------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-1- * Introduction *
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The purpose of this guide is to act as a complete FAQ as well as thorough
walkthrough of the game.
If you are reading this, I can safely assume you have played at least one
game in the God Of War series already. God Of War : Betrayal is the debut
[and so far only entry of the series] on the mobile phone devices. I will
not tell you how to get it, can use any of the search engines or websites
that host mobile games.
Storywise GoW:B is set between events of first God of War [hereby referred to
as GoW1] and God of War II [GoW2]. This game follows the newly crowned God of
War, Kratos as he helps his Spartan army face the menance of a beast. As the
plot unfolds, a sinister conspiracy to turn Olympus against Kratos is
revealed.
Gameplay wise, GoW:B is closer to GoW1 than GoW2. I haven't played Chains of
Olympus so can't comment on the same. The combat may seem to fans of the
series as rather limited and repititive, but it flows seamlessly and is more
than you could ask for in a mobile game. Personally, I found this to be like
original Prince of Persia [graphics and platforming] with much better combat.
I will add to this section later if something comes to mind.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-2- * Controls and Combat *
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The game uses the numeric pad for most of the controls. The joystick on my
phone doesn't control Kratos, maybe you could try thsoe on yours. I'll first
introduce basic controls and then expand on them.
5 (OK) - Attack, Power Up Weapons/Magic
4 (Left) - Move left
6 (Right) - Move Right
2 (Down) - Block, Grab Enemies, Get down from a rope, Open chests, Pull Levers.
8 (Up) - Jump, Hang by Ledge.
* - Change Weapon/Magic
# - Show Power Up Menu.
Left Soft Key - Same as *
Right Soft Key - Show Menu
Jump: Press UP key to jump. Note that when you jump, Kratos will move vertically
as well as horizontally in the direction you're facing. There is no such
thing as vertical jump in this. It is important to keep this in mind in some
platforming puzzles. Just like GoW, when you jump near the edge of a ledge
you hang by it and need to press UP again to climb the ledge.
Drop Down: When hanging [by a ledge, rope etc.] pressing Down will make Kratos
drop down.
Double Jump: Works exactly like double ump of GoW1. Press UP, and then again
to make a longer higher jump.
Swing: At some points in game you will come across gaps too long to make across
even with a double jump. Always, there will be a GREEN BALL suspended in mid
air that you can grab and swing across. But it will only happen if you are at
right position and UP prompt is displayed on screen. Be careful not to jump
before you get the UP prompt as you will fall down to your death.
Combo Attacks: Press 5/OK repeatedly to do combo attacks like Plumes of
Prometheus.
Air Attacks: Press Up key to jump up in air and then press OK to do air
attacks.
Grab: When an enemy is stunned, a down arrow prompt appears above their head
like the 'O' prompt of GoW games. Go near the enemy and press 2/Down to start
the minigame.
Grab Moves: Once you grab an enemy, you have following options:
5/OK: Tear the enemy in half, like traingle in GoW1.
Left/Right: Throw the enemy at surrounding enemies, like [] in GoW. Advantage
of this move is you get a couple of Green Orbs.
For bigger enemies, a minigame sequence will start. Check the enemies section
for more details.
When hanging by rope, the only attack available is OK button, where Kratos
will do the quick kick jab. It is powerful enough.
When climbing ladders, OK button along with direction makes Kratos swing at
enemy in that direction. Only directions here are UP and DOWN.
RIGHT/LEFT Key Grab: Press RIGHT or LEFT key to grab boxes, statues etc. and
pull or kick them around.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-3- * Weapons/Magic *
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There are two weapons and two magic abilities available. Press * or Left Soft
Key to cycle through them. You can only cycle in a fixed order, which is as
follows:
1. Blades of Athena
The default weapon of the game, has same icon as in GoW1.
These are the weapons Kratos gets at end of GoW1. Only, there they are maxed
out, here they are at Level1 again. There are no fancy moves like GoW, rather
no fancy way to pull them off. Keep mashing OK and you can do a combo that
ends with Plumes of Prometheus [5 hit combo].
