Apeiron
Review by MI4 REAL
"Hooah! Ambrosia with another souped-up classic remake!"
Apeiron. Supposedly pronounced ''Appear-on'' according to some forgotten source, is another Ambrosia Software remake on a classic, this time Centipede. Now I haven't played the classic version of Centipede, but i have to say, this game is pretty good. It's got the usual Ambrosia-style humor and $15 shareware fee, just like most of the others do. This is just one of several games that has made Ambrosia one of my favorite companies.
Gameplay-7
It's likely to get boring after many waves of play, but the humor and go-power of this game should carry you along for quite a while. It's pretty straightfoward. Shoot the Pentipede before he gets to the bottom, if he does, you're toast, simple as that.
You have to worry about a couple of other enemies, too. A scorpion that tends to get in the way (but eats the mushrooms) and a flea that likes to drop mushrooms. Do note the more mushrooms the faster the Pentipede gets to the bottom.
You got a few power ups to help you. A weaving item to get some normally impossible shots off through the mushroom patch, the legendary Sprinkly Shield that grants invulnerability to you for a limited time only. (Get yours while supplies last!) And the Yummie Lock to keep all your items should you do something that results in your crystal being shattered. The last 2 items you can get is a machine gun powerup, and an item that allows you to go through the mushrooms on your side of the field. Now, with all this in mind, go play the game!
Sound-9
The sound and music is one of my favorite features of any Ambrosia game. Be sure to turn the speakers up loud when you play.
Control-10
Basic control. Limited movement and the ability to fire energy from the crystal is all you do. The rest is up to you.
Graphics-7
It's a pretty flat layout, but you can see a little 3D was used in the graphics, especially at the Game Over Screen. Besides that, nothing really noteworthy.
Playability-9
The only thing that can constitute a threat as far as cleanliness goes is the fact that the Game Over screen, the Pentipede takes a puff of something. Nothing I would go bonkers over, kids or no kids. Kids can play too, as there really isn't much to this game.
Replay Value-5
The humor and effort on this Centipede remake hold it up in this category, but seeing as all you do is go wave after wave after wave of blasting the Pentipede and his buddies, you can see how replay value lacks.
So, worth buying, not worth the shareware fee, or trash?
I'm not so sure that $15 is worth the shareware fee for this game, though i'd register for about $10.
