    01.)                    INTRODUCTION                                 G0100
    ===============================================================================
    
    Welcome to 'Castle Quest' for the NES, released by Hudson. The game was
    originally only released in Japan for the NES, with an English translation
    planned as several magazine shots show. With the decline and eventual death of
    the NES hardware, the English game instead surfaced on the Game Boy in Europe a
    few years later. The games are essentially the same but with different level
    layouts. I was originally planning to cover both games with this guide but I
    find that I should concentrate on one first (NES one) before deciding to cover
    the GB version as well.
    
    The guide uses Shift-JIS to display Japanese characters in .txt form. If you
    cannot see them automatically and just see some garbled font, set your browser
    encoding or file viewer manually. It is recommended that you view the file in
    a fixed font such as Courier New as some of the tables with Shift-JIS will
    look odd without it.

    02.)                    BASICS                                       G0200
    ===============================================================================
    
    The goal of the game is to defeat the opponent in a chess-like scenario. Each
    round gives you a new set of pieces (units), new layout and a thus a different
    challenge.
    
    
    Nightfall:
    ``````````
    A day of fighting consists for 30 turns, 15 for each player. When morning
    comes, all units will have full HP and Magic recovered. This is both good and
    bad, but can be used strategically.
    
    
    Promotions:
    ```````````
    All but the King and Queen units can be promoted to a stronger fighter.
    Promotion usually increases HP, Cards, Spells and even Movement. In order to
    gain the promotion, the unit simply needs to land on an opponent's star square.
    Each player has them, but they are distinguished by having either a single
    large star or two smaller stars in the square.
    
    Promotions are often the key to win the battle, but defending the opponent from
    reaching promotion spots is an important way to defend as well.
    
    
    Coffins:
    ````````
    When a unit has been defeated with any means besides one-on-one battles, in
    other words by magic, a coffin remains with the corpse inside. The corpse has
    a certain amount of turns until it breaks and disappears forever when it moist
    level reaches zero. Resurrect the unit as soon as possible.
    
    
    Tombstones:
    ```````````
    When more and more units are dead, more and more tombstone will appear around
    the edge of the playing field. When there are enough, entire rows will
    disappear and push any units into the center of the field if necessary. The
    promotion stars will move as well. You can also get units stuck between coffins
    for a long time if you are not careful. If there is no space to push the units,
    they will die. As the units on the edge is often the King, and the King dying
    means the game is over, thus do not let this happen to you.
    
    
    Cards:
    ``````
    Cards are used in one-on-one melee battles. They decide if you manage to hit or
    miss the opponent. No magic can be used in these battles, but one can try to
    escape. The Joker card automatically defeats the opponent and gains your health
    back, but it does not work on every opponent (such as bosses).
    
    
    Treasure Chests:
    ````````````````
    Opening a treasure chests makes one of four events occur.
    
    Bad Luck: Choose your fate.
             * Tremor, lose a few units
             * Thunder, a vertical line of damage to your units
             * Fire, all units take some damage
             * Noogy, does nothing?!
    
    Strength: Gives you three choices to pick from.
             * Fire Rain, damages enemy units between 10-70 H.P.
             * Acid Rain, damages enemy units between 5-75 H.P.
             * Z-Rain, promotes a few of your units at random
    
    Judgement: Adds a random unit to your team.
    
    
    NES vs GB Differences:
    ``````````````````````
    Color on the NES, naturally.
    
    The GB version is only available in English, the NES one is all Japanese. There
    were plans for the NES game to be released in North America thus there might be
    a prototype floating around in English.
    
    The most drastic change you will notice is the levels itself. The bosses may
    still be the same, but the army and castles are not.
    
    The events on the NES seem to be slightly different. For one, 'The Devil' has
    the chance to summon 'The Hermit', which in turn damages you more rather than
    taking his judgment. At least, that is what I think happens because on the GB,
    'The Hermit' never shows up.
    
    Although both games have edit options, the options available within are not the
    same.
    
    
    General Tips:
    `````````````
    
    * Do not attack the same unit you are attacking with if both are almost the
      same stats. The outcome is almost 50-50 and you do not want to have luck
      decide the battle.
    
    * Use Nightfall well. Most battles have at last one. If one of your units is
      low on HP you want to keep them back, and you want to try and kill off any
      enemy units that are low on HP before they recover.

    This is the second smallest level in the game and there is almost no way to
    avoid a fight from the get-go. Use your magicians to spam some magic from the
    back row while your front takes out the opponent's in your way. Seeing that the
    king is rather poor you may want to go straight for him and save a few rounds
    battling needlessly.

    This is the first boss and naturally the easiest. He does not have any magic
    powers and severely lacks defense. The HP is high for a normal unit but even two
    or three units can take him down without any backlash.

    A well-balanced level where you actually have the upper hand stats-wise. If you
    want to expand and take some promotion early then it will probably take you
    longer than just fight it out with the enemy head-on.

    spells can take down plenty of these guys and since you are out of options for
    strategies then you might as well stick to that.
