"Oh my god! They killed Kenny! Better hit the reset button..."
The hit show, South Park, a late night cartoon featuring very rude children, a chef who sings about love and a councilor with a huge head. Acclaim, Who is famous for making games based on Television shows, like The Simpson’s, took the South Park license a little too far, making three games based on South Park. The very first one was a Shoot Them Up, and was released on the Nintendo 64 first, P.C second and Playstation, third.
As soon as you switch on the console and watch the Acclaim commercial, you know you are in for a treat. The Acclaim lizard, appears in the South Park fields, the children run around like headless chickens, then the lizard bites Kenny's head off, leaving you in laughter. Then you are greeted with a 3D Version of the animated theme tune and Opening credits. The little sing song at the start is exactly the same, but the animations, which are 3D are different, and you have more characters on the screen. If that doesn't entertain you, nothing will.
The graphics do seem very blocky in the game though, and in real time cut scenes. Moreover, when objects get to close to the screen, they seem very smudged, and only an expensive Expansion pack will sort it out for you. The characters are now in ground breaking 3D spirits, everyone looks great 3D, and everyone from 2D looks better in 3D.
South Park, the game is full of humor. In the story, Cartman tells Chef that the fate of the world is in his (Cartman's) hand's. Chef then says ''oh Crap''. Gameplay wise, things will make you cry in laughter, such as little animals scattered around levels, like cute rabbits or horses, you can kill them. Not only that but the weapons are funny, such as a ''Foam gun'' or ''Terrence and Phillip fart dolls'', ''Cow Launcher'' or, the most bizarre, ''The Alien Dance machine''. Those are just some of the funny weapons, but wait until you find upgrades, like the ability to wee on your snowballs, or a machine which makes aliens, or multiplayer characters DANCE!
The main story does not have much to do with the Television show, but the characters do. The levels are ''episodes'', which try and match those of the show. Only the ''mutant turkey'' scenario comes close, and those which aren't like the show are obscure tales of Clones of Officer Brabery and friends, or killer toys go on the rampage.
The game is a Shoot Them Up. You have a first person view of the boy's, Kenny, Kyle, Stan and Eric Cartman and must go around killing everything in site. You basically have to go from point A to Point B, without getting killed. The controls take some getting used to, but if you have played Golden Eye or Turok, you can instantly change your controls to those of ''Bronze Eye'' and ''To-Rock''.
South Park does have faults in Gameplay and Graphics. The worst perks are Mist in the backgrounds, making getting lost very easy. Secondly, There is a massive number of enemies coming at you all at once. If lot's of turkeys come at you in groups of fifty all at once, you would be a bit fed up wouldn't you?
At the start of every ''episode'', You end up in South Park, the town, which gets re-modeled every episode. You have to find your friends there and take them on your adventure. The South Park town touch is very good, All the buildings, like the school, Mayor's office and the kid's houses, all are there.
Every couple of missions, you have a very fun sub-mission. An evil monster will attack South Park, yes, attack it. You need to destroy these evil minions to save your town, before it suffers enough damage and becomes a big pile of rubble.
The most fun thing about the game is the Multi-Player mode. There is a massive amount of character's to unlock, such as Pip, Cartman's mother, Starving Marvin, Alien's and Ike. The multiplayer is very fun, and has no real faults. This is one of the best multi-player games on the Nintendo 64, but is beaten by Mario Party and Mario Kart.
