"The start of the Clone Generation!"
The first 3 Dimensional platforming game, which is very un-noticed, as well as a pile of rubbish, called Jumping Flash for the Sony Playstation failed as an idol for a 3D Platforming genre. Around a year later after it's failur, Nintendo released a ''Horrible'' (It was great really) games machine, the Nintendo 64, and it's only launch game, Super Mario 64. Super Mario 64 took the credit for been the ''worlds first 3 Dimensional platformer'', thanks to magazines and took the world by storm.
When I said ''Clones'' in the tag line, What I meant is that when Super Mario 64 was made, game developers such as the people behind Croc and Gex, tried their own hand and failed. The only games which have come close is Donkey Kong 64, Banjo Kazooie and Conkers bad fur day.
Stepping in to a full 3D world, full of places to explore, as well as places to fall to your death and lead you in to a dead end full of camera faults and glitch's. The graphics, from a 8 bit form, Super Mario Brothers which is one of the fun games to play, to a 64 bit evolation. The graphics which changed from over 10 years are absolutley mind blowing, Gone is the 2D wall which Mario and friends scrolled accross to a flag in the middle of nowhere, Super Mario 64 makes the 2d scroller look appauling.
The main purpose of past Super Mario games was to mainly get to the goal in the rather stretched time limit, but jumping on enemies to kill them. Super Mario 64 has had a make over on the main Super Mario tradition, instead of reaching the goal in a vast, not sparse and graphical wondering worlds, you need to collect stars, which act as goals.
Super Mario 64 has a whopping ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY stars in the game, that is right, 120. Stars, hidden in the worlds and the area where you choose your levels (which I shall explain a few paragraphs down). You need to get several tasks completed to get some stars, one might be killing the boss man threatening the world, or racing somebody to the top of a mountain. There ways of getting stars are brilliant one's, though some maybe obscure, like dropping in a caged floating platform whilst holding on to a leg of an owl, or even chasing after an eel underwater and grabbing a star which is clipped to it's tail. This game is mad I tell you, mad!
Unlike the wide selection of Mario game's which has no story, unless mentioned somewhere in the instruction manual, Super Mario 64 has it's own story inside of the game. What it is, Princess Peach invites Mario to her castle because she has made a cake, and some how has got herself captured by Bowser and sealed inside a stained glass window. Once again, it's up to Mario to save her.
Upon entering Princess Peach's castle, you will be greeted with a lot of doors. Behind most of these doors lead to other doors, which lead to others, you get the picture until eventually you find an object (Usually a painting) which you can jump in, which takes you to the one of the fifteen different worlds.
That is right, fifteen worlds, A Huge ammount for a launch game, in fact any game, as the avarage platform game has around eight worlds. You have complete control of the world, you can go basically anywhere you want, do anything at once, and even better, you can play your favourite worlds as many times as you like.
Though, There are many strings attached to the world, you have complete your task, whilst avoiding obsticals and enemie's like Goomba's, Koopa's and the dreadful Boo's. The enemies are easily taken care of, and add a lot of fun to the game.
Super Mario 64 not only have massive worlds and great Nintendo graphics, it also has brilliant sound and music, which fits in to the levels just right, although it is a shame that some of the infamous Mario sounds like ''gloop'' was taken out.
Super Mario 64 will always been one of my favourite games of all time, it has it's fault like camera angels or insane difficulty on some levels (Try getting a star on level one floating in the middle of the sky on level one, once you have 100 coins and the 100th one was in the air... talk about difficult).
Some of the regular Mario element's are missing, the most obvious is the Flag which has been given the chop. Other missing elements are hills with eyes and the hammer which lures Bowser to his death, you will need to fight Bowser in a massive areana in the game, telling you how to beat him now will easily spoil your fun.

Alternative : Where shall I start? Charmalone Twist 1 + 2, Yoshi's Story, Donkey Kong 64, Conkers Bad Fur Day, Rayman 2, Gex 2 + 3 and Banjo Kazooie.
