"The Potion Of Averageness"

Asterix is a Platform game developed by Bit Managers. Asterix is the typical example of a solid licensed game. Nothing really wrong with it, but also nothing special about it. Its another of those boring and unimaginative platformers of that era. Especially if you have played The Smurfs from the same developing team, (which was a tad better), you know what to expect. For the rest of you, keep on reading…

Story: N/A

Save Obelix… the end! Hey, what did you expect a freakin' Greek tragedy?!?

Gameplay: 3/10
Replay Value: 2/10

Asterix is your basic Platformer, like million others out there. It doesn't reinvent the wheel but also doesn't really do anything wrong… its just that its so damn average that it will only last for an hour or so and who wants that? You control Asterix, (Duh!), and have to travel through various areas, punching enemies, collect items and try to stay alive. Killing enemies is the worst part of the game for 2 reasons #1: you can only punch enemies, which feels very awkward and is quite annoying since Asterix's reach is very short. The platforming part is way better but nothing more than an extremely typical part nonetheless. Jump from moving platform to moving platform, ride a mine cart, avoid spikes or the void and so on… yawwwn!!!

Graphics: 6.8/10
Design: 5.2/10
Sound: 6/10
Music: 6/10

The graphics, sound & music of Asterix, (like everything else in the game), is pretty similar to The Smurfs since we're talking about a title made by the same developer with the same type of “technology”. However Asterix isn't as good as The Smurfs when it comes to audiovisuals although nothing is really bad here. The game keeps it simple and nice looking when it comes to the graphics. The sprites have good size and design, the various areas are quite colorful and so on, but nothing actually stands out like you would expect from a licensed game… once again nothing bad just average though. The sound portion of the game is even simpler and forgettable especially the music, which is average at best, while The Smurfs had some quite catchy tunes.

[+]:
-Simple but good graphics

[-]:
-Extremely average platforming
-Boring and annoying way of fighting with enemies

Also Play:
Crash Bandicoot 2 (Playstation)
Sonic The Hedgehog 2 (Mega Drive)
Super Mario Bros 3 (NES)
Super MarioWorld 1 & 2 (SNES)

Overall: 4.8/10

Final world: Average, average, average, average, average and average… and then some.
