"The first tennis game to N64!!"
Mario has done it all. He golfed in beautiful places. He's saved Princess Peach a million times from Bowzer. He's even raced along friends and enemies! But now there's something new, something different. He's playing tennis! You can play against many characters and in many different modes! Finally, a good, original, game for Mario!
Story Line: N/A
There's not much of a story line in this game. You just pick a character you want to play as, then pick a mode, and then beat your opponent in the face with the tennis ball. Not much of a story line here.
Game Play: 9/10
The game play in this game is really good. There are many characters to play as. They are separated into groups, speed, power, etc. Then you get to pick what mode you want to play in. There are 4 modes: Tournament, Ring Challenge, Flower, and Bowzer stage. These are all very fun, challenging things to do.
Tournament. This is the main thing you want to do. You pick a certain cup, and play against an opponent. If you keep winning, then you win that cup. Just get two more and your character is a champion! If you can manage to do this will every single character, then you will definitely be a Master Mario Tennis Player.
Ring Challenge is another fun and exciting mode. You can do Rally or a head to head challenge. In rally, you and your opponent want to get as many rings as you can get WITHOUT messing up. This is a real challenge, especially if you're good and the opponent is bad. I personally love the head to head challenge more though, because I'm pretty good at this game, and this makes it seem a lot like a tournament match, but with the rings. Well either way, they are both really great.
Then there's the odd flower challenge. Here, flowers will shoot tennis balls at you and you want to hit them back. The catch is though, there's someone playing against you. Another catch is, you only get one chance to hit each tennis ball. If you miss one, too bad. This is probably the hardest mode in the entire game.
If you played Mario Kart, then you know about items. If you never played that awesome game, then you should first play it, then play this game. Well anyway, this game has items from Mari Kart in the Bowzer Stage. You play against an opponent just like you normally would, but you get to use items!! This makes everything really exciting!! The stage also swings, making things harder. This is probably the best thing you can do in this game.
Oh wow how could I have forgotten? There's the obvious regular matches! You can play singles or doubles, but either way this is the best way to practice.
If you don't feel like playing a computer opponent, you can play against a sibling, parent, relative, dog, cat, anyone! You can do every mode except for tournament with, or against, your friend. And if you have more controllers, then you can play against more friends! You can play with up to 4 people!! More friends = more fun!!
There is one flaw though. With some characters, it is extremely difficult to win the tournaments, so you might get sick of it and quit. That's what happened to me after a bit. So unless you are pretty patient, this game might not be for you.
The graphics is just like any other Nintendo 64 games. Clean, bright, sharp. Detailed too. Like when you hit the ball hard, then there's a purple light around the ball. When you hit it low, there's a blue. Orange if you hit it high. When the ball is served, the game even keeps the speed! Cool, huh?
The sound and music in this game is great. There's not much I can say about it though. When you hit the ball, you can hear it bounce off your racket. When the ball bounces, you can hear it bounce on the hard tennis floor. When a bomb explodes, you can hear it from a mile away. And the characters can talk too! They get sad and angry when they lose a rally, which is pretty cool.
Life Span/Replay: 9/10
This game will last quite a while. There are a lot of characters and a lot of things to do. Even if you play for about 5 hours a day, you will still need a lot of time to beat this game, because it gets harder, and there are just a lot of things to do.
There's no limit on how many times you can do something with one character, so you can go through this game as many times as you want. You might get sick of this game before you finish it once though, so if you aren't patient, then watch out.
Rent, Buy, or Avoid Completely: Rent or Buy
It is your decision to make when it comes to renting or buying. Decide based on your characteristics. Are you determined and patient? Then buy this game. If you get sick of everything in a week or so, then rent it. I would suggest you buy it if you have a sibling or relative that likes to play with you.
This game is pretty good for the patient, determined people, but may be horrible for the impatient people.
