I know myself, I have thoroughly enjoyed playing this game for a good number of years. There are still a lot of extra things that can be accomplished after collecting all 120 stars, and this guide explores some of the extras that this game offers. Even after Super Mario Sunshine has been released, I still feel more of a connection with SM64. Why use this FAQ? ----------------- This FAQ is was originally designed for those who have already collected all 120 stars and are hoping to increase their coin totals, and ultimately aiming to collect all 2091 possible coins in the 15 courses. However, this FAQ is also a great reference guide for all players of SM64, for example, if you are still trying to collect the 100-coin star in some of the courses. I like to think of it as a "statistical FAQ", which contains a good amount of information about this game, most of which is not actually needed to conquer the game. What's in this FAQ? ------------------- In this FAQ you will find detailed statistics about every course / bonus level. The charts at the beginning summarize a lot of the info in this guide. In fact, this FAQ describes the location of all 2672 coins in the game. Currently the locations of the enemies are not given, but the amount of each enemy in every level is given, so most are easy to find. If you really need help finding some, you may e-mail me. This FAQ also completely documents all 121 1UP mushrooms in the game. To my knowledge, not one has been left out. You will also find the locations of several other important items in this guide, like the cap blocks, ! blocks, cannons, koopa shells, spinning hearts, and teleports (warps). What's not in this FAQ? ----------------------- This FAQ does not include locations of the stars. A good many other FAQs already provide this information, and I know that the majority of people who still play this game have them all anyway. This guide does not give the individual locations of the red coins in each level either. If you cannot find one, you may e-mail me, or check another guide. How to use this FAQ ------------------- This FAQ is split into several different sections. The first main section "Statistical Charts" contains several charts that summarize every statistic in this guide. You can look at these to determine, for example, how many coins, 1UPs, or enemies there is in a certain level. No actual locations are given in this section though. The second section "Coins & Enemies" gives the locations of the coins in each level, shows a breakdown of how many yellow / red / blue coins are in each level, and how many coins come from the enemies of that level. It also gives a breakdown of each type of enemy in that level. Next, the "Tricks of the Trade" section goes through each level and gives helpful tips on how to achieve the coin high score in that level. If you're having trouble with a level, check here for pointers. It may also describe the location of some coins in greater detail (e.g. the secret/impossible coin). The next section contains the locations of various items. "1UP Mushrooms" goes through each level and tells the location of each 1UP mushroom in the game. I myself have found 121 of them, and I don't think there are any more. If you find another I don't have listed, please send me an e-mail and I'll give you full credit. Then comes the locations of special items in each level, namely the cap blocks, ! blocks, cannons, koopa shells, spinning hearts, and teleports (warps). Development of this FAQ ----------------------- Probably about a year after I got the game, I took upon the challenge to collect every coin in the game. When I was finished, I was confident I had independently collected every coin in the 15 courses - which totaled up to 2090. Later, in October 2002, I came across a website which spoke of the "secret coin", and I quickly found it so I could add this final coin to make my coin total 2091. I can honestly say this was the only coin I did not track down myself. A BIG thanks goes to its finder, Josiah. But my search did not end there. I also wanted to collect and document every single 1UP mushroom. Currently, I have found 121 myself - if you know of one I do not have listed, please e-mail me about it, and I'll give you full credit for its discovery. You will find the locations of many other important items in this guide as well. This FAQ should be all you need (along with some SM64 skill) to collect all 2091 coins as I have done. I also have included coin totals for every bonus level as well, which brings the grand total to 2672 coins in the entire game. (That's 1779 yellow coins, 184 red coins, and 105 blue coins!) I hope you have as much fun as I did collecting them all. I first mentioned to others that I was making this FAQ probably around October 2002; so