies you in your future quests.
    
    
         7.1.3 The Search for Cain
         ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    
    Goal   : Find Cain
    Reward : Cain - Identifies Items for free, Akara - Item
    
    The search for Cain (a mission given to you by Akara) is a more complex mission than the 
    previous two.  You'll have to do a series of things before you can reach Tristram, where Cain 
    is being held captive.
    
    First you have to reach Dark Wood (through the Underground Passage) and search for the Tree 
    of Inifuss to recover a scroll.  Once you have the scroll of Inifuss, take it to Akara to 
    interpret it.  Once Akara has interpreted the scroll, read it yourself and head for the Cairn 
    Stones (you must have passed it by now - it looks a bit like Stonehenge).  Press the 
    monolith's in the correct order and a portal to Tristram will be opened.
    
    Tristram is a though town at first, but with a bit of running and good tactics it shouldn't 
    be that hard.  The only character to whatch out for is Griswold, the old Blacksmith of 
    Tristram.  He takes little damage and does have a nasty punch.  Once he's out of the picture 
    the way to Deckard Cain is free.  He's hanging in a gibbet in the middle of town.  He'll 
    escape through a town portal once you set him free.
    
    Now head back to the rogue encampment and talk to Akara, she will give you an item as a 
    reward (a ring in my case).  Then talk to Cain, he'll grant you free ID of items for the rest 
    of the game.
    
    Note: You can also find Wirt's leg in Tristram - which you need in order to open the secret 
    Cow level
    
    
         7.1.4 The Forgotten Tower
         ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    
    Goal   : Kill the Countess
    Reward : Items dropped by the Countess (+chests)
    
    This quest is activated once you read the Moldy Tome, which tells the tale of a bloodthirsty 
    Countess.  You have got to find the Forgotten Tower in the Black Marsh (beyond Dark Wood) and 
    kill the Countess.  Once you find it, descent in the cellars below the ruins of the Tower.  
    On level 5 you'll find the Countess, she is not so hard to defeat.  All you have to do is 
    lure the minions out of her chamber first then go in and take her out as fast as possible (I 
    said she isn't hard to defeat, but she can be harmful).
    
    Once she's dead, the chests in her chambers will offer you a bunch of magical items and loads 
    of gold.
    
    
         7.1.5 Tools of the Trade
         ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    
    Goal   : Find the Horadric Malus
    Reward : Charsi will imbue an item with magical properties
    
    Just past the Outer Cloister lie the Barracks.  In here you'll encounter the smith.  He's 
    strong, but ranged fighters should't fear him.  If you are a melee fighter, I suggest hit & 
    run tactics or you'll be squished like a bug.  In the room the smith came out of lies the 
    Horadric Malus.  This also means that you don't have to kill the smith in order to obtain it, 
    so if you can't beat him (or simply don't want to fight him) just run in-and-out of the room 
    (eeeuhm, don't forget to pick up the Horadric Malus off course).
    
    When you head back to Charsi, she'll imbue an item for you.  This doesn't have to be done 
    immediatly, you can even travel back from other acts with items to let her imbue them.  Just 
    make sure you pick a good item (something you can use, with some power).
    
    
         7.1.6 Sisters to the Slaughter
         ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    
    Goal   : Destroy Andariel
    Reward : Items left behind
    
    The first time I met Andariel, I was afraid that she would kick my butt, but frankly, she's 
    quite easy to defeat with any character.  If possible, try to use a weapon that does fire 
    damage, since she's pretty vulnerable to fire.  If you are a playing with the sorceress 
    however, DON'T use fire - Andariel is fast and her poison attack can be quite lethal for a 
    sorceress.  Try to use a spell like Ice Blast, that way Andariel slows down a lot and you 
    still do a lot of damage.
    
    Once she is defeated, pick up the items (don't forget the main chamber she came out of!).  
    Then head back to the village, talk to everyone, do what you have to do and head east to Lut 
    Gholein.
    
    
      7.2 Act II: The Great Deserts of Aranoch
      ----------------------------------------
    
         7.2.1 Radament's Lair
         ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    
    Goal   : Kill the monster in the city sewers (Radament)
    Reward : Discount from the merchants in Lut Gholein
    
    This is your first mission in Lut Gholein and it is given to you by Atma, the tavernkeeper.  
    She wants you to kill the Horadric mummy Radament.  Once she has given the mission, just head 
    into the sewers for some hack & slash.  You'll find Radament in the lowest level of the 
    sewers.
    
