Notes before reading this document:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
a) This document is a list of the statistics of the ballplayers within Major
League Baseball and the associated player names implied by the statistics.
The player names are based on the rosters of the MLB from the 1987 season.
Due to inconsistencies with the 1987 rosters and the game's rosters, real-
life players are often found to be playing different positions in the game.

b) This document is protected by US Copyright Law, and the Berne Copyright
Convention of 1976. This document is for private and personal use only--it

d) This document is best read on a plain text reader. Use a standard find
feature to navigate the sections and to find exactly what you're looking for.

e) This guide appears in plain text at GameFAQs and other websites may link
to its location on GameFAQs.

f) This FAQ began on May 30th, 2009 when I renewed interest in playing Major
League Baseball by LJN on the Nintendo Entertainment System. Wanting to
create the ultimate team and lineup, I remembered that the game did not have
the authorization from the MLB Players' Association to use the official
player names from the MLB rosters. With the internet, those names and
numbers are readily available, so I spent the Summer of 2009 looking up the
player names and matching them approximately with their in-game
statistics. I spent the Spring of 2010 documenting the game strategies
and design based on the rosters.

g) The game has many design flaws which when taken advantage of, can result in
you stealing bases effortlessly, hitting home runs, and always getting the
AI baserunners out. The strategies listed are a result of over twenty-two
years of gameplay. Read these sections thoroughly and there is no reason
for someone to lose against the computer.

1) Version Changes:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1.00 - June 4, 2010:
Completed construction of guide on June 4, 2010.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2) Introduction
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(Taken from page 3 of the instruction manual)
Sure you've always wanted to be a professional ball player but have you ever
thought about managing? Well, here's your chance to prove yourself both on
and off the field.
--You choose your starting line-ups based on individual stats and playing
statistics. Each of the 26 major league teams is represented with its own
full roster.
--You make managerial decisions like using a pinch hitter, bringing in a
relief pitcher, choosing a D.H. to face a lefty or having a switch hitter
swing from the other side.
--You pitch, catch, hit, bunt, pitch out, steal bases, make spectacular
fielding plays and even throwing errors.
...and because this is the ONLY officially licensed Major League Baseball
video game cartridge, you can actually play American and National League
regular season games, All-Star games and the World Series using all your
favorite teams, complete with home and away uniforms.
This is REAL baseball...for REAL baseball fans.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3) History of the Game
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"America's favorite pastime brought to life with all the excitement of a
real game!"

That is the slogan on the front of the U.S. box of Major League Baseball
for the Nintendo Entertainment System. Released in the U.S. in April 1988,
it competed in the video game market with other baseball games including
Tengen's RBI Baseball for NES and Atari's Super Baseball, all released in
1988. Nintendo had released its first baseball game, simply titled
Baseball, on October 18, 1985 as a launch title for the NES in the U.S.
From 1985 to 1991, the Nintendo Entertainment System boasted the most
variety in baseball video games with seventeen different releases.

Major League Baseball was the third baseball game to receive an official
license from Major League Baseball. LJN and Enteractive must have been
aware of the record
1,085,700 cartridges sold from the first baseball video game with an
MLB license, Major League Baseball by Mattel Electronics for Intellivision.
As a result, LJN inserted into their game the
official logo of Major League Baseball at the title screen and on its cover
art as well as the MLB rosters for all twenty-six teams available at the
time, team names, and uniform numbers. This guide is necessary because
while LJN secured a license from MLB, it did not receive one from the
Major League Baseball Players Association. Therefore, while the uniform
numbers, positions, and statistics are found in the game, the player
names that represent those details are not. This guide bridges the gap to
show what the rosters would have been like if the game had been granted the
MLBPA license.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

4) Controls
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Batter:
UP/DOWN - Move vertically in the batter's box
A - swing the bat (letting go of A breaks your swing)

A & D-PAD - return to previous base

*Left on D-Pad signifies 3rd base, Up represents 2nd base, Right is 1st
base, and Down is home plate.
*Pressing A & DOWN during a fielding play brings all the runners back to
their bases

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

5) Features of the Game
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What makes this game feel like a real baseball game in 1987/88 standards?

The colors of each team resemble the true colors of the team's uniforms.

Left and right-handed pitchers pitch from the proper side.

Left and right-handed batters bat from the proper side.

Managerial decisions feature prominently into gameplay.

A pitcher's staying power is directly related to the speed at which he
throws and the number of specialty pitches he uses.

Umpires appear by all the bases to make the call on close plays (although
they appear out of nowhere and vanish the same way). The umpire's call of
SAFE, OUT, or FOUL is displayed prominently in the middle of the screen.

The umpires change appearance to represent the call on the field. One or
two hands may be raised or stretched out.

Whenever a run comes in, the revised score is displayed in the middle of
the screen.

The player controls the direction of the pitch in real time, allowing one
to curve the ball to go around the batter's bat before it reaches the
catcher's glove.

