Super Smash Bros.
Review by KyleKilltacular
"9 years later, and still rocking my N64."
If you know anything about video games, you've probably heard of the phenomenon that is Super Smash Bros. Before Brawl hit the Wii with a bang, before Melee smashed into the Gamecube and destroyed all other games on it, there was the original Super Smash Bros.
I've had this game since the first year it went on the shelves, and I still visit it at least 3 times a month, weather I'm hanging out with friends, or just looking for some classic fun. With that said, let's get started with the review.
Impact: 9 (The first ten minutes playing the game)
It doesn't really matter if you start out going through the classic mode, or jump right into smashing the CPU or your friends, you'll get a kick out of it right off the bat.
Gameplay: 10
I don't want to call it "innovative", but the Gameplay is great. Basically what you do is fight with other players all on the same screen. When you hit others, their % goes up, and the higher the %, the more they fly when you hit them. The point is to either make them fly off the sides of the screen, get blown to the stars off the top of the screen, or get smashed under. It never gets old.
Controls: 9
A lot of people would say that this deserves a 10, but the controls are just not as smooth as they could be. I love them, don't get me wrong, it's just that a slight delay prevents me from giving it that extra point. Aside from that, they're great and simple. A to punch, B to special, Z to shield, R or L to grab, etc etc etc. It takes about 2 minutes to get them down.
Character Selection: 8
I love the characters that they do give you, but the number of characters actually are makes me give this section an 8. If I can remember, seeing that I haven't played for well over a week, there's Mario, Samus Aran, Kirby (YES), Pikachu, Link, Donkey Kong, Yoshi, and Fox, with 4 other secret characters.
Storymode: 7
I really shouldn't even have made a storymode section, seeing there's no real storymode, so I'll just review the classic mode. You choose a character, a difficulty, and a number a lives you have from 1-5. Once you've chosen, you'll fight through a series of characters, with some variations of the characters, including giant, metal, and team. There are some bonus levels, which include destroying targets, landing on platforms, and racing to a door. Once all the levels are done, you'll fight the boss of the game, Master Hand.
Multiplayer: 13.5
Yeah. A 13.5. I went there. Why? Because that's what it deserves. Super Smash Bros has been called one of the classic party games. You and your friends, if you have any, will have a blast smashing, punching, kicking, and catching each other on fire on various levels seen through the world of Nintendo. It never gets old.
Smoothness: 8
Just a small delay and minor screw ups on collision data, that's all.
Pros:
Amazing multiplayer fun.
Satisfactory singleplayer fun.
Never gets old.
Cons:
Small problems in smoothness.
Rent or Buy?
Well it's amazing if you can actually find a place that will let you rent this, but nevertheless, it's a buyer. Have fun smashing!
