This in-depth guide will cover everything related to the whereabouts of
every NPC, and their regular agendas. I will also explain the mechanics behind
how their location is determined, what is and what isn't randomly generated,
and also uncover the mysterious Gourmet Judge's seemingly rare appearances at
the crossroads. This will also include special appearances for the five
marryable girls in Harvest Moon 64. You'll notice the five marryable girls, are
vastly more detailed than the rest and it is not because I got lazy for the
rest of the NPCs, it is because the other NPCs weren't programmed with
complicated location agendas and have a very simple few locations each. Look at
Kent, Stu, and May for example. Not to mention every bit of detail on the
girl's whereabouts will come in handy for those infamously difficult Full Album
challenge runs.

I only expect to release this document once, in terms of content as I'm very
certain I've uncovered everything right down to the programming aspect of it
all. Updates will likely be grammatical and / or spelling fixes, or otherwise
information I either discover myself, or I'm informed of and tests prove such
information to be positive and accurate.

I completed all of this work beforehand, as I'm simply not the type of guy
that likes to submit half or partially completed work, thus the only date I
really have to provide at this time is the release date to GameFAQs.

This initial release took somewhere around 120 hours of work to compose and
analyze the game while recording and organizing the information into a decently
readable format.

For the longest time, based on my research of when articles were posted online,
several forums, and even through low-class personal websites. It seems that the
general HM64 players have not been entirely aware of exactly how the
randomization of certain NPC's locations works. It is fairly complicated to
figure out (which I'll take care of the hard work for you all), but once the
knowledge is available, it can make convenient routes to your daily searches
for certain NPCs something of ease and more on the back burner than ever,
allowing you to optimize your time during each day.

First of all, every NPC in the game has a unique and special location byte
which is randomly generated between the values of 00 and 03 (00, 01, 02, 03).
This value can never exceed 03 under any conditions.. leaving the NPCs with
only four possible location byte values per NPC. Of course, only one per day is
used, as it is a single byte. When you sleep, that is when the number is
generated.

Generally, every NPC changes to 00, 01, 02, or 03 by exactly a 25% chance each
value.. making them entirely equal. The only exception to this is Karen. She
has a special pointer which caps off the random number generator (not the
location byte) to certain values and cut-offs so she appears at certain
locations more than others. Sleeping on Monday night or Tuesday night, there is
roughly a 40% chance Karen will be assigned byte 02 or 03. This means she will
not appear anywhere in the game for the entire next day, also because she
doesn't work the bar on Tuesday or Wednesdays. 02 & 03 usually are specific
locations for the NPC to appear on a certain day, but those two values for
Karen makes her appear nowhere in the game! So it's a 50 / 50 chance pretty
much, that you will see her or not. I would even dare say it's closer to 60%
odds that you will see her and 40% odds that you will not.

How is their appearance determined exactly?
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ

A simple series of checksums of very specific bytes when you enter a screen,
which are then used in a formula of priority sequence. I will list the bytes
that are checked in order from highest priority to lowest priority.

Festival byte
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ

If the byte is 00 (non-festival day), the NPC will appear. If it is 01
(festival day) the NPC will not appear (at their regular locations).

Weather byte
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ

The byte that controls "today's weather" is then checked. If it is 01 (sunny),
they will appear in their normal locations. If it is 02 (rainy), 03 (snowy), or
any other weather value that is not 01.. they will appear in their sheltered /
rainy locations as I will from here out call them.

Season byte
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ

Some NPCs (events not included, such as the hot springs being built etc) will
have a specifically scripted, new location to appear during a season, or during
certain days of a certain season. If it involves events, basically this byte
does not come into play.

Day of the month byte
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ

Specifically, the Library. It is closed from the 1st to the 10th of every
Summer and Winter. Only those two seasons. The NPCs that use the Library (all
of them) will have special locations during these 20 days of the year, but
revert back to their normal schedules starting on the 11th of those seasons.
This only affects the locations of Maria, Harris, and May. Maria gets a new
agenda during these days, whereas May and Harris just disappear when they would
normally be inside the Library.

Weekday byte
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ

This is quite possibly the biggest determining factor of where the NPC will
actually be at any given time. The basic laws of this byte are whether or not
the NPC is having a 'work day'. If they're on a work day, they will be at their
work location all day. If they have the day off, they utilize the next bytes to
determine their location. (All location bytes will lead them to their normal
place at work, maybe a few spaces different then usual or outside the store for
example).

Location byte
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ

As explained in the opening paragraph, this can range from 00 - 03. This is
randomly generated each night. If they are 'off work' on a certain day,
depending on the weekday, this byte determines which screen they will appear
on.