it's taken me a long time to finish everything. I had most of the info from the start, but the guide was never fully completed until I submitted it to GameFAQs in November 2003! I hope you enjoy it. ******************************************************************************* * 2.0 * * STATISTICAL CHARTS * Look here for some pointers! Bob-omb Battlefield ------------------- Total Coins: 146 Well, as this is the first level, it's not designed to be difficult. Most of the coins are very easy to collect, but you will need the Wing Cap to get them all, with 45 yellow coins in the sky. You could get them all using only cannons, but it would take a lot of shooting. You also cannot select the first or second star, because the Koopa Troopa will not appear. Remember that you must run around the posts before you slam them into the ground, or else you will get no coins. Yes, that means you must run around Chain Chomp's post with him still there. Every other coin is fairly straight-forward, just make sure that if a bob-omb sees you, you get it's coin. Keep track of which you've gotten as they will re-appear. Whomp's Fortress ---------------- Total Coins: 141 Nothing really hard about this level at all. To collect maximum coins, you must know how to defeat the Whomp's properly. Once they fall on the ground, you can jump on top of them (don't slam them yet) and for each jump another coin will appear, to a max of 5 coins. Once you collect the first 5, butt- slam it for another 5. Jolly Roger Bay --------------- Total Coins: 104 Has the least amount of coins from all the 15 courses. Just follow the locations of them and you'll be fine. The most important coins are the 6 blue ones, because you only have one chance to get them, and if you miss one, you can't even clear 100. Cool, Cool Mountain ------------------- Total Coins: 154 With 77 of the 154 coins (exactly half) on the slide, you must master your sliding skills to get the all in this level. Remember you don't need to get them all in your first try, because you can always take a second run. The only coin you have to get your first try is the blue coin at the beginning. You might find it easier to slide without the penguin racing you, too. I recommend doing the slide first to get it out of the way. It's also wise to get harder coins out of the way first. For example, there are two spindrifts that you must kill on a very narrow ridge (by "Wall Kicks Will Work"), and the coins sometimes fall off the edge. Get these coins at the beginning, so if they do fall off, you can just restart. You should kill the spindrifts with a punch or butt-slam, so you can quickly grab their coins afterwards. Big Boo's Haunt --------------- Total Coins: 151 This level has the most blue coins of them all - 21 in total! You have to track down 11 Boo Buddies, and don't forget you can find some in the Merry-Go- Round. The only real problem you might run into here are the bookends, because if they hit you before you hit them, they'll disappear and you wont get the coins. You don't need to pay any attention to the flying chairs - too bad they don't give you anything. You also can't kill the Mad Piano, but it hides a red coin. Hazy Maze Cave -------------- Total Coins: 139 You'll do a lot of searching in this level for all the coins - and the enemies. The major problems here are the swoops (bats), because sometimes it's hard to reach their attention, or they fly around inconvenient places. Make sure that the coins fall where you can get them too (e.g. not into the black hole). If you're having trouble running around the Mr. I.s, there is a cheap trick you can use. Wait until it sees you, then run into it so you start flashing. Then quickly run into it and around it in a circle, effectively killing it. The one place in the level you don't have to worry about is the Metal Cap Course, so stay away from it - you lose all your coins if you enter it, and you can't go back directly. Lethal Lava Land ---------------- Total Coins: 133 There are only 26 coins inside the volcano, but you must collect all 107 outside before entering it, since there is no going back. Outside the volcano is fairly easy - you will probably want to select either star 5 or 6 so the koopa shell will appear, it helps in pushing all the Bullies and collecting their coins, as they sometimes only appear for a second or two. Remember also there is 5 coins which appear in Bowser's mouth once the puzzle completes itself (you also have to be standing on the puzzle for them to appear). When you pick up the crazy box, make sure it's in the right direction so you can collect the 5 coins when you land (you can use the place where you battle the second big bully - you can bounce over the lava). You'll have a lot of fun inside the volcano, as the final coin in it is