Xevious
Review by Mister_Bill
"Wow this game is underated"
I came in the review section for this game because I was curiouse what people thought about it and looking at the scores they put this game to shame. I first got this game at a second-hand gamestore (The Vault) for free when I was looking for another game controller, the guy who worked there wanted to get rid of all the old NES games so he gave it to me for free. When I got home and popped the cartridge into my NES (after a quick swab with a cue-tip and some pinesol) I was amazed that such a simple game could be so... addicting. here's a review that will do this game some justice.
Story- You are in some type of fighter/bomber spaceship, and you have to shoot the little rings and bomb stuff. this is one of the weakpoints, but hey since when do NES games have a huge plot. at least it's not like some of the newer games that just make up plotline for the hell of it and doing a bad job while they are at it (R: Racing Evolution). some of the best games ever made have absolutley Little or no storyline (SMB, Contra) so this doesn't really affect the score
Graphics (Planet)- the planet you are fighting on (Xevious?) has lush forests, deserts, oceans, (a fairly big one at that) and graslands. using the NES graphics extremley well (for a game made for the Atari). my only problem with the graphics where that they where really jagged.
Graphics (Enemies)- This is another badpoint. you cannot tell what the hell the enemies are. examples- Little flying rings that occasionally shoot you, Little circles that sit on the ground and fire at you (turrets?), and little moving turrets (Tanks?). by far the best looking enemy was the Deathstarish thing thats on the picture on the game, I don't Know what it is but it sure is fun to kill.
Gameplay- The high point of this game (Highest weighted also) this is just a fun game to play shooting enemy ships, and of course my favorite thing to do, bomb four buildings at the same time. the learning curve for this game is quick, before you know it you can get to the first deathstar thing without getting hit, but they added a twist to this, the longer you are out the better the enemies. by the time you get to the airfield before the first deathstar thing you'll be fighting a whole lot of X-wingish things. and if you survive getting across the ocean, you'll be in the middle of the most sadistic part of a game known to man (or at least I think, I haven't got past the second Deathstar thing)
Multiplayer- same gameplay, just alternating. It would be cool to have a Co-op mode, but this is before that age.
Music- Repetitive annoying music, it sounds like someone wrote it when he was on Marijuana. Mute the volume and play something better, like easy listening muzak, that's how bad it is. (I hate Easy Listening Muzak)
Overall- I rate games on the gameplay, I'm not a big graphics whore, but a catchy tune would've made this game a nine, or maybe even a ten.
Buy or Rent- BUY it's a fun game to play! but if you wanted to rent it, go for it, but I dought that you'll ever find a place that rents out NES games