Hour byte
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ

This has nothing to do with WHERE they are (with a few very specific example
like the kids when they leave church after 3:00 pm and hang around various
places, always the same places based on weekday / location bytes, until 5:00
pm). Elli changes location in the middle of every Wednesday, regardless of
weather... but only from two specific locations which are always the same,
every Wednesday, year 'round. Basically, the hourly byte determines whether
they are present on the screen when you enter it. For example, Karen is
available at the beach every Sunday, with any location byte, between 10:00 am
and 5:59 pm. If the hour byte hits 18 (6:00 pm) and you enter the screen, she
will not be there. Same goes for byte 06 - 09 (6:00 am - 9:59 am).

Some logic

The season byte and day of the month byte might as well be disregarded as it is
unimportant except for the NPCs that use the Library or the ones that disappear
entirely during certain seasons... with the exception of Elli who appears at a
specific place every Monday during the summer only.

Conclusive
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ

First note, in case you're wondering what "50% chance" etc. means... it does
not mean they only have a 50% chance of appearing on the screen. It means 2 of
their 4 possible locations bytes will lead them there. There are only four
location bytes four every NPC; 00; 01; 02; and 03. So there is a 25% equal
chance they will randomly draw one of those values per day (with the exception
of Karen, see opening mechanics paragraph for details).

Exploiting the location byte randomization system
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ

Next, the big myth behind bar mechanics. Yes, I thought this was a separate
mechanic from the rest of NPC appearance mechanics, but it turns out that that
is not the case! I emphasize the importance of this because I found out that
you don't have to manipulate their location like weather, by replaying a day
and messing around with save file slots! This is very important to know and
why, do you ask? After several tests I found out why you can change what NPCs
the bar will have in it every night. And the answer is simple. EVERY NPC
RANDOMLY GENERATES THEIR LOCATION WHEN YOU LOAD THE SAVE FILE! The number
generates when the morning begins, not right before you save like weather! This
makes NPC locations 100% exploitable, the only downside is if you plan on
playing your day after you see where they are, then reload the file.. that will
not work because they will re-generate their locations when you go to try that
day again. That's okay! You can still plan out the main NPCs you want to
encounter in that specific day, optimize your route, if they are in the
locations you want them to be, great! If not, you don't have to replay the day
before like previously thought, but only that day until you get the results you
like.

The format I will be using for the agendas is simple. The NPCs will be listed
in alphebetical order, but within three sub-groups. These groups are; The
Girls, The Rivals, amd Everyone Else.. in that order. For the girl's agendas,
firstly their weekday schedules will be written as this is the general thing
to look out for and follow in order to determine their whereabouts. General
comments are then written, followed by special appearances, which for two of
the five girls is on the beach at night at certain times and dates, the girl's
sick events, the girl's sprained ankle events, and then the girl's dream
events. Finally, their hourly agenda will be written. Everyone else, including
the rivals will have their weekly / hourly agendas combined as well as any
other relevant information to determine their locations. Most of them are
quite simple to follow.

As a final note before I get to the agendas, when obtaining recipes from the
NPCs, location does NOT matter whatsoever. They can be at the bar, or anywhere
that is not a festival.


Now that the mechanics are explained. I will list a complete agenda for every
NPC.

Needless to say, she is similar to Maria by having a strict weekday byte
priority override most of the time. On rainy days, she has a 100% chance to
appear inside the Green Ranch animal barn near the back. However, if that day
is a Thursday (day off work) since the barn is locked along with the livestock
dealer, she is in fact inside the barn because that is her rain location
(regardless of location byte, weather overrides all pretty much) but just
cannot be reached. Simply put, Ann is unreachable on rainy Thursdays. Just to
clarify, this is her schedule during all four seasons. For winter, replace
raining locations with snowing locations. She evens works on her normal days in
Winter.

Special appearances:

If it is Summer, Tuesday night, from 6:00 pm - 8:59 pm, and her location byte
has to be 00, (not 01, 02, or 03, basically 25% chance) Ann will show up at the
beach.

Exploitable use, even though hard to come by
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ

If you have talked to Maria or Ann during the day and given them gifts and
received the affection for said gestures... you can gain ANOTHER boost of
affection by talking to them again that night, this was tested for both girls
for accuracy. You cannot give them a second gift. Too bad they only show up on
the beach so rarely, and only these girls, otherwise early girl photo
requirements would've become drastically easier without exploits.

Sick location:

When her affection is 120 or higher, and it is raining or snowing, she will
appear at her sick location. (One time only event)

Must be a day of the week that she is not working and that the Livestock Dealer
is open, (Sunday only) enter the Livestock Dealer to trigger the scene.

Sprained ankle location:

When her affection is 180 or higher, and it is sunny, she will appear at the
crossroads. (This happens only once, and won't happen again whether you
interact with her while you are on the screen or not).

Dream location:

When you have triggered Ann's dream, the next sunny day she will appear at the
carpenter's house screen.

Note: Wednesday could be a work day based on her being in a forced location
during her entire time of availability in all seasons. If it is 11:59 am or
earlier, when you enter the flower shop, she will be there 100% of the time. If
it is 12:00 pm later and you enter the north village screen, she is next to her
grandmother, Ellen. My theory says this is a day off for her and she enjoys the
fundamentals of shopping at the flower shop and spending time with her
grandmother.

