"A criminally overlooked game! I love it!"
The Three Stooges has to be one of the funnest games for NES...ever. I don't see why this didn't get more recognition then it did, probably because it is based on an old franchise, and those never seem to work out. Oh well...their loss.
The graphics are alright, you can tell the Stooges apart, but they're nothing spectacular, especially with games like Metal Gear being out. Still, the game doesn't slow down at all, even in the hospital chase level.
It sounds like they cut some audio from the old episodes of the Three Stooges to get this game. They may be just considered poor MIDI tracks when next to today's system, but every Stooge's voice is presented in creepy accuracy...maybe the Stooges have just been genetically frozen and preserved...
The story is the only lame part of the game. I. Fleecem, the evil banker, is putting Ma's Orphanage out of business and repossessing the house unless they get the money in a month. When the Stooges walk up, they tell Ma that they'll help her get the money. Voila! Instant story!
The gameplay is a bunch of little mini-games where you get money or have some taken away. There's a boxing one, where you have to get to the radio store and play ''Pop Goes the Weasel'' so Curly will get psyched up and pound Killer Killduff. There's a cracker-eating mini-game, where you get $5 for every cracker you eat and $20 for every bowl that's finished. There's one where you have to follow a doctor rushing a patient through the ER while picking up falling supplies. There's even a classic pie throwing game where you get money from throwing pie at people! There are some pointless games, like ones that take away or give money instantly. Oh yeah, there's also one where you get to be Moe and you get to beat up on Curly and Larry. Every time you hit them and connect, your chance for getting the game you want increases.
Rent or Buy:
If you can find it, buy it, but you may have trouble. I've only seen one place that still sells it.
Overall, The Three Stooges is a great game, instead of being just one genre, it mixes a whole lot of them together, sort of like The Misadventures of Tron Bonne (I LOVE THAT GAME!) Anyways, if you find it, buy it!