The player can control the speed of the pitch by holding up or down on the
D-Pad before throwing the pitch. Holding up throws a slow pitch, holding
nothing throws a medium speed pitch, and holding down throws a fast pitch.
Pitchers lose speed on their pitches as the game progresses.

The game keeps track of strikes, balls, the box score, current inning, and
it ends the game appropriately if the away team is losing after the top of the
9th inning.

After every pitch which the catcher catches, the speed is displayed from
the radar gun in miles/hour.

The player has control of the runners, even if the runners aren't visible
on-screen. The runners can run toward the next base or back to the last
base. Players can only run back to the last one they came from.
Runners can steal. The player presses the button combination while the
pitcher prepares the pitch.

The game includes Regular Game (NL vs. NL or AL vs. AL), All-Star Game
(NL vs. AL or AL vs. NL), or World Series Game (NL vs. AL or AL vs. NL).
In Regular Game and World Series Games, each player or computer player
gets control of one team only. In All-Star Game, each player or computer
player can choose players from all the teams in the selected league.
Press SELECT to switch between teams in an All-Star Game.

National League teams do not have a Designated Hitter while American League
teams do.

Batters can move vertically in the box throughout the entire at-bat.
Batters may extend or contract the length of the bat during the swing by
pressing Right on the D-Pad to extend or Left on the D-Pad to contract.
This helps hit the ball on the barrel of the bat, where the power lies.

Each player has managerial responsibilities, which include choosing the
starting lineup player by player, using pinch-hitters, substituting
pitchers, and directing the baserunners (like a 1st or 3rd base coach would).

Infielders can run down a baseline to instigate a run-down of a runner.
When this happens, do not throw the ball back to the base the fielder left
because the ball will bounce off the base and result in an error since the
fielder will not be playing on the bag anymore for that one play.

The crowd wears color-changing shirts in the outfield seats when a player
hits a home-run. They change from red to blue, to brown, and to pink rapidly.

In the bottom-middle of the screen during each fielding play is a map of the
diamond and the position of the runners. Each red dot is a runner and
each white dot represents the bases of the baseball diamond. Each red dot
is accurate to 22.5 ft (the distance from each base is 90 ft).

The fielder can throw the ball to a base with variable speed. To throw the
ball quickly, press the buttons to throw the ball immediately after picking
up the ball. This requires quick timing and is not foolproof.

The crowd cheers and roars on every fielding play as only an NES cheer
can (white noise). On the bright side, every game played is sold-out!

During each half inning, the scoreboard displays the total runs, hits, and
errors for each team, as well as runs scored by inning for each team.
If more than nine runs are scored in a half inning, only the ones digit
is displayed on the scoreboard. If the game goes into extra innings, the
nine most recent innings are displayed.

Extra innings are possible.

Force plays are in effect, although the AI fielding does not always
recognize them.

Each fielding play ends either when the ball is in the hands of a fielder for
a few seconds or when there are no more baserunners on the field.

A pitcher can be switched with a relief pitcher before the pitch is thrown by
pressing Start. Press B to leave without changing the pitcher.

A batter can be switched with another of the same fielding position before
the pitch is thrown by pressing Start. Press B to leave without changing
the batter.

The game checks that all player changes are valid and that there are the
proper number of fielding positions filled at all times.

Batters have many swings available to them. Press and hold the A button to
swing all the way around. Release A during a swing to do a check swing or
to take off some power on the hit. Tap A to prepare a bunt where the bat is
sticking out in front of the plate. A strike can be registered if the batter
is bunting or has swung beyond the motion of a bunt.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

6) MLB Challenge:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Play any type of game against the computer. Play so well that the computer
exhausts all of its pitchers. This is the only way to complete a game
without completing all nine innings. Get the computer to say Mercy as it
scrambles to find a pitcher only to realize that it will not let itself.
The AI will then enter an infinite loop where it enters the pitcher
selection screen but when trying to select a pitcher receives the error "DO
NOT SELECT." Game over!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

7) AI Tricks/Bugs/Strategies
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The AI/computer player plays by a set strategy. These strategies are most
effective when playing a game against the computer. Here is the rulebook
straight from the AI manager:

The fielders always throw the ball to the base where the furthest baserunner
is heading to. For example, if the batter bunts and there is a man on first,
the AI will always throw the ball to 2nd no matter what. The AI will throw
to 1st when the runner going to 2nd is out, therefore making the batter
running to 1st the new furthest baserunner.

Because of the rule above, the player can always steal 2nd uncontested when
there are men on 1st and 3rd. The AI will not interfere since the furthest
baserunner is safe on 3rd.

The AI fielders only throw the ball when there is a runner in motion. If it
gets an out and there is another runner on base, it will not react in any way.

Should a player score many runs off a given pitcher in an inning, the AI will
go to the bullpen and select a new pitcher. Each old pitcher is unavailable
for the duration of the game. If you score enough runs, the AI will change
its pitcher so many times that it will exhaust its entire bullpen. The AI
will then enter an infinite loop where it enters the pitcher selection screen
but when trying to select a pitcher receives the error "DO NOT SELECT." The
AI cannot convince itself to leave the pitcher selection screen without
selecting a new pitcher in this situation.

