Can you play European games on an American NES?

I know that there's an adapter that allows you to play American games on a European NES, but I'm looking for the opposite. Does anyone know?? Thanks!

In my brief search on the net, I found that the most likely answer is no. However, there wasn't much up to date info on the subject. If you didn't already know, the European/Australian version of the NES are PAL systems, and the US versions are NTSC systems. It may be helpful to use these terms in your future searches.