    Once you defeated him, pick up all the items he left behind.  Also make sure you don't forget 
    the Horadric Scroll (in the chest).  Head back to Lut Gholein and talk to Atma.
    
    
    
         7.2.2 The Horadric Staff
         ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    
    Goal   : Find all the pieces to create the Horadric Staff
    Reward : -
    
    After you've picked up the Horadric Scroll in Radament's Lair, this mission will be 
    activated.  First show the scroll to Cain, he'll explain the mission to you.  Your objectives 
    are to reconstruct a Horadric Staff by:
     * Retrieving a Horadric Cube (Halls of the Dead - Under Dry Hills)
     * Retrieving a Shaft (Maggot Lair - Under the Oasis)
     * Retrieving a Headpiece (Claw Viper Temple)
    
    Once you retrieve all of them, you can combine the shaft and the headpiece with the Horadric 
    Cube, so that a Horadric Staff will be formed.  All you have to do now is find Tal Rasha's 
    Tomb and place the Staff in the Orifice.
    
    
         7.2.3 Tainted Sun
         ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    
    Goal   : Lift the shadow of darkness by destroying the Tainted Sun Altar
    Reward : -
    
    Destroy the Altar in the Claw Viper Temple (is also needed in order to obtain the Horadric 
    Headpiece).
    
    
         7.2.4 Arcane Sanctuary
         ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    
    Goal   : Find Horazon's Journal
    Reward : -
    
    After you've talked to Cain (after the completion of the Horadric Staff).  Go and talk to 
    Drognan, who will tell you about a place called the Arcane Sanctuary.  He will also order you 
    to talk to Jerhyn.  Once you talked to Jerhyn, you'll have access to the Palace so that you 
    can reach the Sanctuary.  In order to reach it you have to walk into the portal which is 
    located in the Palace cellars.
    
    In the sanctuary all you have to do is find the Journal, but beware: it is guarded by the 
    Summoner.
    
    
         7.2.5 The Summoner
         ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    
    Goal   : Destroy the Summoner in the Arcane Sanctuary
    Reward : -
    
    This mission is activated once you encounter The Summoner.  He's like the "main man" in the 
    Arcane Sanctuary.  You have to defeat him in order to read Horazon's Journal.
    
    
         7.2.6 The Seven Tombs
         ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    
    Goal   : Find the tomb of Tal Rasha
    Reward : 
    
    After you've spoken to Jerhyn (Atma will tell you to do so after the first mission), go talk 
    to Drognan for more specific details about this mission.  In short you have to find the Tal 
    Rasha's symbol, so that you enter the right tomb.  The symbol can be found in the Arcana 
    Sanctuary, but since this mission is only available at the end of Act II, you can't complete 
    this mission in the beginning in of the game (I wonder why Blizzard put the beginning of this 
    mission so early in Act II).
    
    Once you have read Horazon's Journal in the Arcana Sanctuary, you also know which symbol is 
    that of Tal Rasha.  All you have to do now is find the correct temple in the Canyon of the 
    Magi (look at the symbols outside the temples).
    
    In the tomb you have to open a secret passage by placing the Horadric Staff into the Orifice.  
    Now it's time to gear up, inside you'll find Duriel, one of the lesser Evils.  He's much 
    harder to defeat than Andariel.  You shouldn't have too much trouble if you're a well 
    equipped melee fighter with some nice stock of health potions.  Magic users don't have it 
    easy against him, you're confined to a small room (which you can flee if you want too).  Once 
    Duriel is defeated, search the tomb, you'll meet Tyrael, the Archangel.
    
    
    
      7.3 Act III: Kehjistan and Kurast
      ---------------------------------
    
         7.3.1 The Golden Bird
         ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    
    Goal   : -
    Reward : Potion of Life
    
    I think the boys at Blizzard where kinda out of ideas when they came up with this mission: it 
    has nothing to do with the story line, nor does anyone give you this mission.  All you have 
    to do is retrieve "A Jade Figurine" when you are battling your way through the jungle.  Once 
    you have it head back to the camp and talk to Cain.  He'll tell you to talk to Meshif, who 
    will give you a Golden Bird in return.
    
