"A few flaws, but still a great game"

Pilotwings 64 was a release game for the N64 and it was a great game if you like the genre. If you don't it'll be boring and a waste of good money.
On the other hand it is never too late to buy it, because I doubt there will ever come a good sequel.
At the beginning you'll be thrown in a few attractive environments (including a tiny version of the USA). Once you have chosen your vehicle, you can start your career. The player needs to accomplish the missions and he will get a score depending on how he did his flight. The controls of each vehicle aren't too difficult, the missions themselves become frustrating tough.
Later on when you finish the game you'll only be rewarded with a few boring bonus levels, you'll also notice that the missions become repetitive.
Still it is a great game, the missions may repeat each other, but the atmosphere always manages to challenge and fascinate the player. After all it is an addictive game. After playing it a few months, you COULD be tired (or even sick) of it. But you WILL feel the addiction again and that is the reason why you should buy it instead of renting it.
It feels like a cigaret. You get sick of it, you want to quit, but you will never resist.
The game also contains some great innovations from his predecessor on the SNES. The environments are much more detailed (including mountains). But this is also a negative point because Pilotwings 64 doesn't make enough use of the capacities of the N64. Now programmers could make a much more better game for the same console with the same specifications.
Another point is the lack of good story, now that is good. In this game it would only stand in your way. Now the only thing you have to do is put in your cartridge (which only uses 8 of the 64kb) and go quickly through the menus (without loading) to play. You aren't disturbed by a long story which is only fiction. The only thing this game needs is good gameplay, and you'll have that I guarantee.
The soundtrack is rather simplistic and repetitive, but somehow it reminds me of the good old SNES. Besides, the sound effects of the vehicles are quite realistic.

As a conclusion you could say, a great game which is worth buying a N64 for!
By the way, Pilotwings is one of the few games which still contains the WTC Towers.
