"The best game on the N64"
The N64 is a console that provides great graphics, but inferior sound. Thus it is hard to make a movie style game for the N64 such as Metal Gear Solid or Resident Evil. Such games require the speech and music to be highly effective. But, Goldeneye for N64 defies these beliefs. Granted, it still does not have speech, and all the conversations take place in text boxes, the rest of the game more than makes up for it.
The game is based on the popular James Bond movie of the same name. It is a first person shooter in the essence of Wolfenstein 3D. The levels are beautifully detailed and if you have seen the movie, you will always know exactly which part you are in. The weapon selection is enormous and they have a certain Bond flair to them. Weapons such as proximity mines and the traditional PP7, give the game a genuine Bond feel. There are a lot of levels, most of them depicting scenes from the movie. Beating these levels in different difficulty settings unlock cheat options. Some of these cheat options can be used in the best part of the game, the multiplayer.
The multiplayer is a great death match mode, where up to four players can go at it trying to kill each other. With various modes, weapon choices and locations to choose from, this mode is a blast. You can even have 1 on 2, 2 on 2 or 1 on 3 matches. The license to kill mode is great as it requires only one shot to kill. Many people will play the multiplayer more than the game itself.
Overall, the lack of speech does hurt, but not that much. This is the premier N64 game.
The graphics are awesome. Enemies react properly when shot. You can also see blood stains on the enemies. The environments remind you a lot of the movie.
Lack of speech hurts, but the cool music makes up some of it.
This game is a lot of fun. The three difficulty settings are proper. The hard mode is really hard while the easy mode is pretty easy.
Replay Value: 10.
Single player mode is a ton of fun. Multiplayer is even better. It will be hard to put this game away.
Without question, N64's best.