called the "hardest in the game" by some. Basically, there are two Bullies inside the volcano that give you two yellow coins. One is fairly low, and the other is at the very top. Getting the coin from the lower one is not much of a problem, but for the higher one, the only way to do it is to push it off the edge, then jump in after it. Timing is everything here, and many people have developed different methods to collect the last coin, but ultimately they are the same. You can find a movie of me collecting this difficult coin at my homepage, to give you an idea of how it is done. This would be one of those coins you get at the very beginning, but since you can't get out of the volcano, it's not possible in this case. So you have to get all 107 coins outside the volcano, then enter. I wish you lots of good luck getting this one! Shifting Sand Land ------------------ Total Coins: 136 Again, you'll need to collect all 74 coins before venturing into the pyramid. Most of which are easy to collect. I recommend using the Wing Cap to get them, although it's a nice challenge to try and do it without (I originally thought that you needed the Wing Cap, but Alex Penev informed me otherwise). Probably the coins that give everybody the most trouble are the ones from the Fly Guys. With practice, you'll learn to kill them over the right places so you can collect the coins. A cheap (but highly effective) method would be to just use the koopa shell. (Again, for a challenge you could try it without.) Inside the pyramid, all the coins are very obvious. You might not want to dive at the goombas, though. I've had their coins go through the ceiling and on to the next floor. Dire, Dire Docks ---------------- Total Coins: 106 Not a single coin comes from an enemy in this course, so every coin is in plain sight. Make sure you don't fall off the small platform when collecting the blue coins, though. You also should be very careful that you don't get sucked into the big hole underwater. Also, because you need the poles to get some of the red coins, you must first beat the second Bowser before you can get all 106. (Recently, I heard that all 106 are possible to get with the sub still there. However, unless you are looking for a challenge, I still suggest to beat the second Bowser first.) Snowman's Land -------------- Total Coins: 127 I originally thought (along with everyone else) that the total to this level was 126. I believe it was in early 2002 when Josiah found the "secret coin" (along with another "impossible coin" in Tiny-Huge Island) hidden inside the wall. This coin is found inside the giant snowman, inside the wooden plank before the first tree on the snowman. Although you can get this coin by jumping off the plank and kicking backwards, there is an even easier way to get this coin. Using the cannon makes the collection of this coin especially easy, since by just duplicating the correct angle guarantees that you will get it. I cannot perfectly describe the angle here, but you will find a picture of the correct angle at my homepage. (http://www.geocities.com/sm64home) All the other coins are fairly easy to get. You will find a spindrift or two inside the very cold pond, and I recommend not using them to boost you up to the next platform, so you can collect their coins easily. To get up there, you can wall kick from a place in the pond that has slightly dried up, or you can use the cannon. Also remember that to kill Mr. Blizzard, you must run around him until he falls over. Inside the igloo, everything is easy to collect. Don't kill the goomba when it's under the star, or else his coin will get stuck in the ice. Also note that you need the Vanish Cap here, to collect the 20 coins frozen in the ice. Wet-Dry World ------------- Total Coins: 152 There's nothing that should give you much trouble here, and the only enemies that you need to worry about are the four skeeters and the Chuckya. Two of the skeeters are found inside the town, along with the 8 red coins and 18 yellow ones. When you kill the two skeeters in the town, make sure you can get their coins easily. (Killing them while they're on top of the wall isn't a good idea as the coins will probably fall on each side of the wall.) The town have a total of 45 coins, and outside of the town you'll find a total of 107. A lot of coins are found in ! blocks in this level, so make sure you get each one on the list and collect all of their coins. You won’t be able to open them underwater, so adjust the water level as necessary so you can get to them. Tall, Tall Mountain ------------------- Total Coins: 137 62 of all the coins will be found on the slide (that's 47 yellow and 3 blue) so make sure that you can do the slide easily. Remember that you don't have to get every coin on the slide in one run-through, you