"The Best NES Game Ever!"
With some of the reviews I have read, I have to agree that RCR is the best game never to be totally recognized as such. I remember when it first hit the streets, I was a little skeptical at first, but when I got it home and started playing it, I could not put the controller down. And nearly 16 years later (yea, I'm an old fart at 33), I am still playing it to this day and will keep playing it til it finally quits or when I meet my maker, which ever comes first.
The games opening sequence is silly, I'd have to agree, but soon after the opening sequence, the game just explodes into this Adrenalin rush until the very end. Given the graphics and sound during the time the game was released, this game was, in my mind, the top of the line then. Ever since then, time has evolved and spawned many new systems that have dropped dead because of lack of support from developers. But not the NES. Sure it was primitive at the time it was conceived, but the popularity of the NES and ultimately, River City Ransom took off like a bat out of hell. And I'd like to go over some of the games finer points.
What can you say about 8-bit technology? Sure it was crummy back then, but not everyone had the heart to produce such quality that we see before us. Graphics for River City Ransom: 10+.
At times, I'd wish we could actually could hear what was going through the bad guys minds as I was kicking the crap out of them, but oh well. The scrolling text seemed fine. Sound effects like the pipe dropping was realistic as well as the punching and kicking. Sound for River City Ransom: 10+
Outstanding. I never had a problem when I played RCR. Except for the fact that I couldn't push the buttons fast enough until I gotten Stone hands and Dragon Feet. Player control is outstanding and even the gangs thugs were pretty good as well. Game play for River City Ransom: 10+
I have to agree that passwords are a pain in the BLEEP, especially when you kid brother flushes you password sheets down the toilet. My only question is why this game didn't have a battery back up. Passwords for River City Ransom: 7
Overall Game Play:
There is no question, this game deserves the respect that all those cats put into this game to make it as addictive as it is. And I play to get my son addicted to this game. Hopefully, this new generation will get addicted to this game as I have since its release. And who knows. If the NES gets resurrected from the sands of time and many of the games with it, we can only wonder how the old farts entertained themselves all that time during the weekends and summers. Overall Game Play: Way Past 10+
I hope that this review will be just as much fun for those reading it as it was for me writing it. Live on River City Ransom, you have a following and it will not let you down.
