Over Horizon
Review by Achilles Last Stand
"Another lost gem."
I can´t belive how many ''lost jewels'' are there in the gaming world : games that never got recognition, or games never released all over the world. This is sad, because many players are prived from amazing gaming experience.
Well, this is an shooter. Space Shooter. That´s probably my favorite genre, I like even those first-generation games that appeared on NES and SMS... Things like Star Force, Aleste, Star Soldier, Terra Cresta... most are arcade translations, and that´s why I like them. Flying around blowing stuff, kickin´ some alien b***, etc. This shooter is no different, but is somewhat unique.
Graphics - 9/10
Oh my, look at these graphics! Very good, real well made, and uses a lot of good ol´ NES potential. Some stages look better than others, but that´s OK. I personally think the sprites are better made than the backgrounds, though. No complaints about graphics.
Sounds/Music - 9/10
Perfect sound effects. Shots, explosions... it´s all there. Music is excellent too, I personally LOVE the music from the second stage...
Gameplay - 10/10
This is what makes this game unique. This is a side-view shooter. You start with an standard Vulcan Cannon, and you can pick up three kinds of weapons : a Laser, a Homing Blaster, and Mines. They all can be upgraded. You can pick up up to two drones that helps to increase your fire-power. They are direction-changeable, making them VERY useful. In the edit menu, you may change your drone´s position, as well to change your weapon behavior. For example : it it possible to make your Mines persue your enemies like the Homing Blasters, among other little changes.
Story/Objectives - ?
I dunno what´s the story is about, so I can´t really rate it. I´ts that kind of game that seems to say to you : ''Just blow some stuff away, please?'' :)
Difficult - 10/10
Not too hard, not too easy. This game will require a lot of your time to be beaten but it´s not that frustrating type of game.
Control - 10/10
Press B to shoot forward, press A to shoot backward, press A+B to change your drone´s position on the screen. Simple, isn´t it?
Replay Value - 8/10
Once you beat it, maybe you will never want to play it again, but I´m not so sure... maybe because I haven´t beaten it yet! :)
Overall - 10/10
You should play this game. It´s a rare one to find, maybe you can emulate it. It´s even hard to find it emulated, so good luck finding this one! :)