When in air, you do a move somewhat similar to Apollo's Ascension, in which
Kratos hits the enemies around him and falls down slowly. Note that enemies
never leave the ground, ever.
These have the advantage of longer range. Also, note that as you attack
enemies, Kratos moves towards the enemies. So, if you are close to the edge
and masking OK blindly, you might fall off.
2. Blade Of Artemis
Next weapon in set after BoAthena. This one has icon similar to BoA in GoW1.
This is also similar to the one in GoW1. This one has a 3-hit combo, final
move being the one where Kratos slams the Blade down on the enemy.
When in air, Kratos does an all around attack. I find the air version attack
better than ground version because the combo lasts longer, i.e. you can do
more hits.
One key difference from GoW1 here is that in GoW:B using this weapon depletes
your MAGIC bar.
3. Medusa's Gaze
Next weapon, rather magic in the weapon set. Same icon as in GoW1.
Press * key till you see Medusa's Gaze icon and hold OK key to freeze the
enemies. Just start mashing OK button, Kratos will automatically switch to
Blades of Athena and smash the forzen enemies.
Using Medusa's Gaze depletes the MAGIC bar.
4. Army of Hades
Final ability in the magic set. Same icon as in GoW1
Press * key till you see Army of Hades icon and press OK key to unleash the
magic. Once you use it, Kratos will switch to Blades of Athena.
Using AoH depletes MAGIC bar.
If you get hit before you use ANY MAGIC, Kratos will reset to Blades of
Athena, so be quick to cast magic.
UPGRADES are also present in GoW:B. You can upgrade at the end of a level.
Any orbs you can't use, get carried over to next level. You need RED ORBS
to upgrade weapons and magic. To powerup during a level press '#' key
to bring up Power Up menu. Use UP and DOWN to cycle through abilities and
OK key to power up. All weapons require same number of orbs to level up.
Level 1: Default. You start with this.
Level 2: 1000 RED orbs to upgrade.
Level 3: 2000 RED orbs to upgrade.
Level 4: 3000 RED orbs to upgrade.
Level 5: 4000 RED orbs to upgrade.
You are not likely to get all the red orbs to upgrade everything in a single
run. But when you replay the game, you carry over upgrades from previous runs.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-4- * Chests *
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Chests are similar to ones in GoW1. Tap the DOWN key to open cheshts.
RED Orb Chests: They give you Red orbs which you can use to upgrade your magic
and weapons. Most enemies give you red orbs when you kill them. There is a
limit to Red Orbs you can get in each level, but you're not likely to hit
that limit in your first run. When you replay a level, Red Chest Orbs will be
refilled. The number of Red Orbs increases with every level, with 200 Red Orbs
in first level.
GREEN Orb Chests: They yield life bar [or health bar] filling green orbs. You
also get green orbs by killing civillians and breaking certain pots present
in some levels. When you replay a level, Green Chests will be re-filled.
BLUE Orb chests: They give you BLUE orbs which refill your magic meter. You
also get blue orbs by killing certain enemies. They are also re-filled on
replays.
GORGON Eye chests: They are hidden throughout the game, though not on every
level and increase your health bar. There are 6 Gorgon Eyes [need to confirm
that with a fresh run] throughout the game. Each single eye increases the
health bar. They are not re-filled on replays.
PHOENIX Feather chests: They increase the Magic bar. So far I've only found
two of them. They are not re-filled on replays.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-5- * Walkthrough *
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Before we get started, let me mention a few general tips. The combat is rather
easy. I mentioned Prince of Persia for a reason. The only real challenge in
this game comes from some of the platforming elements. Blades of Athena are
good enough to finish the game on their own. Selecting magic is not as fast
as you have to press * key to cycle through abilities, and while you do that
you are open for an attack. Add to it that any attack will cancel magic
and reset you back to Blades of Athena, you'll find that magic is best equipped
before a battle begins, rather than in heat of the battle.
