"A great, original racing game."

F-Zero X is without a doubt the best racing game on the N64 and a really good racing game. There isn’t too much competition (for the N64) in this genre though. The 64 has the Cruisin’ series and that’s about it. It’s a cheesy mario kart 64 either. It is incredibly fast-paced and is an incredibly intense experiance

Graphics: 9 out of 10
The graphics are perfect for the style of the game. While not too detailed you will barely be able to notice these small things. This is a game where you will not want to blink or look away from the road. There is no slow-down at all during gameplay. Graphics aren’t the main aspect anyway.

Story:
I can’t really give it a score but it is worth mentioning because each of the 30 racers has a background listed in the instruction booklet. I thought it was interesting that you could actually understand what kind of a person each racer was.

Sound/Music: 9 out of 10
The sound quality and sound effects are excellent. The music is a wide variety of techno themes that nicely fit the nature of the game. Not a ten because some of the themes can get a little repetitive but otherwise the music is great.

Control: 10 out of 10
The control is perfectly set up on the Nintendo 64 controler and you can easily use any function of the game. The control is perfectly responsive and there are no problems during gameplay.

Gameplay: 8 out of 10
The racing itself is pure fast-paced fun. You start with 6 cars and there are 4 more rows of 6 cars to unlock. There are 5 different cups (a series of 6 races against 29 computer opponents) but two of them have to be unlocked. There 4 different difficulties but you have to unlock the last one. This game is easy to learn but hard to master. It is simple but fun. There’s 30 racetracks and the coarse design is much more interesting than in the original. There’s a Time Attack mode in which you set records on each coarse. There’s a death race where you just go in one big loop the whole time and try to knock off the other 29 racers. There’s a versus mode where you can play with 3 of your friends or with a friend and 2 CPUs, etc. The game is plenty challenging; at times almost too challenging. I admit I used a gameshark to unlock almost one third of the things in the game. When starting off if you play it a lot you will get very good at it but it is absolutely incredible if you can unlock everything without a gameshark. It got two points of because you can’t play a two player cup race, you can’t have a 2-4 play deathrace and its too challenging when you are unlocking some of the last things.

Overall: 8 out of 10
While it isn’t by any means a perfect game it has its moments and is really fun and different from other racers on the market. EGM even put it on their top 100 video games of all time list. Its worth a rent to all gamers and racing fans.
