"A game worthy of the name Zelda."
The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask was released in late October of 2000 for the Nintendo 64. It is the sequel to the 1998 smash hit, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. This game was developed and published by Nintendo, unlike every other Zelda game released, this one featured little input from Shigeru Miyamoto, this had many long-time Zelda fans worried, thankfully, these worries were all for naught. Be forewarned, this game does require the Expansion Pak to play.
Graphics-10/10- The in-game graphics are some of the most amazing I’ve ever seen in a video game; the characters are all highly detailed, the in-game environments are also amazing, the textures are, for the most part, very clear. The masks look amazing, considering the huge amount of them in the game, you might think that they would all be very plain and lack originality, not so, they are all quite colorful and vibrant (especially Majora’s Mask, it must be seen to be believed.) The character design is, as to be expected, brilliant, all of the characters feature unique personalities that add a ton of humor to the game.
Pros- Great environment textures. Excellent character design.
Cons- Some blurring on textures.
Sound-10/10- The music is amazing, it is truly some of the best I’ve ever heard in a video game (the title song is my personal favorite.) The sound effects are of equal quality, all of them are crystal clear and fit their action perfectly.

Gameplay-9/10- Much like every Zelda game, you spend a lot of time talking to people, going through dungeons, and beating bosses. In this installment, however, it tends to be a little bit more redundant than it should be, I don’t know if it’s the over-saturation of 3D adventure games or the 3-day time limit placed on you to beat the game, but getting through some of the dungeons can, occasionally, seem like a chore. Thankfully, these moments are few and far between.
Pros- The game is fun to play through, but...
Cons- The time limit can place unneeded stress.
Story-7/10- You have three days to find the Skull Kid (from Zelda: Ocarina of Time) and retrieve a precious mask from him that he stole from a mask shop owner. During the game you'll collect masks that allow you to use the abilities of numerous life forms, including the Zora, Goron, and Deku. I’ve got to give credit where credit is due, the story is very original, but it just doesn’t make much sense.
Pros- Original story.
Cons- Doesn’t make much sense.
Control-10/10- This game uses the N64 controller in more ways than any game in recent memory. This quite a surprise seeing as how you have completely different control schemes based on whatever form you happen to be in (Deku, Zora, Goron, and Normal.) The control in all of the forms is excellent, it’s always responsive with nary a hint of sluggishness anywhere. Like Ocarina of Time, you use the analog stick to move and jump around the environments, also like OoT, you can see the button actions on the top-right part of the screen with the buttons laid out and the actions posted on them based on the situation you’re currently in, this is a nice feature that prevents confusion.
Pros- Silky-smooth control. On-screen button layout is a nice touch.
Replay Value-3/10- This game takes around 30 hours to beat the first time-around, seriously doubt anyone would want to play through it again, no matter how much fun it was the first time.
Presentation-10/10- Perfect, everything from the characters, to the towns and dungeons, to the menus fits the Zelda look perfectly.
Overall-10/10- This is one of the N64’s best games; I encourage all N64 owners to go to the store and buy this game immediately, it combines some of the best graphics, sound, and control to ever hit video games. The only downside to it is it's lack of replay value.