So, I'd recommend you upgrade Blades of Athena and try to max it out. You can
use Blade of Artemis too, but it uses Magic and lacks the long range of Blades
of Athena. However, Blade of Artemis does add a certain challenge to an
otherwise not so challenging combat.
Also, at most places enemies spawn 2/3 times. Stick around to kill them all
till they stop spawning to get Red Orbs.
Now lets get on with it.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-5.a- * For Sparta *
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Read the intro or skip through it. Watch the 'cut-scene' where Kratos joins
his Spartan army who are under attack. Watch Kratos rip a soldier in two
as game introduces you to controls for Blades of Athena. Press the Left Soft
Key when prompted for and prepare for the fight.
Kill the enemies and get familiar with controls. Read the instructions as and
when they come, though if you're reading this, you don't really need to.
Run forward till you get the UP prompt. Jump over and kill a few more soldiers.
Jump over the small obstacle till you reach the edge near a waterfall. You will
get an UP prompt. Press UP to swing over the waterfall. You can also jump, in
water and then climb up, won't die. Get to other side and find your first Red
Orb Chest. Tap the DOWN key to open the chest. Enter the crack in the wall
and get ready for your first of the many boss battles with, Argos.
Use any of the two weapons to do enough damage to Argos and the mini-game
DOWN prompt will appear over his head. You will need to press 3 keys in a
sequence to win the minigame. If you miss, you can try to grab him and start
the minigame again. Once you win the minigame, Argos will give Green and Blue
orbs, then scream at you and jump away. no need to follow him, he'll show
up again.
Run forward and jump on the ledge to find a Green Orb Chest. You shouldn't
need it right now, but if you do, take it. Get down from ledge and game
will tell you about Blade of Artemis. Press soft key and have some fun
with enemies.
Read instructions about grabbing the box if you want to and then run up to
the box and grab it. Once Kratos grabs it, tap RIGHT Key to kick the box.
There is an enemy on other side of box, but do't worry, the box can crush
enemies. Get the box next to wall and jump on top of it. You can Double
Jump to the ledge on left and grab the Green Chest if you want.
Climb the ledge to your right with a Double Jump and pull the lever. Now
you get Medusa's Gaze. Press LEFT Soft Key and then hold OK to freeze the
soldier. Then kill him with your Blades. Open the Blue Orbs Chest if you
want to and jump to grab the ladder.
Climb down to kill some soldiers and get some red orbs. The gate is closed.
Turn around and go to left to find a Red Orbs Chest. Then climb back up the
ladder and go all the way to the top. If you're low on health, go left and
jump across the gap to kill the civillian and get free Green Orbs.
Get under the rope and jump to grab the rope. Get down on other side, jump
into water and swim to other side. Moment you get out of water, turn around
and Double Jump to grab the ledge with Red Orbs Chest. Open the chest and
double jump back to right. Head forward to the ladder and jump down.
Now you need to kill 7 soldiers to make the glowing door on left to open.
Should be easy with any of the weapons. You can grab and throw them to get
a couple of green orbs. Continue down the left path to get Army of Hades.
jump down and take care of all enemies till they stop re-spawning.
Grab the statue and pull it enough so you can jump over it and go to the
path down the right side, which is currently blocked by statue. Go down the
right path and pull the lever to end the level.
Max First run Red orbs: 1050 Red Orbs
Total Red Orbs: 1250 [need to replay to get rest of the orbs]
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-5.b- * Dead Rider *
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The level starts with first battle against a new enemy, Dead Rider. Kill
the Dead Rider using any weapon and then finish him off with minigame.
Either ways he will give you Blue Orbs, so use Army of Hades to if you wish.
With the rider dead run to right and climb up the ladder. Once you reach the
top, Double Jump to your left and then swing across to find a Red Orbs Chest.
Then get back to where the ladder was and this time head to the right. Kill
the soldier. Wait for another to spawn and kill him too for Red Orbs. After
that jump across to the next roof and kill two more enemies. As always, wait
for them to respawn and kill them to get more red orbs. Double Jump across to
next roof and kill the soldier.
