Peek A Boo Poker
Review by JaketheScumbag
"Peek a Boo!"
Panesian. A very little known company that produced pornographic video games for the NES. Yes, you read that right. PORNOGRAPHIC video games. The company made 3 adult themed games - the most well known being Bubble Bath Babes, and the other being Hot Slots. I imagine the only audience for these games were perverted high school and college shut-ins. Nonetheless, these games are an extremely rare find, so if you come across the actual cartridge by chance, get it. These are a real collector's item, plus they make for very good conversation. Anyway, here's the the review:
Plot - 4/10
It's strip poker. What, were you expecting some sort of romance story to go with this? Your character frees Pok-er Penny from her vow of servitude to the strip club owner by means of a card game? Nope, nothing here. You do, however, get to read such delightful dialogue such as:
"That's it! There's nothing else to take off! How do you like my two of a kind?"
"Hi! I'm Full-House Francine! Are you feeling lucky tonight? Wanna fill up my house?"
Oh, boy, THAT'S exciting...
Gameplay - 3/10
If you know how to play poker, then this game will be a breeze. But that's just it. Poker. No real twist to the actual game. Not very fun.
You place your bet against three lovely female opponents- Full-House Francine, Pok-er Penny, and Double Dealing Debbie. For every $1000 you win, you will see your opponent in an (supposedly) erotic pose until you win $5000. There are 5 poses for each girl. Each pose gets progressively more revealing, until you eventually see her in her 8-bit birthday suit.
The mechanics are a bit flawed in the game, though, seeing as in one hand I dropped a queen of diamonds, and when the cards were called, Debbie had my queen of diamonds in her hand. Looks like they don't call her Double Dealing Debbie for nothing!
Nobody would EVER play this because they were in the mood for poker, however. So, it's like eating tofu in order to get candy.
Graphics - 7/10
Ooo-la-laaa! Seriously, though, these are alright. For pixel vixens, you can at least tell that they were meant to be attractive. (it doesn't mean that they are though...) Full House Francine's portrait looks like a bloated inflatable party doll during the poker match, though.
The cards themselves work fine. There's no question as to the value, but make sure you look a bit more closely for the suit, as it can be a little confusing due to the way the suit icon is bunched up. Aside from this, there's nothing to complain about graphically. Just don't expect a world class playboy photo shoot from this game.
Sound - 8/10
The music to this game is actually pretty good, I think. The card game music is alright. The music has sort of a happy flair to it that fits the game's novelty theme. I especially enjoy the introduction screen's music. The game's sounds are few, but nothing annoying. No complaints here.
Challenge/Replay Value - 2/10
Bah. There's no reason to come back to this. (no pun intended, you sicko) The game itself is, truth to be told, not really fun, and once you've seen the poses for each girl, you've seen it all. But it is a humorous game, if nothing else. It's good for a laugh with some buddies.
Rent/Buy? - Do stores even allow rental of NES games anymore? Anyway, I'd say buy it if you see it, as games like these were made in very limited quantities, and they are among the rarest of titles. It's a real collector's item. It's great for laughs, too.