If a ball is hit into the place where two field walls meet, the ball may get
lodged in a spot where the fielders cannot reach. In this case, the AI
fielders will all converge on the location without touching the ball,
similar to a home-run. This results in an inside-the-park home run as the
game will not continue until the runner circles the bases.

If done correctly, a fielder can wiggle his way into the crowd through either
team's dugout (the white area). To do this, move toward the dugout and
wiggle the D-Pad in every direction. Once in the crowd, the fielder can
walk the entire length of the stadium, holding up the game. This glitch
is best achieved when the fielder has the ball and there are runners in
motion.

If the AI throws the ball to the base which a runner is heading toward, the
player can send the runner back to the last base visited at any time without
any threat of the fielders running him down for the out. Press A and the
direction on the D-Pad where the base is located to go back to a base. Left
is 3rd base, Up is 2nd base, and Right is 1st base.

Because of the AI strategy above, it is always recommended to attempt a steal
during each pitch. The computer will throw the ball to the base only if the
catcher catches the pitch and even then, the runner can run back to the
original base uncontested. This gives the batting team a jump on every hit,
resulting in more runs. To steal, press B and the direction on the D-Pad
where the base to steal is located. Be careful that once a runner reaches
a base, he cannot go back, so do not get stuck in a situation where a
runner must be sacrificed.

For both teams, the pitcher, the shortstop, and the outfielders all move in
the same direction at all times during a fielding play. This is important
because when an outfielder throws the ball to a base, a player can maneuver
the pitcher to act as the cutoff man, thereby making a more defensive play
should the runners still be running. The AI does this at times.

The AI does not always choose the closest fielder to run after the ball.

The AI never moves the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd basemen off the bags.

The AI varies the speed of its pitches thrown, so during each at-bat
there is always at least one slow or medium pitch that is very hittable.
These are the pitches to hit to reach the outfield. Adjust the bat length
appropriately. The AI does little to no attempt to curve the ball while
in motion, so most pitches would be strikes.

If the AI hits the ball and it lands close to a base, do not pick it up
quickly. Wait until the runner is halfway to the base, then quickly pick up
the ball and throw it to the base. Because the runner is halfway to the
base, he will not attempt to run back. He will run right into an out.

When the AI fielder throws the ball to a base, the direction of the ball's
flight indicates which base the AI chose to throw the ball to. Base your
runner's base running on this to get around the bases more. For example,
if the AI right fielder throws a slow ball toward third base, and your runner
already made it to third base, try running home. If no cutoff man is
present, you have more time to make all your runners move. The computer is
not aggressive.

It is possible to get an inside-the-park homerun on the computer. At the
beginning of each fielding play, the basemen are a little off the bags. If
a batter hits a bouncer near a basemen, the baseman will retrieve the ball.
If there is a runner heading for their base, the baseman will throw the ball
to the base without a fielder covering it! The ball may bounce off the field
into the stands, resulting in an uncontested inside-the-park home run! It
has been done. It is easiest to do around first base.

The power of the bat is in the barrel. When pitching to the computer, throw
pitches inside. When the AI hits them, most of the time they will go either
foul or will stay in the infield. If pitched well enough, the AI will swing
at balls.

To have the computer create a strong player lineup for you, hold down
Left, Down, Select, A, and B at the Title Screen where the MLB logo is. Then
press Start. The first menu should have new options for 1 PLAYER SET and 2
PLAYERS SET. Choose your game options as normal.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

9) How to Use the Guide
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This guide has been constructed using various sources on the internet and
baseball almanacs. The following considerations have been made to
facilitate the reading and understanding of the terms used:

If a player name is found in the incorrect field position, I marked their
authentic position in parenthesis. C is for Catcher, I is for Infielder,
O is for Outfielder, and P is for pitcher.

If no player corresponds with a game's uniform number, I placed a ? on the
line. This means that there is no logical player that would best
represent those statistics.

In searching for the player names, I consulted the 1987 official team
rosters since the game's copyright year of 1988 suggests that the 1987
rosters were the last available. Further evidence is found during the demo
game as the computer plays a game with the Minnesota Twins and the St. Louis
Cardinals, the two teams which made it to the 1987 World Series. Since
St. Louis is the home team (therefore played at Busch Stadium), the date
of the demo game would be either October 20, 21, or 22 of 1987.

I based my search solely on the uniform
number of the game rosters and real rosters. When there were two players
who shared the same number, I looked for the player whose stats most closely
resembled those of the game. For players who wore more than one number
during the year, I chose the number that was not shared with any other
player on that particular team. Because of this selection, there are
players who are not matched up with their fielding positions in the game,
as well as uniform numbers that do not correlate to any player on a
particular team. The most frequent starters for each position in 1987 are
well represented in the game's rosters.