Double Jump to the next roof and crack open the wall to reveal a Red Orbs
Chest and your first Gorgon Eye. Power up your Blades if you have enough
Red Orbs and then get back and drop down for a fight.
You will have to kill a wave of soldiers and Dead Riders to open the gate.
There is also a Red Orbs Chest in here, but I would recommend to go for it
only if you haven't powered up yet, else wait for battle to end.
When done Double Jump across to the next roof. Make sure to Double Jump, if
you miss it will be instant death. Keep going to your left, killing all
enemies in the way till you reach reach a dead end. Drop down. There is a
pot you can smash to get Green Orbs.
This time you need to head right, Double Jumping across gaps, killing enemies
on the way. Finally you will reach another one of those glowing red doors.
This time also it will be a wave of Dead Riders and soldiers. When all are
killed, the door opens. Head through it to face Argos again. Your powered up
Blades should make this battle shorter than last time. Finish the minigame
to send him away and open the door.
Now comes the first of the many saw traps. There are 3 saws that come out of
the walls. They are easy to pass. Stand as close to a saw as you can without
being hit, wait for it to go back into wall and then run and stop just before
next saw. There is enough room for Kratos to stand without being hit. Be
careful, if you take a hit they drain about your health bar rapidly and two
hits will kill you even on maxed out health bar. To complicate matters
soldiers will come to attack you once you cross first saw. Use Medusa's Gaze
to freeze them. Give priority to running through the saws. The damage done by
soldiers is nothing compared to one from saws. Once through the saws, kill
all the enemies. There is a Green Orbs Chest in case you need it. The door
is locked for now. Turn left and double jump to the floor above the saw traps.
Kill the enemies and get the Blue Orbs Chest if you out of magic.
Double Jump to the roof on the right. You can jump on the ledge and take the
upper route from here, but you will have to backtrack. So, take the lower path
killing enemies, jumping and swinging across ledges, till you reach a lever.
Pull the lever to open a gate on the upper floor and backtrack back all the
way. Double jump to climb the ledge and walk across the beams to the door
you just opened.
Enter the door to finish the level.
Max First Run Red Orbs: 1310
Max Possible Red Orbs: 1500
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-5.c- * Minotaur *
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Power up your Blades of Athena if you haven't already. As the title suggests
and a Spartan tells you, a Minotaur is on the loose, but that is for later.
First you have to kill some soldiers and Dead Riders. Just stay where you are
and kill all that come to you. For final 2 you will have to jump across the
spike pit and kill them. When you kill them a Spartan will tell you about a
gate that can't be opened yet. Make a GOOD note of this gate, as by the time
you pull switch to open this one you will be so far away, you may not realize
this is where you want to go next.
Double jump to climb the ladder, watch out for flaming arrows. It's easy to
avoid them, just don't rush. Once you reach the top, head right, avoiding the
saws. You can jump to avoid the saws but remember if you land on the beam, you
will fall all the way down. So jump only when you're sure you're going to land
on solid ground. When you reach the end there is a statue. Pull it to left
and then Double Jump on it and face left. Jump on that platform and again
make your way across the beams, avoiding the saws. When you reach the last
one you will have to swing across the gap, so be prepared to hit UP. On
landing continue to your left and Double Jump when you reach the end of the
ledge. Turn right and jump to grab the ledge and climb the next floor. Again
head right avoiding the saws. Kill the enemies at the end then grab the
Gorgon Eye for another health bar upgrade.
Turn left and Double Jump to climb to the next floor. Kill the enemies and
grab the Red Orbs from the chest. Then head left, swing across the gap and
then climb to the next floor through the gap in ceiling. Take the right path
first, killing all enemies on the way. In the end you get a Right Orbs Chest.
After that head back to the left path and climb on to the rope. You can also
jump down and then jump across gap, following the rope.
There is a Spartan next to a chest. Kick the chest as much as you can, it
should be half across on other side and half under the gate's ledge. Then
turn around and go down the ladder, grabbing Green Orbs Chest if you need it.