    Ask Cain about the Golden Bird and he'll send you to Alkor, the Alchemist.  Talk to him twice 
    and you have the potion of Life.  All you have to do now is drink it!
    
    
         7.3.2 Blade of the Old Religion
         ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    
    Goal   : Find the Blade to restore the magical barrier around the town
    Reward : Rare ring/amulet
    
    This mission is given to you by Hratli once he's back in his forge (back from greeting you at 
    the docks).  He wants you to find a special dagger called the Gidbinn in order to re-enforce 
    the protective barrier around the docks.
    
    You'll find the dagger in a village of the Fetish (the only village actually, the rest are 
    all ruins, so you can't really miss it).  Just hit the special altar (watch out, a bunch of 
    Fetish dudes will suddenly attack you in the back).  Once you killed the unique Fetish that 
    attacks you, he'll drop the Gibdinn.
    
    Now return the Gibdinn to Ormus, he'll give you a rare ring/amulet in return.
    
    
         7.3.3 Khalim's Will
         ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    
    Goal   : Find the eye, heart, brains and flail of Khalim
    Reward : -
    
    Cain will tell you that in order to defeat Mephisto, you need to destroy a special orb.  In 
    order to do so, you need a special flail (transmuted with the Horadric Cube).  You need to 
    collect the Brain, Eye, Hearth and Flail of Khalim, a former High Priest of the Zakarum.
    
    You can find the Eye in the Spiders Cave, the brain in the Flayer Dungeon, the hearth in the 
    sewers under Kurast Bazaar and the Flail ...
    
    
    
         7.3.4 Lam's Esen's Tome

         7.4.1 The Fallen Angel

    Goal   : Free the spirit of Izual
    Reward : 2 Skill points
    
    Tyrael will give you a mission to release the tormented spirit of a fallen angel called 
    Izual.  You can find him in the Plains of Despair and he's usually surrounded by quite a lot 
    of monsters.  The first thing to do is to lure the lesser monsters away, so you can finish 
    them off.  Then deal with Izual ... he shouldn't pose a big problem without his minions 
    surrounding him.
    
    After you kill him, go and have a talk wity Tyrael again ... he will grant you 2 skill points 
    for you to distribute.
    
    
         7.4.2 Hell's Forge
         ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    
    Goal   : Destroy Mephisto's Soul stone
    Reward : -
    
    You already should have gotten the soul stone at the end of Act 3 (when you destroyed 
    Mephisto).
    
    You also need the hell forge hammer.  You can get it by defeating the hell smith (Hephasto).  
    He's pretty strong, do don't hesitate to take a run if you are low on health.  Once he's 
    defeated, all you have to do is pick it up.
    
    If you have the above items, you still need to reach the forge.  It's somewhere in the river 
    of flames.  Usually the forge isn't to far of the place where you killed the smith (makes 
    sense, doesn't it).
    
    Once you've found it all you have to do is: place the soulstone on it, equip yourself with 
    the hammer and hit the forge.
    
    
         7.4.3 Terror's End
         ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    
    Goal   : Destroy Diablo himself
    Reward : -
    
    Fight your way through the river of flame to his sanctuary.  Once you enter it, make sure you 
    never get surrounded by a bunch of demons or they will walk right over you sooner or later.
    
    In the sanctuary you have to activate the seals Hadriel spoke about.  But be careful, once 
    you activate a seal a large amount of monsters usually appears right behind you.  It's 
    important that you make sure you can take on a large amount of monsters or that you plan a 
    pre-emptive escape route (read town portal).
    
    Once the seals are all activated the lord of terror appears with a little rumble.  In 
    comparison to Diablo I, our main mean boss IS dangerous (and huge too for that matter).  He 
    is hard to hit, can take large amounts of damage and his spells can do some serious damage 
    (in my case the chain lighting did high amounts of damage).  I employed a hit and run tactic, 
    but even then you'll end up buying a lot of potions in the town.  The best way to deal with 
    diablo is to walk in circles around him, that way his lightning will always miss you.  Also, 
    once you hit him don't run away from him in a straight line.  This could get you caught in 
    his lightning, usually resulting in dead.  If your character has a good dexterity rating, try 
    to hit him from a distance.  Once you destroyed diablo, you have 90 seconds to gather items 
    he might have dropped and then enjoy the epilogue.
    
    You will be granted a title once you defeated Diablo.