Monday - Spring & Fall & Winter schedule:

This took hours of testing, moving the location byte around as well as trying
different hour bytes during the days since she happens to change her position
on Wednesdays from before or after noon. She has quite a complex schedule,
thanks to the fact that on every Wednesday her character reads from the hour
byte script not just for appearance / disappearance, but changes her location
in the middle of her usual availability routine. Fortunately, it's always the
same. Wednesdays... flower shop in the morning, tending to her grandmother
outside the bakery in the afternoon.

I have done vast amounts of testing and Elli is nowhere to be found anywhere
and anytime on any Sunday, but I think this was 100% intended by the
developers.. because if it were a glitch, she would still appear in her rain
location even on a Sunday because her workplace (bakery) is open that day.
Simple enough to remember that every Monday in the summer, all day, there is a
100% chance she will be standing on the dock at the beach. Any other Monday of
the other seasons, she is on one of the two mentioned mountain screens
(fisherman's tent screen and carpenter's house screen).

If you ever find her on a Sunday, let me know. I don't think it's possible to
prove me wrong about this because A) I have her location byte and B) I tested
EVERY screen on every hour byte of the day.. even way out of the way ones like
the mountain summit or inside the old couple's house on the summit screen. She
wants her space on Sundays, so let her be!

Special appearances:

Special note: Because she is the only girl that appears at the bar, instead of
the generator drawing equally (25% chance for either 00, 01, 02, 03 like almost
every other NPC) her generator is built around so she becomes difficult to find
on some Tuesdays and Wednesdays. About a 35% - 45% chance she will never be
seen on a Tuesday or Wednesday. She is possible to find every day, however.
Just never when it rains.

Her bar appearance mechanics: There is a 100% chance she will show up at the
bar on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.... but unfortunately a 0%
chance of showing up at the bar on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. It is unknown if
her bar mechanic has her working on Sunday, because it is closed, so it is
pointless to know anyway.. at least until I make a "x building is always open"
code for you cheaters. :P

Another special note. She seems to be missing on certain days during of Fall
after the Vineyard has been restored. She can be found physically working in
the Vineyard along with her parents and Kai.

First of all, an important note. Everywhere and every guide I've read states
that the library is closed every season after the first spring from the 1st to
10th, no exceptions. This is not true! The library is open all month every
Spring and every Fall of every year. However, in Summer and Winter only, the
library is closed from the 1st to the 10th.

Winter first hits, but gradually gets used to it until about... oh... the 11th,
give or take a few in game hours. Then she becomes immune and takes her spring
/ fall stances on Mondays as usual. Hah.

Important note: Basil has a unique yearly agenda as most of you know. The exact
mechanics behind it are simple. The game begins with Basil scripted as "absent"
from the HM64 universe. If you enter your farm screen (outside your house) any
day from and including Spring 15th until Fall 4th, Basil will greet you
immediately as you enter the screen. Whether you choose to talk to him or not,
from that moment he is back within the HM64 universe, including the 15th, he
begins appearing at these locations. You can't skip this by waking up on the
15th and sleeping any number of days without going outside, then hoping he
didn't return (or come back), for the script is designed to have that event
stay there every morning until you enter that screen.. and since you have to
enter that screen to leave your house and go anywhere, you basically have no
choice. The same goes for when he leaves in Fall. Including and after Fall 5th,
he will be scripted to appear until you trigger the event. Which means
including the 5th and onward, he will not be in his regular places, he will
vanish from the HM64 universe until Spring 15th of the next year.

I am not going to bother trying to see if you can skip his return / leave or
glitch the script to work in any way it wasn't intended as this would require
sleeping through entire seasons, and anyone who would utilize that tactic in
any kind of run is just plain stupid (no offense to those who disagree).

Summary: Basil is available from Spring 15th until Fall 4th, every year. This
includes his bar appearances, he will never appear at the bar unless he is
'available'.

Always wondered why he's rare and never shows up until Winter (and even rarely
appears afterwards)?

There's a very simple science to him appearing at the crossroads once you know
what triggers what in what order and what is required (I'll pretend that wasn't
confusing the write).

First of all, you need to restore the vineyard. You do not need to partake of
the Karen photo event, but the vineyard must be restored. Exactly one month
after Fall 7th (Winter 7th and anytime after that) when you enter your farm
screen between 3:00 pm and 4:59 pm, Karen will arrive and let you sample the
new 'sweet wine' now that it is ready. This triggers her scene byte, but also
this other mysterious byte that I have now labeled as the Gourmet Byte. Both
byte changes are permanent once you view that specific Karen scene.

Anyways, once the gourmet byte has been triggered, there are two conditions
left in order for him to appear.

-The time of day has to be between 9:00 am and 4:59 pm.
-His location byte has to be 00 (cannot be 01, 02, or 03).

He begins to appear in these conditions (basically a 25% chance every day) on
all seasons, all days of the week, except festivals.