As Spartans will tell you, Minotaur fight is up next. But it's a pushover if
you've upgraded your Blades of Athena. If not, just keep your distance and
keep attacking with your combos. Health shouldn't be an issue if you got the
Green Orbs Chest. Also, there are 3 civillians you can kill for Green Orbs.
If you finish Minotaur using minigame, you get Green Orbs. After you kill
the Minotaur, another will spawn. Kill him too for some extra Red Orbs.
When done, climb the ladder and jump to the floor and run to your right to
find a switch and the box you earlier pushed under a gate. Grab the box but
be careful not to kick it. Pull it over the switch and make a note of the
gate that opens.
Jump on the ledge with newly opened gate and run past the Spartan and once
again drop down to area where we fought Minotaur earlier. This time head
right to the newly opened gate. Remember I told you to remember a gate early
on? That is where we need to go now. How? Simple, just drop down instead of
jumping across. The gate is next to the ladder with flaming arrow and two
Spartans on other side. Run through the gate for another fight with Argos,
this time accompanied by two Dead Riders. You will need to kill Argos as
well as all the Dead Riders to advance.
Once the battle is over, head to the newly opened door to finish the level.
Single run orbs: 1000

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-6- * Enemies *
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Enemies in GoW:B are not tough to kill as none of them blocks. They can only
damage you by sheer power of numbers ad flanking you from either side.
a. Soldiers
-----------
These are ordinary soldiers. Their only attack is a broadsword. Easy kill and
don't do much damage. You can grab them and throw them around to get a couple
of Green Orbs. They give 10 Red Orbs on dying.
b. Dead Rider
-------------
You first encounter them in 2nd level. They are dead men riding a horse and
have a trident as weapon. Before they attack, the horse will rise on its hind
legs. For close range fighting, Blade of Artemis works fine. though you'd
be safe using Blades of Athena from a distance. They don't give any Red Orbs
but give Blue Orbs. You can finish them using a 2-button minigame activated
by pressing DOWN when DOWN [Grab] prompt comes over their heads.
c. Minotaurs
------------
Easier than the ones in GoW. They roar before they attack, which does good
enough damage. Make sure to hit them when they roar to cancel their attack.
By the time you first encounter them, you should have upgraded your Blades
of Athena to Level3. If you did, it will be short fight. Level 4 onwards,
you fight them more frequently. They give 30 Red Orbs if finished using
normal attacks and Green Orbs if finished using 2-button minigame sequence.
d. Undead Soldiers
------------------
Another enemy from GoW1 returns. They are like normal Soldiers, only harder
to kill and do more damage. And they give 15 Red Orbs on dying.
**** Bosses ****
a. Argos
--------
You fight him at least once in every level till you finish him off. He jumps
at you if you try to run away and also has as sweeping arm attack. Keep
attacking him non-stop so as not to give him a chance to attack. However,
since Kratos' attacks make him move in direction of enemy and he moves faster
than Argos, be careful not to blindly mash and turn around if you cross over
Argos.
He can only be killed using a 3-button minigame sequence. He will give both
Green and Blue orbs. When you fight him for final time, there is a twist.
You have to push him down into sewers. You can't kill him no matter how much
damage you do. I've found it's best to be far enough so that single swipe of
Blades of Athena connect and then slowly tap OK to hit him with single swipes.
Don't spam the attack button, do gradual but spaced out continous swipes to
push him back.
b. Ceryx
--------
The Messenger of the Gods and son of Hermes, Ceryx. What makes battle with him
tough is presence of Dead Riders. There are chests here, but don't bother
unless you're sure there is no Dead Rider on screen. A good ploy here is to
jump in air and attack as you're invincible when in air. A minigame sequence
will commence once you've done enough damage. After 2/3 such sequences, you'll
win. In case you die, don't worry, you'll restart the battle with full health
and magic. Use Army ofHades as and when you can to take care of the Dead
Riders.
