Barrack
Review by Vidgmchtr
"A great Arcade game for Macintosh!"
Barrack is an Arcade game for the Apple Macintosh. It was made by Ambrosia in mid 1996. It is a Shareware game, meaning that sooner or later, you should register the copy you have downloaded from the Internet. The fee is a meager 15 bucks, but that's a small price to pay for such a highly addictive game!
Gameplay: 10/10
You control a shooter, which is about the length of your thumbnail. The objective of each level is to isolate a group of enemy balls. There are also some friendly balls that you can take advantage of to get more points.
Also, watch out for Bosco, the shark with an attitude. You must get at least 80% of the playing field covered to pass the level. If you get more, you can get an over-achiever bonus.
Enemy Balls:
Pawn Balls: These are your basic enemies. They appear in almost every level. You must isolate them.
Ooze Balls: These green nasties are actually bombs set to explode if not isolated in time. If they do explode, get ready for a bunch of pawn balls being sent your way.
Sentry Balls: These are Eyeballs that get in the way of your shooter. Laser cannons are the best way to go if one of these appear in the level.
Friendly Balls:
Fruit Balls: These balls go very slowly, and when they bounce off other balls, they start slowing down, too.
Glass Balls: These balls are obviously made of glass.
They can withstand 3 hits of your shooter, and 3 hits of collision with another glass ball. They're very useful if you want a big over-achiever Bonus.
Nuke Balls: These are also bombs, but you can control them. Isolate them with some unwanted balls, and when in a very tight space, they detonate, destroying every ball in the small area. Fun!
Yummies: These are power ups for your shooter.
Laser Cannons: These help your shooter go really fast, perfect for the higher levels.
Cluster Magnets: These can attract many pawn balls toward the wall and disrupt the sentry balls vision. They're useless if you shoot in the direction of the magnets.
Lightning bolts: These can help your regular shooter go faster.
Keys: They give you between 1 and 5 extra lives.
Graphics: 10/10
The background art is Stunning. Also, the pictures are nice, and the balls and your shooter are well made.
Audio/Music: 7/10
Even though there's only 1 background song, it's a really great song. Plus, the sound effects and Bosco are well done, too.
Replayability: 9/10
Warning: Highly Addictive.
Download? Register?
Well, if you can tolerate the notice when the game starts up, you won't have to. But, 15 dollars isn't a lot of money nowadays, so, register if you can. I'd also say to give it a download. It's a great Mac game.
