If you stand in one place for two long, the screen says, “What are you waiting
for!”

Heart points are in the top-right corner of the screen. These valentine’s day
tributes are your health gauges. Try not to run out of hearts. When you are
slain, you will be teleported back to the front of your house.

II. Enemy Hints

Rento: Battle begins! I can hit the enemy automatically by walking straight at
it. The number above the monster tells me how much damage I do. I will be
hit if I stand still or turn my back on the enemy… I can flee the battle by
heading for the top right-hand corner of the screen, but I will probably lose
some stamina at the same time I do so!

Upon touching/being touched by an enemy, you are sent to a tiny battle arena.
It is always the same—a small, grassy field, even if you are in a cave when
you engage in battle with a monster.

Enemies, although they look alone when not on the battlefield, usually are in
groups of at least two, so watch out.

The more sword techniques you learn, the more damage you can do to your
enemies.

If you defeat all the enemies in the battlefield, you will heal by 2 heart
points.

Enemies do not have to touch you to harm you if your back is turned.

All enemies are generally the same, no matter their appearance. They aren’t
generally stronger than one another.

III. Characters

Rento –
Your main character, Rento is an ugly, smirky dude with blue hair.
He’s out to save his sister, who was taken by Pegasus rider.
Sister –
The sister of Rento, stolen in the night by Pegasus Rider.
Pegasus Rider -
A knight who stole your sister away during the night. (Pun!)
Worried Mother –
A mother who’s child went off to play and never came back.
Blacksmith –
	A cranky old Blacksmith.
Finbarr –
A man who lives in a cave. He tells you the legend of Devin.
Codar –
Another man who lives in a cave. He teaches you an ancient fighting
technique.
Mendo –
A sick man with a cool hammer.
Wise Old Man –
A man, who is old, and who is wise. He doesn’t believe the legend of
Devin, and needs your help to break the seal of the Gate.
Desperate Woman –
The Desperate Woman’s greatest dream is that of marriage. However,
the only eligible bachelor in town seems to be the cranky Blacksmith. What’s
a girl to do?
Devin –
A demon that was sealed away a long time ago?
Mira the Healer –
Mira the Healer lives to the immediate east of the village. She will
heal you, but not if your “soul is black”—meaning not if you have scared
away anybody with your sword, so resist the urge to poke!

IV. Walkthrough

Rento: Maybe some of my fellow villagers know something about my sister?
I have a map that I can use by pressing ‘#’. It will be very helpful as I
navigate through the valley.

Begin by, as your character suggests, talking to the pathetic villagers of the
town. The blacksmith will tell you to go south and use the ladders to climb
underground, and to question the man there to discover the real legend of the
valley.

Talk to all of the villagers, then head south from the two kids. Go a little
west to see a ladder. Descend.

Go north and talk with the man named Finbarr. He will tell you about a
demon called Devin.

After this, go back up the ladder, and then go east, south, and then far west.
(If these instructions confuse you, press the ‘#’ key to help make sense of
them.) Descend the ladder you find there. Talk to the woman to learn a sword
technique and grab a healing plant.

A word to the wise—do not converse with the villagers while your sword is
equipped. You will hurt them and they will run away scared.

Go through the forest until you find a man next to a house. His name is
Mendo. Give him the medicine plant. He will, in return, give you a
sledgehammer. It can be used to break those cumbersome rocks that,
previously, were blocking your way.

Go west.

Break the rocks and go South, then a little east. There is a house, some
stairs, and an old man! The music playing tells you that this old guy
(cleverly named Wise Old Man) is important. He tells you that Devin is
a bunch of folktale hoo-ey and that he needs to break the seal that
keeps the demons away. To accomplish this, he needs two gems, a silver
ring and a mushroom. And guess who the delivery boy is?

Go down the stairs to learn a new fighting technique and gain the Magical
Bow of Love! You need to use it on the abhorrent blacksmith. You can
either scare him away by poking him with your sword, OR… Head back to
the village by going east, north, and then east again.

Use the Magical Bow of Love on the ‘smith. Head north. Break the rocks and
enter the cave to learn a new sword technique. Exit. Go eat and enter another
cave there using your sledgehammer again.

You have to use the sledgehammer about 3 times to break rocks.

Collect the lost child. Go back to the villager again and deposit the squirt to
its poor mother. The Worried Mother will call you a true hero and give you
some roses. Go to the Desperate Girl and give her roses, saying they are from
the blacksmith. The two will get hitched and give you the Iron Ring as a
token of their appreciation. Otherwise, you could’ve just hurt the blacksmith,
and he would’ve dropped the ring when he fled.

Using your map, find a ladder to the south of the villager. Descend to find a
mushroom. Now you have two of the four items for the Wise Old Man.
Ascend and go west, north, west, south, and then east. You should be at the
Wise Old Man’s house. Use your map to navigate towards the ladder to the
east. Descend it and a man named Codar will teach you an ancient fighting
technique. Grab the green gem and leave.

Navigate carefully to the ladder to the northeast, fleeing or fighting any
baddies you may meet. Descend this ladder to learn yet another technique and
find the last gem! Take all four items—the red gem, green gem, mushroom
and the silver ring—to the Wise Old Man.

Give the Wise Old Man the four items, one by one. He says he’ll meet you at
the Gate. Go there. It’s in the mountains to the far east. On your map,
it is in the top-right corner.

The Wise Old Man says he will seal the gate after you and open it again when
you return.

Enter the gate. Your map will not work here. It is a maze. Keep going up until
the first fork, then take the right path.

Rento: Finally here – at the top of the Mountain of Darkness! This looks like
the castle of the Pegasus Rider who took my sister. There’s my sister with a
noble knight! I wonder why she’s so calm. Maybe I should go and talk to her
before I try to find and slay down the notorious Pegasus Rider…

(From now on, when you continue your game, you will be at this point.)

Your sister, oddly named Sister, tells you that the night, as well as the
Pegasus Rider, saved her! And guess what? Wise Old Man is actually Devin,
the Demon Lord!

Pegasus Rider tells you that now that the Demon Lord has the artefacts (that
YOU gave him!) he can break the sealed gate. The villagers of your town
have been captured and are going to turn into demons! So you have to save
the villagers and gather four wise men to seal the gate again.

And, with a cinema scene, that is the end.
