"Excellent, 2 player competition!"
Windjammers is a great game that was released a few years ago. The game is kind of like tennis with a Frisbee. Two people face off against each other on a court divided by a net. Behind each player is a goal. Depending on the court you choose to play on, the goals are divided into different sections. Most of the goal is worth 3 points, but some sections are worth 5. The game begins by the referee throwing the Frisbee to one of the players. The player has a few seconds to try to throw the Frisbee by his opponent to score. It sounds simple, but it can be quite strategic. For instance, the court is walled, so you will never throw the Frisbee out of bounds during play. Instead, you can ricochet the Frisbee off the walls to confuse your opponent. There are two types of throws. The first is a regular throw, which can be bounced off walls. It is also possible to throw the Frisbee so it curves. The second is the loft, which is thrown into the air. If the Frisbee lands before your opponent can catch it, you score 2 points. The danger of throwing it up in the air, however, is that your opponent can perform a super throw if they get underneath it in enough time. Super throws can be very difficult to stop, as the have a tendency to perform gravity defying turns in mid-air. Even if you get in front of a super throw, often times the momentum will carry you back into your goal.
Defense takes some strategy as well. You have 2 basic moves to prevent your opponent from scoring. The first is a dash. You will need to use this move a lot. The second is the block. By blocking a shot, you will knock the Frisbee into the air. Blocking a shot is more difficult to get into position for, but it will usually set you up for a super throw.
The characters are big and colorful along with the courts and crowd. The visuals won’t cause a riot, but considering the game was released years ago, they more than get the job done.
The sounds don’t really add or detract from the game.
The controls are simple enough to pick up and they are very responsive. You will have no problem serving up a ricochet shot or making a diving save!
This game is a blast to play with 2 people! There is quite a bit of strategy involved, should I play it safe and guard my goal, or play the net? There are a bunch of players to choose from, ranging from weak, fast guys to strong, slow guys. It is a really simple concept, but it is a lot of fun!
Chances are you aren’t going to find this game in the arcades and unless you own a Neo Geo and are willing to shell out 150+ dollars, you won’t get to play this game unless it’s on an emulator.
