Super Smash Bros.
Review by DarkMark42
"Nintendo sure has gotten more creative over the years..."
Super Smash Bros was released for the Nintendo 64 back in late April of 1999. It is a fighting game that includes several characters from different Nintendo franchises, and the first of which that started a trilogy that has so far spawned two sequels, and currently has two more under development. The game's improve with each passing sequel, however this one stared it off and is a great game.
Story-
None really. It's just a bunch of Nintendo characters beating the crap out of eachother. There's not even an ending, you just progress through the game unlocking stuff and having fun. The characters include Captain Falcon, Donkey Kong, Fox, Jigglypuff, Kirby, Link, Luigi, Mario, Ness, Pikachu, Samus, and of course, Yoshi.
Graphics- 7/10
Not very good. I know the Nintendo 64 utilizied cartidges rather than discs and therefore was limited, this game was made 3 years after its release and after seeing how beautiful The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time looked, they could've done a lot better job with the graphics. The polygons look downright terrible. Seriously, the characters look very blocky and it showed Nintendo's lack of effort with the graphics. Other than that, the colors and backgrounds look okay.
Music- 8/10
Again, the Nintendo 64 was limited, but the music isn't too bad. It has your basic sounds effects of a fighting game. A lot of classic tunes are played in the stages and therefore gives a feel of nostalgia. You'll probably find youself humming several tunes, most of which are decent quality. All in all, no real complaints bout the music.
Gameplay- 9/10
This is where Super Smash Bros shines. You pick a character, then you play a series of stages in which you have to weaken your opponent to a point that you are able to knock him off the stage. At first, this technique might sound weird, but you slowly get used to it and it becomes very fun. Different stages have different gimicks, like fighting a giant size of your opponent with cpu allies, or fighting a bunch of mini opponents. The game is addicting and has tons of replay value and more importantly, it paved the way for its even better sequels.
Overall
Super Smash Bros. is a video game that absolutely should be in your Nintendo 64 library. If not, what are you waiting for? Go out and buy it!
Final Score- 8.5