can use as many as you want, as long as you don't die. Make sure you get the three blue coins one your first slide, though. Also, don't forget about the single coin at the very beginning, hidden behind the wall at the start of the slide. Once you're done the slide, you can easily jump over the fence and land on the cliff behind the very beginning. You may want to get the slide's coins at the beginning, if you're worried you might fall off, or find some coins on the slide tricky. Collecting the coins outside the slide requires you to make sure you are confident jumping on the mushrooms and other various elements. You are also required to track down quite a few enemies, although most are in plain view, and in groups. (For example you'll find 2 groups of bob-ombs, one with two bob-ombs and the other with three.) A problem you might run into (I know I did) is that sometimes the bob-ombs walk off the edge. Picture what happened to me... I had 136 coins, as was just coming up to kill the final bob-omb. As I was walking towards in, it just casually walked of the edge of the level to its doom... taking its coin with it. Luckily for me, there is a way to bring him back without having to restart. All I had to do was go back into the now- empty slide, complete it, and the bob-omb was back with his coin. Tiny-Huge Island ---------------- Total Coins: 192 Maximum Coin Score: 191 This level has the most coins out of any area in the game, but it also has three main areas to it. (34 coins are found in Tiny Island, 112 coins are found in Huge Island, and an additional 46 coins are found in Wiggler's cave, a part of Huge Island.) It's up to you what section you want to do first, although I usually save the 10 yellow coins you get from Wiggler's room until the end. You go into the Wiggler battle with 181 coins, and then you can just collect the final coins and then Wiggler's star. If you don't want to do it like that, you can get the coins by hanging underneath them on the wire grid, but it'll take you longer. I recommend you start with the area that gives you the most trouble. You can quickly finish off 33 of 34 coins from Tiny Island, but you can't get the 34th, as it is the infamous "impossible" coin. The impossible coin is located in the ground, to the left of the hole where the small metal balls roll out of. For several pictures of the impossible coin, you may visit may homepage. (http://www.geocities.com/sm64home) Otherwise, Tiny Island should be easy. Perhaps the most trouble you will find are the micro-goombas. Remember, there are 10 of them and you must get all 10 of their coins for a perfect score. Practice jumping on them precisely, because if you miss, they could hit you and disappear. You will not get hurt, but now you can't get their coin. Also, they sometimes walk off the edges and kill themselves. However, you can easily bring them back if they walk off the edge (unless it falls into water and dies). All you have to do is jump into the pipe to take you to Huge Island, then warp back. Any micro-goombas that weren't killed, but jumped off the edge, will be back. Giant Island is pretty big and has lots of coins and enemies. With 112 possible coins available without even going into Wiggler's cave, you could actually collect your 100-coin star without ever having to leave this island. However, there's one very, very important trick that you need to know. You must kill all the giant goombas with a butt-stomp. If you simply jump on them, you'll only get a single coin. But with a butt-stomp, you'll get a blue coin, and with 11 giant goombas, you would be cheating yourself out of 44 coins if you didn't butt-stomp them. I recommend doing a side-flip over them, then smashing them. If you just jump normally and butt-stomp, they will sometimes do a little jump when they see you, and could will accidentally bump into you before you smash them. Other enemies that are found in Giant Island include a chuckya, a lakitu, a koopa troopa, 5 giant piranhas, and 3 fly guys. Track them down and kill them, making sure that their coins will land in an acceptable place, if they're close to the edge. You might have trouble with the fly guy by the cliff where the metal balls are rolling on, since you have only a little room where the coins can land. (You might want to get him near the beginning.) Other then that, the coins are straight-forward, also remember not to smash down either post before you run around them! You can get to the post on the island by jumping from above, or using the cannon. Tick Tock Clock --------------- Total Coins: 128 This is one of my favourite levels, and it really shouldn't cause you a lot of trouble. You can choose any speed you want to complete this level, and I recommend the "stopped" time (you enter the level with the