Taito Chase H.Q. is a Pole Position styled arcade racer, but with more than
just racing going on. The premise is that you are a cop who has to chase down
criminals at high speeds on the open road, and knock their cars into
submission in order to make the arrest. It is a relatively short game, with
everything you'd expect out of old-school racers, including the Low/High gear
switch. The game can get quite challenging, especially in the final stage
where the road is long and winding with plenty of sharp turns along the way!
If you are looking for a quick and (in theory) simple racing game for the
Famicom, try this one out.

================
General Gameplay
================

The gameplay aspect of this game is reminiscent of old-school arcade racers
(sort of like Pole Position). The main premise of the game is to race along
at speeds exceeding 280KPH, while trying to chase down the criminal for that
particular stage. As you accelerate along, you will come across other cars,
as well as turns in the road (follow them to avoid going off-road and
potentially hitting something, which will cause you to spin out).

It should also be noted that there is a time limit (starts at 60 seconds;
will extend by another 60 seconds when you catch up to the criminal). If that
limit expires, it will be game over. You can continue by pressing the Start
button, as long as you have continues remaining (1 total).

At the upper-right area of the screen is a Distance bar, which will
progressively empty as you approach the criminal's car. When it is empty, the
criminal car (which will be marked) is on your screen. At this point, you
have to take out the criminal by ramming into his car repeatedly. There is a
meter in the bottom-right area of the screen which will progressively fill
and change colors from red to white as you cause damage. When it is full, you
will apprehend the criminal and the level will be completed.

=======
Scoring
=======

While driving, you will definitely come across other cars on the road. For
each one you pass, you will receive an increment of 200 points; if you hit a
car, it starts from 200 again. For example:

1 car: 200 points
2 cars: 400 points
3 cars: 600 points
4 cars: 800 points
5 cars: 1000 points

When you finally catch up to the criminal's vehicle, you will have to crash
into it many times in order to apprehend the bad guy inside. Each time you
ram the criminal's car, you will receive 2000 points.

Clear Bonus: 10000 points x (level played)
Time Bonus: 5000 x (# seconds remaining)

======
Stages
======

Prior to each level actually beginning, you are on a screen showing a radio
transmission of sorts. The message is the same for each level (roughly
translated as "This is Nancy at Chase HQ. We've got an emergency here."), and
the stage begins when you hit the Run button while on this screen. Here is a
list of who the villains you chase in each level are:

Level   Villain                   Car Type/Color
-----   -------                   --------------
1 Ralph the Slasher White Sports Car
2 Carlos the Armed Robber Yellow Sport Car
3 Gang of Pushers Silver Sport Car
4       Kidnapper                 Blue 2 Seater
5 Eastern Bloc Spy Unknown (Red Sports Car)

There are only 5 stages in the game. Once you beat Stage 5, you will watch a
congratulatory scene and the game will restart from Stage 1.

===============
Switching Gears
===============

When you start a level, you will be on the Low gear (see the top of the
screen). On low speed, the maximum speed you will be able to attain is 150KPH
which won't get you anywhere fast; it will be impossible to win like this.
However, if you switch to the High gear, your maximum speed increases to
around 280KPH. The trick is in knowing when and how to switch. When starting
off, wait until you hit about 130KPH to switch to High gear. Also, when you
crash and spin out, you will be reduced to a stop, so you will want to switch
back down to Low to gain speed again quickly before switching again. Try not
to switch to High if you're going below 100KPH, since that will slow your
acceleration slightly.

============
Turbo Boosts
============

On the lower-left portion of the screen, you will see small fan/blade icons.
Those are your turbo boosts, and you start off with 3 of them. When you press
Select to use it, you will receive a decent speed boost, which is great for
gaining lost ground after a crash or chasing after a criminal. Once you use
all 3 of them, that's all you have. They will replenish if you run out of
time and choose to continue, though. It is best to save them for the criminal
chase, and especially if in the event you crash into an object along the side
of the road.

==================
Post Game Upgrades
==================

At the end of each level, prior to starting the next one, you will be able to
upgrade various aspects of your vehicle in exchange for your points. They can
be applied by switching from the "Off" setting to the "Set" one next to the
upgrade of your choice. They are as follows:

Name             Points
----             ------
Oil              10000
Turbo            500000
Super Charger    2000000
Tire             300000
Bumper           50000