big hand on the 12). You will need to be fairly good at wall-kicks to get to the top of the clock with time stopped, though, as some platforms that normally carry you up are now stopped. If you decide not to use stopped time, good luck, because you'll have a hard time collecting the red coins with the time even on slow. (Again, it is possible, I've done it on fast too.) Otherwise, with only 2 enemies (the bob-ombs at the beginning) to worry about, this level has a lot of it's coins inside ! blocks (13 blocks in total), and 68 coins from them! It's not a hard trick, but to collect most of the coins before they hit the ground and scatter, jump once to hit the block, then again just as they are popping out of the block. Rainbow Ride ------------ Total Coins: 146 Yes, Rainbow Ride is my favourite of all the courses. And actually, although it may be a little slow riding the carpets several times, it's pretty easy to get all the coins (just don't fall!) The ones that will cause you the most trouble will be the blue coins, where you must wall-kick up the whole maze, and nab the 5 blue coins at the top, before they disappear. With practice, doing this will become easy, but I still recommend that you get these coins very first. I really can't say much more to help you, just use the first blue coin as a guide of where to start your wall-kicks, and try to keep them in the centre. It doesn't matter which way you go first: to the big house or the ship. From the big house, you can warp (or even jump) to the maze, (actually you can even make it to the ship from the top of the big house, but it's tricky and I don't recommend it.) From the ship you can jump and land on a lower platform. The other coins I think you should get first are the ones from the Shy Guy, and possibly the first Lakitu, as they often fall off the edges. Tower of the Wing Cap --------------------- Total Coins: 63 Maximum Coin Score: 53 My best coin score for this level is 53, and I think this is the perfect score. You can use as many Wing Caps as you want, but you must get all the coins in one run through. Getting 53 coins is probably the best test of flying skills in the entire game. My method of doing this is to get every coin in the coin trail, and fly through the first two rings getting both red coins, and three (yes, three) of the yellow coins. This takes very precise flying skills, and maybe a little luck too. For the third ring, get as many coins as you can when you first fly through it, then get the next 1 or 2 coins in the coin trail, then turn around and get the rest of the coins from the third ring... You can get another two passes through the ring. Finally, quickly fly above the tower, because your Wing Cap is about to run out. You should have 39 or 40 coins now. The remaining 13 coins can be obtained from the Wing Cap on the tower. If you're really good at flying, you might be able to get the second last coin from the coin trail, so you could get a maximum of 14 coins just from the tower. Good luck! To my knowledge I'm the only one who has ever gotten 53 coins here. (Then again I may be the only one who wasted my time trying to do it.) Vanish Cap Under the Moat ------------------------- Total Coins: 27 Nothing difficult here. With only 11 yellow coins and 8 red coins to collect, you should be able to collect them all here no problem. If you accidentally miss a red coin on the slide, you can get back up the slide by jumping with your back to the slide, and kicking. Continually do this to slowly work your way back up. Just don't fall off this level and you'll do fine. Cavern of the Metal Cap ----------------------- Total Coins: 47 Slightly more difficult than the vanish cap course, but still easy. Just watch out for the strong water current. To make it easy to get the yellow coins under the water, use the metal cap and walk on the bottom. Other than killing the Snufits and collecting the red coins, you're done this course. The Princess's Secret Slide --------------------------- Total Coins: 80 Fairly easy to do, just make sure you hit the blue coin block which is to your right at the start. Six blue coins appear, all at the beginning of the slide. If you do miss a coin or two, you can backtrack by jumping and kicking back, and each time you do this, you'll move back a bit. A great challenge, though, is to see how fast you can complete the slide, while getting all 80 coins, and without backtracking. My fastest time is 0'20"5, which is a tied world-record with several great SM64 players. The Secret Aquarium ------------------- Total Coins: 56 Wow, you can't really make it easier than this. Unless you are a lousy swimmer, there's no way you could mess up this one. Get the 8 red coins and the 5 coin rings, and you're done. Wing Mario over the Rainbow --------------------------- Total Coins: 56 Lots of people complain about getting the red coins in this course... I really don't see what's so hard about it. :) Getting all 56 coins isn't very challenging, but make sure you know how to get around using the Wing Cap. Then just keep flying through the coin rings (there's four of them around rainbows, and one on a cloud). Get a few coins, then go back to a cannon and shoot yourself out again. As long as you don't make any dumb mistakes (like crashing into the side of the cloud) you should be fine. Bowser in the Dark World ------------------------ Total Coins: 80 Fairly easy here... hopefully a goomba doesn't walk off the edge on you. Other than that, all the coins are straight forward. Just don't fall off the edge... Take your time if you have to. Bowser in the Fire Sea ---------------------- Total Coins: 80 A bit harder than the last Bowser stage, but not impossible. You might try pushing the one bully that's high up down to a lower platform (like the wire net), so it would be a little easier to collect his coin. Be patient, and you can get all the coins here easily. Bowser in the Sky ----------------- Total Coins: 76 This one is definitely the hardest of the three Bowser stages... it's kind of tricky. Not especially hard, but in a few places you have to watch that the coins don't fall off the edge. For example, it's often hard to get all of the coins that the whomp gives you. The first 5 are easy, but then the last 5 usually fall down to the platform below, and if they've spread out far enough, it'll likely be impossible to get them all before they fall off. Another tricky point are those two bob-ombs. Sometimes their coins will fall off the edge too, just kill one at a time and hope for the best. It's probably a score that not many people have bothered to get, so congratulate yourself if you get all 76 coins here! Outside the Castle ------------------ Total Coins: 2 There are two coins hidden underneath the moat outside the castle, and they are the only coins in this area. To get them, either fly under the moat with the Wing Cap, or drain the moat and then wall kick off the moat walls to reach them. When you collect them both, a 1UP appears. Inside the Castle ----------------- Total Coins: 4 Okay, you shouldn't need any help getting these ones! They're found in the first room of the castle, two on either side of the stairs. They're the only coins in the castle itself. They were just placed there so you could gain some health before trying your next star. These are probably the most-gotten coins of the game, and they can be recollected each time you enter and exit a course. Castle Courtyard ---------------- Total Coins: 9 You need 12 stars before the 10 boo buddies appear (but only 9 contain coins, the other contains the entrance to Big Boo's Haunt.) Just kill the boos while they are solid (you can't be looking at them) and collect their coins. Note that the boo buddies that appear in Big Boo's Haunt contain blue coins. ******************************************************************************* * 4.0 * * 1UP MUSHROOMS * ******************************************************************************* Here they are: all 121 1UP mushroom locations in Super Mario 64! I have spent a lot of time tracking down every one, and this is, to my knowledge, the complete list. If you know of one I do not have listed here, I would really appreciate it if you e-mail me the one I am missing. I would, of course, give you full credit. It took a while to put together, so I hope that at least one person found it helpful. If you spot an error in the guide, or just want to comment on something I wrote, feel free to e-mail me. Really. Now comes the credits section. I would like to thank the following people: -Josiah for finding both the secret coin in Snowman's Land and the impossible coin in Tiny-Huge Island. Without this knowledge, we might still think the maximum coin total for the 15 courses is 2090! -The world's #1 SM64 player*, Alex Penev. He is still an active SM64 player who has helped me in a lot of SM64 challenges, and is even still developing new strategies to accomplish what had once seemed impossible. *source: http://www.geocities.com/n64highscores/ -Everybody else in the SM64 community! There are some really great people out there who still play this game even years after its release. The game will never get boring with the members of this community. -Nintendo for developing the game, of course. And special thanks to Shigeru Miyamoto for being the genius he is! ******************************************************************************* (C) Copyright 2003 Curtis Bright All information contained in this document is my own, and may not be duplicated (except for personal use) without prior permission.
